probably not, if they are cleaver enough to use normal non grade separation lrt like other nation are using.....couple that if the lrt use on board power generation..the lrt can maybe as cheap as a BRT system....

Middle Eastern flavour in Malacca

MALACCA: Arab investors have teamed with local partners to jointly develop a RM200mil Arab City on Pulau Melaka reclaimed island off the Bandar Hilir coast here.

Golden Corporate Heritage Sdn Bhd (GCH) unveiled its plans for the Arab City that would house Arabian-themed restaurants and cafes, an Arabic museum, bazaar and shop lots and a health and beauty spa for men and women on the 1.68ha site on the island here.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the project on Pulau Melaka was the first phase of its Arab City plan that would also include similar concepts at two other major locations in Malacca.

“The first phase of the Arab City would cost RM200mil and its construction works would start in mid March. It is expected to be completed by the end of 2010,” he told reporters at a press conference held after the launching ceremony recently.

He said that GCH would also be investing an additional RM200mil to develop similar themed concepts along the reclaimed seafront in Klebang and along the Malacca River near Kampung Jawa.

He noted that investment to develop the Arab City is apt in light of recent effort to tap more Middle Eastern tourists to the country.

“This investment and projects will also help boost the tourism sectors for both Malaysia, especially for Malacca,” he said, adding that the state received a total of 26,160 tourists from the Middle East last year.

Meanwhile, GCH managing director Hesham El Fathi said the Arab City is a first of its kind project that would help introduce Arabian culture and food to locals.

We will ensure that the proposed projects in Klebang and Kampung Jawa receives global attention to help draw more Arab tourists to Malaysia and Malacca,” he said..

We hope that our investment here would also attract more Arab investors and subsequently boost the local economy, he said, adding that the projects expected to generate returns within five years.”

Its amazing what the shoplots will look like once this preposed project is ready!!!Its interesting how they going to attract people to pulau melaka if the bridge is the only link there!I suspect all the river cruise boats will be diverted here! Malacca airport to draw more regional tourists


KUALA LUMPUR: The completion of the Malacca airport runway extension project in the next six months will help attract more Indonesians into the state’s healthcare tourism sector, said Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam.

“Our main target is healthcare tourists; that is why we have the federal government approval on the extension.

“The health tourism business is very encouraging and it will bring a lot of income to Malacca and our country,” he told reporters after a signing ceremony between Casa del Rio (M) Sdn Bhd and Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Bhd for a RM50mil term loan facility to build a boutique hotel and serviced apartments in Malacca.

Mohd Ali said the healthcare treatment cost in Malacca was half that of Jakarta and by just capturing 1% of Sumatra’s population of seven million people, a huge benefit would be gained. Last year, Malacca attracted about 70,000 tourists from Sumatra.

Once the runway extension project is completed, AirAsia Bhd will fly to three places in Sumatra - Pekan Baru, Bukit Tinggi and Medan - and domestically to Penang and Pulau Langkawi, the chief minister said, adding that the budget airline would later add Jakarta, Balikpapan, Kuching, Sandakan and Kota Kinabalu to its list.

Ali Rustam said the expanded airport would be named Malacca International Airport, with FlyFirefly Sdn Bhd expected to operate from there at a later stage.

Currently, only Lion Air from Indonesia operates at the airport.

Meanwhile, the RM102mil boutique hotel project by Casa del Rio is scheduled for completion by the end of next year.

Mohd Ali said with the hotel and four others under construction, the number of hotel rooms in Malacca would increase by about 1,500 rooms in three years, adding to the 10,000 rooms now.

Casa del Rio project along river to be operational by mid-2010

THE RM102 million Casa del Rio Melaka boutique hotel, mall and apartment will be operational by June 2010.

The four-storey project, involving 64 bedroom suites and 32 apartments, will sit on 1.29ha along the Malacca River. The apartments will be offered for sale.

Casa del Rio (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd group managing director Tan Sri Syed Yusof Syed Nasir said that it had invested some RM10 million to acquire the land, which is in addition to the RM102 million investment into the project.

Casa del Rio (Malaysia) owns and manages Casa del Rio hotel. Casa del Rio is Spanish for "home by the river".

Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Bhd yesterday signed a term-loan agreement of RM50 million with its owner Casa del Rio (Malaysia).

A separate agreement was also inked yesterday between Casa Del Rio and Sin Seong Hin Sdn Bhd, where the former awarded a RM60 million contract to the latter to develop the second phase for main building works.

On why there is a six months delay in the opening of the hotel, Syed Yusof said that it was a result of the piling work as well as the tender process for the job.

Syed Yusof also operates the 570-room Concorde Hotel Kuala Lumpur, the 381-room Concorde Shah Alam and the 338-room Concorde Inn KLIA.

Other hotels operated by the group are the 18-room Lakehouse in Cameron Highlands, the 34-room Casa del Mar Langkawi, and specialty restaurants Saloma Theatre Restaurant and Bistro, Hard Rock Cafe and Planet Hollywood in Kuala Lumpur.

Malacca gets nod for RM65m runway extension

THE Malacca state government has received the green light from the federal government to extend the runway at Batu Berendam Airport, which is slated for completion in six months.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam said that the extension at the airport, which will be renamed Malacca International Airport, will cost RM65 million.

The extension is to accommodate larger carriers like Boeing B737 and Airbus A320, in line with its goal of making the historical state a top tourist destination.

"The runway will be extended to 2,200m from 1,800m now. It will cost RM65 million and the state will take a loan from the federal government for this," Mohd Ali said.

This is in addition to the RM135 million grant given to renovate and refurbish the airport, which is operated by Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd.

Mohd Ali said budget carrier AirAsia has indicated that it will fly to three destinations in Sumatra, Indonesia, namely Pekan Baru, Bukit Tinggi and Medan, from Malacca, once the runway is ready.

"After that, AirAsia plans to fly to Penang and Langkawi and a year after that to Jakarta, Palembang, Balik Papan and Kuching (from Malacca)," he said after witnessing an agreement-signing ceremony between Casa del Rio (M) Sdn Bhd and Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Bhd, and Sin Seong Hin Sdn Bhd.

"Firefly will also be coming in. We now only have Riau Airlines (operating at the airport)," he said, adding that he hopes other charter flights will also operate out of Malacca International Airport.

Mohd Ali said the state recorded a total of 7.2 million tourists last year, of which 6 million were domestic tourists. In the first two months of this year, Malacca has already welcomed 600,000 visitors.

He added that some 70,000 foreign patients sought medical treatment at the state.

"This is only 0.1 per cent of the 7 million rich people who are staying in Sumatra. We need to focus more on Sumatra ... with the new Malacca International Airport, we hope more patients will come here," he said.

"Syarat-syaratnya cukup mudah kerana ia terbuka kepada semua pengunjung yang menggunakan perkhidmatan Melaka River Cruise. Dengan memiliki tiket mereka boleh mendapatkan borang untuk cabutan bertuah yang akan dilakukan di dalam bot.

''Setiap pengunjung boleh menyertai pertandingan ini seberapa banyak yang mereka inginkan tetapi perlu disertakan tiket Melaka River Cruise," katanya di sini hari ini.

Menurut beliau, sejak 4 Mac lalu pihaknya telah menerima banyak borang penyertaan bagi cabutan bulan April.

Katanya, pengunjung yang ingin menyertai cabutan itu hanya perlu melengkapkan borang yang disediakan termasuk menyertakan tiket Melaka River Cruise bagi melayakkan mereka memenangi pelbagai hadiah menarik yang ditawarkan.

it is located bhind Avillion hotel. IF I am not mistaken, it is a project by government which consist of a food court and 3 blocks of 17 storey flat/ apartment.
