Skyscraper Construction to Start Around the Queen Victoria Market

CRANES, scaffolding and trucks are about to become familiar sights around the Queen Victoria Market, when the developer who purchased a slice of the former City Mazda dealership nearby, starts construction of a major new apartment-based village.

Melbourne-based builder Mider will start building the first of two apartment towers within its Infinity 8 project in Franklin Street, next month.

A second and much taller tower called Infinity 88, rising 19 levels and including 168 units, is being marketed at the moment and is expected to also rise from the ground this year. In three weeks, 103 apartments in Infinity 88 have sold.

Late last year, a 104-unit complex which will be the first tower to be developed on Mider’s site, sold out in four weeks.

Mider managing director Anton Wilson said a boutique hotel on a third piece of his property, opposite the Queen Victoria Market car park, will be developed in about 2012.

Infinity88??

Infinity88, a one small 1 bedroom apartment unit in Melbourne, the size of a studio (28sm). Yet, seems like they package into 1 bedroom to sell. Cost around $290,000K.

Location is very good at central Melbourne (Franklin Street). Developer is Mider and is going to build a boutique hotel beside this apartment. Residents can make use of the hotel facilities (gym, pool etc) in the future.

Everything seems nice. But I checked on exising studios (not new old) (since it's about the size) around that area, selling for $150,000 - $200,000K. And I wonder if this one is so good afterall? I might as well buy those existing ones, albeit being older in years.

merged into correct thread

if location and quality are comparable, buy the older pad. minor alterations and a coat of paint will bring it up and you've still got a considerable savings over a new apartment

28sqm @ $290000 is a dog box anyway

I know this is 2010 and the world moves on but think of a time where Architecture was basic materials, proportion and a harmonious link with it's surroundings. I know Melbourne has good modern edgy architecture but sometimes I wonder if some think to make a building at odds with everything around it makes it wonderful ? .........This is so subjective....

There is plenty of action around the southern part of the Queen Vic Market with at least 2 projects under construction.

Not a fan of this one at all...agree with some above that is way too busy...in fact I would go so far as to say that it is messy, untidy, formless and totally without grace.

Let's face it ALL of this stuff is going to age SOOO badly...we will cringe at this and a number of others around town in less than 20 years.

The shape is boring...a box...with an applied texture on the outside and a few, Beirut-style blow outs that look ugly, formless and gratuitous. I would rather see superior spatial design, more attention to shape, volume and sculptural qualities...OR...go the super refined direction with a classic shape/volume/mass.

I would add i don't like the giant RMIT sign in this render tho.

No you're right on the button I think.

I always imagined that by 2010 our architecture would reach a point where we were able to achieve the civilised design of the past in new ways with new materials. I thought by now we'd be using lasers and robots (probably against Ruskin's writings but hey) to craft metals and stone quarried from deep in the earth and that our cities would look like something from Metropolis, Blade Runner or the Fifth Element or Coruscant in Star Wars where old and new blend perfectly. Instead we're rehashing the same old brutalist pre-cast concrete and coloured sun shades straight from the 1960s done on a larger scale and all the technology is applied within to give us hi-speed internet and carbon friendly spaces. We have got great new computer aided design technology, but the problem is that the art is being taken out of architecture and architects are being trained to forget about the past (clearly wrong in my opinion). This means that buildings are designed on their own merit. Only "old fashioned" architects pay attention to context these days. As far as materials go, there hasn't really been any sort of revolution. The closest we've come is materials like architectural polystyrene which just look tacky. Hopefully that will change sometime soon, but I digress.

Architects, like any "artists" or people in the creative sphere hate nothing more than being asked to re-do what has been done before. They will always try to push the boundaries to create something new. Problem is, in the past centuries if you came up with an 'out there' design, that didn't pass the test of time, people pulled it down. Now - you are dealing with huge buildings most of the time and if its a design that history deems ugly, you're stuck with it.

I actually like most modern designs. My biggest pet hate are big brutalist skyscrapers (e.g. La Banque), above ground carparks and little attention being paid to street level engagement. Southbank may be nice to look at from the Swanston Street Bridge, but take a walk through the back streets and its f***ing ugly as. Just as an example, I doubt most on here would disagree with the comment that Eureka has a pretty ugly podium. Most smaller buildings these days are actually very nice - some nice designs in South Yarra, Richmond, Nth Melb etc...

Regarding the RMIT design. They are obviously inspired somewhat by Story Hall and the plaudits that has received and are trying to push the envelope in a similar direction. Not too sure about all the jagged edges in those cut out bits or that red box sticking on the Oxford Hotel. Not enough detail to judge it at street level. Will be a b**ch to clean it!!
