Well I can only say that Minsk and Krakow are happy cities together because the terminus of Minsk subway Line 1 is Уручье (Urucze) while Krakow metro Line A is Заречье (Zarzecze). Polish-Belarussian brotherly harmony forever.

Does it mean Krakow is definitely going to build metro system instead of extending tram lines or is this just another voice in long lasting discussion how public transportation should shape up in that city?

The latter, of course. There's no metro project in any binding/current city planning documents. The lines sketched above are actually concept to be included in new documents being prepared at the moment.

Also, it's not said the metro would be fully underground, nor any other technical details are provided. It's also possible the project would evolve into rather pre-metro or real rapid tram system, though.

There's no money to build the system right now or in near future, the terrain is not "booked" for the future investment as well. So, summarizing:

- the metro project is being prepared as very general concept currently,
- the metro is the target rapid transport system in the city,
- but rather in next 20 - 40 years, not in the near future.

At the moment we are focused on brand new tram investment, which construction starts... this week. A picture (watch out, huge image)

I think metro should be considered seriously. Krakow is growing up as one of only few among polish cities. Now it is a second biggest city in this country.

If it was profitable to build it in Lausanne and Brescia it sure is profitable to build it in Krakow. Think of it not necessarily as solving the existing problem, but preventing the future one, and or creating a solid base for development and sustainable, independent and clean city transport. It brings multiple benefits, and IMHO is profitable to build it even in cities two times smaller than Krakow.

Agreed. Early plans of Metro Krakow date back to the 50s, later attempts also for Wroclaw and Lodz followed in the 70s and 80s. If it´s not a classic metro it would be a light-rail system like Porto with longer trains running partly underground in the city and taking other major tram-routes. I guess and hope that Lodz, Krakow, Wroclaw and Poznan will get something like this in future.

Kind regards

Poznań already has something like that - but not very long. The PST - fast tram runs independend from road traffic.

Yes, this was to be supposed to be part of a future metro-line which surprisingly should end at the fair-trade-area, not reaching the core of the city. Meanwhile there is PST in the north and at the stadium in the east.

Kind regards

New Fast Tram Line Section Wielicka -Lipska just begun

On September 6th 2013, a contract was signed in the Kraków City Office for the construction of a new fast tram line section in the city.

The ceremony was attended by the President of the City of Kraków -Jacek Majchrowski, the head of Public Utility and Transportation Infrastructure Office - Jerzy Marcinko, as well as the President of Mota-Engil Central Europe – Mr. Manuel Mota.

“Kraków sets its sights on investments in transport infrastructure. Today, we signed a contract for the construction of another section of the Kraków Fast Tram, between Lipska and Wielicka streets, with a huge long bridge over railroad rails” – said the President of Kraków, Mr. Jacek Majchrowski right after signing the contract with Mota – Engil Central Europe S.A. The Head of Mota-Engil Central Europe, Mr. Manuel Mota, admitted that for the company, the project is a very important investment. “We will use our best endeavours to hand the new tram line over to the citizens of Kraków as soon as possible” – he ensured.

The investment, to be commenced next week, will encompass the construction of a tram track formation, together with accompanying infrastructure, along the section from the crossing of Kuklińskiego-Lipska-Saska streets up to the junction with Wielicka street, between the Kabel and Dworcowa stops. Within the scope of the project, hubs will be built in all directions at junctions with the existent lines along Wielicka and Saska/Lipska streets.

The main element of the new fast tram line will be a long bridge for trams, cyclists and pedestrians. The facility will be composed of two parts, of which one will run over the railroad rails, while the other one will run over the existent road system. Total length of the long bridge will exceed 600 meters. Moreover, several streets, namely: Saska, Gromadzka, Prokocimska and Żołnierska, will undergo reconstruction in the process. The entire fast tram line will be over 2 kilometers long.

The investment is co-financed from the European funds. Contract value amounts to PLN 150 million and its duration is 24 months.

So how the entire new fast tram line is going to look like? As I understand this is just one of the sections planned to be built. Any plans, maps?
