Have heard a lot about "Kendriyo Bonchona" (Center depriving the state of WB) since my childhood. A nice article, putting things in perspective, was published yesterday in ABP:

west bengal was punished by nehru for being the state of Netaji. how the refugees from punjab were treated was in stark contrast to how those from east bengal were treated.

unfortunately our later day politicians extended a historical fact and claimed kendrer banchona when their own incompetence was at fault.

I am a great fan of Byomkesh Bakshi . I watch every episode of the Hindi serial of the same on Doordarshan National Channel every Tuesday 10:00 PM .

Does any one have any link/source for the movie "Chiriyakhana" in which the legendary Uttam Kr. played the role of Byomkesh . The film released in 1969 .

For those who did not know this about my District.. Nadia keeps a date with history

NADIA: While the entire nation celebrated Independence Day on August 15, one part of India observed the nationalevent on August 17 and 18.

On Thursday morning, Nadia district, about 95 km away from Kolkata, held Independence Day celebrations among much fanfare. Anjan Sukul, secretary of the 18 August, 1947 Committee, said they celebrated I-Day this year on August 18, a practice which was started in 1998. Nadia Zilla Independence Day Celebration Committee too observed August 18 as the Independence Day at Ranaghat.

Besides flag-hoisting, archery and rowing competitions for women were organized on Thursday morning. Sit and draw competitions were held for different age groups which were followed by a cultural programme and quiz. Sources said that appliances for the physically challenged and clothes for the poor would be distributed in the evening.

It might sound strange to many but the reason behind this delayed celebration is because of a cartographic error made 62 years ago.

On August 12, 1947 news on radio stated that India had been granted freedom but unfortunately a part of Nadia district had been awarded to East Pakistan. Pre-independent Nadia had five subdivisions: Krishnagar Sadar, Meherpur, Kusthia, Chuadanga and Ranaghat and all these areas except Nabadwip were given to East Pakistan.

It was not a diplomatic decision. It was a mistake made by Sir Cyril Radcliffe who had drawn an incorrect line on the map.

The news led to a protest in Nadia. Women objected to the decision by not lighting their ovens for two days, while the entire town observed a blackout. Muslim League leaders however hoisted flags of Pakistan near Krishnagar Rajbari and Public Library with their supporters patrolling streets, shouting 'Long Live Pakistan'.

When the word reached outgoing viceroy Lord Mountbatten, he ordered Radcliffe to rectify the mistake. Radcliffe made changes to the map and finally placed Ranaghat, Krishnagar, Shikarpur in Karimpur and Plassey in India. The rectifications, however, took some time and the final announcement was made on the night of August 17. The Pakistani flag at the Krishnagar Public Library ground was then taken off and the Tricolor hoisted a day later on August 18. Since then Nadia has been celebrating Independence Day both on August 17 and 18.

Friends, if there is any interested person who edit Google Maps, kindly try to make edits in New Town/Rajarhat area, specially the Central CBD area of New Town, Unnamed Complexes. Special attention is required in Action Area II.

Lakhs of fake ration card in Asansol
Aug 22, 2011, 01.44AM IST

ASANSOL: While food minister Jyotipriya Mallick is visiting PDS shops to make the system corrupt-free, lakhs of fake ration cards have been found in the Asansol. At present, the number of ration cards in Asansol is 20,32,000 whereas total population in the sub-division is 16,70,000. It has been assumed that 3,62,000 extra ration cards are either forged or belong to dead persons.

Burdwan district magistrate Onkar Singh Meena held a meeting with food department officials and Asansol SDO Sandip Dutta and directed to cancel fake ration cards. After the formation of the new government, about 30,000 fake cards have already been cancelled. tnn

"I have instructed the joint director (rationing), food controller and SDO to identify fake cardholders immediately and cancel them. I also visited various ration department offices in Asansol," Meena said. Till July, about 1,50,000 false ration cards have been cancelled in Burdwan district.

Mamata Banerjee, after taking over the chief ministership of the state, has repeatedly stressed on proper implementation of the PDS system. On her direction, the food minister is taking tough decisions. At this juncture, fake ration cards in once Left bastion of Asansol has raised serious question mark about how the system worked in the last 35 years.
"The fact that Asansol has more than 3,60,000 extra ration cards is shocking. It needs a high-level probe and tough action should be taken," demanded Asansol mayor Tapas Banerjee. District CPM secretary Amal Halder refuted the allegation that his party has highhanded the department. "It was the responsibility of the food department officials. Our party has nothing to do with it," he said.

I am told that parts of Khulna district was given to India whereas parts of Nadia was given to East Pakistan. The part of Nadia that was given to East Pakistan was later given back to India as India agreed to exchange the part of Khulna awarded to them. My Late grandfather used to reside at Ranaghat and had told me that even the Pakistan flag was hoisted there, which was later pulled down and replaced with the Indian flag on August 18.

Minister's Performance Review

Kolkata, Aug 24 (IANS) With her government nearing its first 100 days, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Wednesday reviewed the performances of all the ministers and asked them to shoulder responsibility for the projects being implemented by their respective departments.

‘This was a historic meeting. She did a A-Z review of the performance of all the departments. We discussed the problems and the bottlenecks,’ Finance Minister Amit Mitra told media persons after emerging from the deliberations.

In case of projects lagging behind, the reasons were identified.

‘From now on, every few month such meetings will be held,’ Mitra said.

Asked whether people were singled out for non-performance, he denied it.

‘No, no such thing happened today. The meeting was not called to pull up anybody’.

The chief minister also asked all her colleagues to take the onus for every project being implemented by their respective departments, he added.

Mitra said for projects were only 50 percent of the allocated funds have been released, the departments would have to spend that amount first, take a completion certificate and then submit the proposal for the remaining 50 percent of the project cost.

He said for projects being jointly carried out by the central and state governments, if the central funds were yet to be received, then the departments would have to complete their part of the work.

‘Then they should take a completion certificate. We will take up the issue with the central government.’

The Mamata Banerjee government, which was sworn in May 20, completes 100 days Saturday.
