Bengal has a tryst with Everest

http://www.thehindu.com/2010/05/18/s...1858940100.htm

Quote:
KOLKATA: It was a Bengali mathematician, Radhanath Sikdar, who back in 1852 calculated the height of a mountain to be 29,000 feet and declared it the highest peak in the world. Nearly 160 years after his discovery, Bengal's tryst with Mount Everest has come a full circle now with the first civilian expedition from the State scaling the peak on Monday.

Basanta Singha Roy and Debabrata Biswas of the Mountaineers' Association of Krishnanagar (MAK) in West Bengal's Nadia district set foot on the peak at 7-45 a.m.

“The team had intended to climb Everest from the Tibetan side through the North Col and the Northeast ridge, but they had trouble getting the necessary permissions from the Chinese Government as all of them work for the Indian Government,” Alok Roy, son of Ashok Roy who was one of the members of the expedition, told The Hindu over telephone from Krishnagar.

The seven-member expedition, including five members of MAK and two locals – Pasang Sherpa and Pemba Sherpa – had started off on April 4 to scale the peak from the Nepalese side of the mountain. They crossed the treacherous Khumbu Icefall on May 12. According to the schedule, they were to have reached the peak on Sunday morning but bad weather caused a delay.

“Finally at 10 p.m. on Sunday night they set off on the last leg of the climb and trekked through the night to reach the peak this morning. We are all excited to hear about the details of the expedition, but the only news we have got so far was the message from the base camp at 17,600 feet. My father said, ‘We have reached the top',” said Alok Roy.

“This is a momentous achievement and when the climbers return the State Government shall felicitate them,” said West Bengal's Sports Minister Kanti Ganguly.

Members of the association have earlier successfully climbed several peaks including Kailash, Kamet, Chowkhamba and Nanda Kot. The decision to climb Everest was to commemorate the organisation's silver jubilee year.

The State Government has awarded Rs. 5 lakh to the organisation to encourage its activities.

This monument was built in the year 1802 in memory of Susanna Annamaria. The building is one of the many old remenants of Dutch settlement in Chinsura, West Bengal, India between 1605 and 1825.

The following passage is from Wikipedia:

Dutch Bengal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_India)

In 1608 the Netherlands created their first Indian colony. In 1625 Vereenigde Oostindische Companie of Holland, more commonly known as the Jan Companie or VOC, established a settlement at Chinsurah a few miles south of Bandel to trade in opium, salt, muslin and spices. They built a fort called Fort Gustavius and a church and several other buildings. A famous Frenchman, General Perron who served as military advisor to the Mahrattas, settled in this Dutch colony and built a large house here. The Dutch settlement of Chinsurah survived until 1825 when the Dutch in their process of consolidating their interests in modern day Indonesia, ceded Chinsurah to the English in lieu of the island of Sumatra (part of the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824).

Fort Gustavius has since been obliterated from the face of Chinsurah and the church collapsed recently due to disuse, but much of the Dutch heritage remains. These include old barracks, the Governor's residence, General Perron's house, now the Chinsurah College and the old Factory Building, now the office of the Divisional Commissioner.

China to establish Tagore gallery in Kolkata

2010-05-27 23:10:00

Quote:
As India has begun year-long celebrations of the 150th birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, China announced it will establish a gallery in Kolkata in remembrance of the bard who had visited Beijing in 1924.

This was revealed to reporters here by Indian Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao here Thursday.

'Chinese President Hu Jintao has said the Chinese government will support and establish a gallery at the Rabindra Bharati University,' Rao told reporters.

Tagore was born in Jorasanko, in north Kolkata. The building was later turned into an university.

The setting-up of the gallery was discussed Thursday between Hu and Patil, who is here on a six-day visit here.

Rao said that Tagore had travelled Beijing in 1924 and the Chinese government wants to have a gallery to remember the poet's days in China.

She said the move has come at a time when the two emerging economies are celebrating the 60th anniversary of the establishment of their bilateral diplomatic ties.

During her on-going China visit, Patil will also unveil a Tagore statue Sunday at Mao Ming Road in Shanghai.

Tagore's journey to the city in 1924 was marked by radical hostility from student groups at the time.

The Indian bard had been invited by the Beijing Lecture Association in 1923 to deliver a series of talks as part of its objective to have foreign scholars come and talk to Chinese intellectuals.

However, the invitation to Tagore created an unprecedented uproar which culminated in strong hostility against him as well as against Liang Qichao, president of the association, by radical student circles and some ultra Left-oriented political leaders.

Mercer’s 2010 Quality of Living

Kolkata is not doing that bad except the ECO city ranking. Anyway, with the old auto bus banning, introducing more new buses and by completing more sanitation projects etc Kolkata will go further up in near future..

Questions for all the forumers who are regular to new town

what is the current situation of newtown in terms of basic ammenities??..viz, street lamps, roads, drinking water, sewerage, transportation and the most important thing..law and order..
is it still an unsafe zone after 8pm?
has people full flegedly started residing in Rajarhat..because AFAIK the highest number of resale flats are in Rajarhat..are the complexes now getting electricity or still dependent upon DGs?
and what about the garbage disposal setup in newtown..IMO the admin should look upon this factor or else in near future when newtown would have a huge population it would be in same situation as it is now of KMC areas..and yes the last time i went to DLF newtown..the one where IBM and Vodafone is..has around 20-30 shops selling everything..this thing should also be taken care of or else very soon the hawker menace would haunt the people of newtown..

All of you, thanks for the appreciation.

Some Observations:

Well, on my 2 hrs of driving in "Newtown", except for the Arterial Road, i did not find a single piece of road which does not have an uneven surface. Some roads are so bad, that terming them as roads will be an utter injustice to the word. You need an Off Road Bike or Quadra to travel through this areas.

The so called road leading to DLF , Elita Vista & SP City is just shocking. One visit to this area - next day change the shockers of your car. Just imagine some part of SP City is ready for possession - who will go there?

Roads or i shld say by-lanes of Sec -V are not even big enough for gully cricket. Come July-Aug, its a nightmare.

Electricity & Water supply is anybodies guess. We keep on reading articles in newspaper of the difficulties faced by the brave souls who have tried to make Newtown their HOME. Hats off to them.

For Sec-V, the gr8 JUSCO - which keeps TATA NAGAR so CLEAN, is taking ages to make the basic amenities. But i don't blame them, our SUPER PLANNERS never even bothered about these things when they started SALTLEC.

But, these things i guess will get better with time [fingers crossed]. What hurt me most, and i guess all of you who loves to see this New City [ Newtown & Sec V] coming up is the entangled loops of cables hanging like nobody's business from post to post. Couldn't our SUPER PLANNERS plan a simple thing ,did they ever heard the word - underground cabling. Its impossible to get a good pic of these Beautiful Buildings without a cable popping from somewhere in the picture crisscrossing the building.

Only ONE question to the SUPER PLANNERS OF NEWTOWN & SEC-V - When are you going to understand the subject called TOWN PLANNING?

I know everybody, I am sounding very negative but the fact is these beautiful buildings also require a proper back drop to showcase their brilliance.

For sixty years we have been fooled into believing that our salvation lies in villages, in farming and making jams and jellies. And we continue to be fooled by the leaders and the intellectuals on this count even today. Result is that no one has paid any attention to urban development. And as for rural development - nothing much has happened in that front either despite all the so called concern for farmers by the leading lights of the state.

I wonder if with Miss Mamata's clean sweep of Bengal and getting control of Salt Lake and Kolkata will change the fortunes of the two cities.

While New Town has no elected body, will Miss Mamata relent and allow electricity to be transmitted and distributed? Or if she becomes CM of Bengal in the near future, will she demolish all New Town buildings and roads and return all the land to her farmer supporters? What is her stance on New Town?

Miss Mamata holds the keys right now to Kolkata and Bengal's future. She has a lot of intellectuals in her jholi. We will have to wait and watch.

yes...i second u on ur observations...and i would like to highlight a point that i have stayed in tatanagar/jamshedpur for 18yrs and have seen the planning bosy JUSCO..maintaining the city which has every basic ammenities which a man can dream of...roads smooth as cream with proper road signs and lane markings, enough greenery to supprt, proper traffic management, good lighting..i.e. no powercuts, and not a single lampost having 'tubelights' but having vapour lights..and yes proper sewerage, garbage disposal and rainwater drainage system. also no water logging!!!
so when i came to know that sec-5 has awarded the drainage repairing system to jusco i thought that there would be a good drainage system but 2 yrs down the line its the same story..as it was in 2007..if not worse..
now jusco being an independent body is stuck in the game of beureaucracy and red tapism played by our so called politicians..so even if they plan to make the city better the top level never make it happen..if we start counting the mistakes made by the planners in developing sec-5 it would be a never ending stuff!!!
the admin body of sec-5 (sorry to say) is a b******t!...i know its easy to say than to be done...but then dint we give them enough time???..instead of doing 'moron kale horinaam'...had they done it from the strach bengal would have been the best state in India..without doubts...trust me even bihar is doing better of these days!!
