Sudheesh Nair's Ooty trip

Time to head the road again. Its been some time since I had gone for a long drive. Recently most of my leaves/holidays are taken up by Trivandrum trips which I do by flight/train journeys.

We planned a brief weekend trip, starting from Bangalore on 23rd April 09 (Friday) and coming back by 25th April 09 (Sunday). It was difficult getting accomodation, but we managed a 2 bed room cottage at 'Cairn Hill Resorts' for Rs.3500/- per night.

http://www.cairnhillresorts.com/

I planned to drive to Ooty, in my 2002 (December) Indica V2 DLS. I had driven earlier to many hillstations like Kodaikanal, Wayanad, Munnar, Ponmudi etc in my car which has now cloaked more than 1 lakhs kms.

My cruising speed was 80-110kph on the highway stretches in the plains and 40-60 kph in the ghats (Gudallur Route).

Took 8 hours 30 minutes to reach the Resort from my home near HAL Airport, Bangalore, including the short breaks. Of course I lost 1 hour 30 minutes in leaving Bangalore since I started at 9.30 AM only. It was 10.45 AM, when I got to the SH-17, Mysore Road.

Route: Onward journey

Bangalore-Mysore (SH 17)-Nanjangud-Gundlupet-Bandipur (NH 212-in Karnataka)-Mudumalai-Teppakad-Gudallur (NH 212 in Tamilnadu)-Pyakara-Ooty (NH 67).

Route: Return Journey

Ooty-Kalahatty Ghat road-Mavanalla-Masinagudi-Teppakad-Mudumalai-Bandipur-Gundlupet-Nanjangud-Mysore-Bangalore

We (I and my wife) started the journey at about 9.30 am on 23rd April 09. As usual, the city traffic in Bangalore was hectic.

After 15 minutes we are still in 'Old Airport' road. This is 'Command Hospital stretch where you could press the accelarator a little bit.

At 10.20 am, we have covered Corporation circle and is getting in to the flyover which goes some 2-3 km over the city market area and takes you to 'Mysore Road'

23rd KM Time: 10.44 am. (Took about 1 hour 15 minutes to cover 23 kms). We are getting in to SH 17: Bangalore-Mysore road

NICE Road crosses over. Sorry for being out of focus. It is not always possible to get the pics in good focus when your other hand is at the wheel.

Closer to Bangalore, SH 17 seems to have lost its charm. The road is good, only issue is the 'speed breakers' and 'barricades' which appear every now and then.

At 81th KM, Time: 12.11 PM, we stopped at Cafe Coffee Day outlet near Chennapatna. Spend some half an hour, had Capuchino, packed some Chicken sandwitches for lunch. From here it woul be difficult finding good restaurants of CCD standard along the highway, so no stoppage for food anymore till Ooty.

There are 'Interceptors' waiting to trap you. So better to stick to the speed limit of 80 kph.

Nearing MANDYA

Its pure bliss. Driving becomes interesting when the scenery around is good. We are getting closer to the greener Kauvery Delta.

My wife was a good navigator. She jotted down the kilometers covered as well as time stamps at intervals. Moreover she had the duty to give me 'refreshments' at regular intervals inlcuding fruits like grapes. I had a slight sore throat, so we had taken hot water in flask too. I use to have all those while at the wheel.

Sudeeshetta, I suggest you to go for 'Raid De Himalaya' as you've got a good navigator.

Nice pics, as always. I can't believe that you can manage both driving and capture pics while driving.

Waiting for the rest of the journey pics.

WELCOME TO HERITAGE CITY-MYSORE.

150th KM. Time: 1.18 PM- Mysore Ring Road Junction. Ooty is 163 kms ahead. We have to take a left turn from the junction ahead (Columbia Asia Hospital jn)

Sorry again for the blurred image..

Ring road passes through deserted areas, with plain land devoid of any thick vegetation. You can see some houses/colonies of Mysore on the inner side of the road.

We are going in a clockwise direction around Mysore.

In about 10 minutes of time, we have crossed Mysore.I just thought of the Six lane Ring Road of Bangalore, in which you may take about one/one and half hours to cover at least two quadrants

Time:1.44 PM. We have covered the turn to Chamundi Hills and on NH 212- Msyore-Calicut (Kozhikode) highway.

We are on the way to Nanjangud, some 25 kms away. These JNNURM Volvos (401) do service between Mysore and Nanjangud.

Road till Nanjangud was bad, with uneven surface and broken patches. There were unexpected humps/rumble strips which I decided to hit and jump over rather than screeching to a halt from 80 kph.

Calicut is 201 km and Ooty 146 km away. Started to see a lot of Kerala registered vehicles as well as shop/hotel boards in Malayalam.

I think we are goin to cross the KABINI river. The Nanjangud railway line is on the left. What you see is an abandoned rake on the old bridge. Perhaps Akash can say some story about that train rake.

We are almost in Nanjangud. A Mysore SLF being chased by a Kerala SRTC Fast Passenger bus.

Nanjangud was a very small town. As usual I was not able to click in town.

Road from Nanjangud towards Gundlupet was well surfaced. Was able to hit 100 kph in between.

Only speed breakers are these buses

I had filled full tank Diesel from SHELL at Bangalore. Just wanted to check the overall mileage. So stopped at a Fuel station after Gundlupet and again topped up. The mileage was about 18 kpl.

Continuing the journey. A Kerala SRTC Super Fast bound for Bangalore in the opposite direction.

We are getting in to Bandipur..

237th KM. Time: 3 PM: We have entered Bandipur Wild Life Sanctuary.

We might have been around an altitude of 700m-750m above MSL so far. Now slight gradient starts and at Gudallur it is about 1072m. The altitude of Bandipur Sanctuary varies between 700m toabout 1450m.

I began to feel hungry since we had skipped the lunch. Started eating sandwitches while driving through Bandipur. My wife used to put the sandwitch pieces in my mouth so that I can concentrate on the road She was busy with the chores of supplying me food, tissue paper, water etc.

I had though of keeping a distance behind that Mahindra Commander Jeep since there are chances of getting in front of elephants. But his speed was getting reduced and I had to overtake him. Perhaps he was also trying to be behind somebody.

First sighting of wild life. Atleast have seen some deer. And noon/afternoon are not the best times for wild life sighting, it has to be during nights.

249th KM: Time 3:18 pm: Entering Tamilnadu at Mudumalai.

This Gate was guarded by Tamilnadu Forest officials. I stopped here to take this photo. One guard came near my car and asked in Malayalam where I was going. (He might have noted my car's KL.01 registration)

to be contd......

No, it is not a narrow gauge, it is a meter gauge rake. Perhaps they might have retained one rake during gauge converison.

And no thanks to me Sudeeshetta? (sorry I shouldn't ask and get appreciation )

Is everything back to normalcy in Ooty? I went through a news few months back which mentioned that the rains and landslides which occured then caused much havoc in Ooty, also causing damage to the railway line connecting to Mettupalayam?

Have the authorities restored back everything?

Hey Krishna, 'ariyathe vittu poyatha, kshamichu kala' ketto...

It is everything OK in Ooty. Roads are good..Only thing was that I was disappointed on the weather. I expected to be chilly and had packed woollens. But Ooty turned out to be warm during day time and not chilly during nights.

I thought of spending some 'cool' days cuddling under blanket in Ooty, but was surprised to find it warm or rather 'not cool'.

The location where I stayed was perfect in natural settings, 10 cottages in a 10 acre hill side with greenery/farms around. Even then I felt warm at night, I had worn a pullover and no blanket. I had to open the door cum window of my balcony window at night to let have little chill inside. I had a temp gauge which showed the room temp at 24 degrees celcius.

And the first time I drove with A/c in Ooty during noon. Firstly we had gone to Pine Forest. I was profusely sweating after the descend to the lakeside and then the ascend. Had to put on A/c to cool off. After that parked the car in Pykara, under sun and went for walk near the waterfalls. After one hour when we came back the inside of the car was hot like an oven. Then had to put on the A/c at full speed for some time.

By after noon/evening, it rained somewhat heavily in Ooty. Normally it happens in summers in Bangalore/Kerala when day temp rises. We went to a restaurant in downtown Ooty after the rains. I saw for the first time ceiling fans rotating at full speed. (The restaurant was a fully covered one without any ventilation)

I had an american made multipurpose trekking aid, with Compass, temp guage, whistle, and a convex lens to make fire. At Pykara, during noon, the temp guage to was showing 30 degrees when placed under Sun. I use to check the temp on newspapers of various cities and had seen Ooty to be at 12-25 degrees before the trip, but now I doubt about the authenticity of those newspaper numbers

During the drive back, via the Kalahatty ghat road also, we were feeling warm.
