Quote:
MVRDV has used a pioneering glass technology to replace the brick facade of a former townhouse in Amsterdam with a transparent replica, more suited to the building's new use as a Chanel boutique.

Described by the Rotterdam studio as the first of its kind, the innovative facade of Crystal Houses Amsterdam uses glass bricks, windows frames and architraves to recreate the city's traditional architectural style.

The glass bricks are held in place with a transparent high-strength glue. According to MVRDV, the construction is "in many ways, stronger than concrete", as was proven during the testing process.

Towards the upper storeys, the glass elements merge with the original terracotta brickwork to create the illusion of a dissolving wall.

I love those glass bricks. They are so much nicer than the glass block because these bricks are actually solid glass!!!

That's some really interesting method.
We've waited a long time for the result, but it was worth it.
It looks really amazing, especially at night with the lights on.

I've to admit, that glass to brick facade is amazing. And it wouldn't surprise me if it really was "the first of its kind", I've never seen a facade like this before.

It's amazing indeed. I heard they tested the concept at the Technical University of Delft for the first time?
Anyway, this is what it looks like at night. Even cooler if you ask me:

Summertime

Summertime is the perfect urban living area in the business heart of Amsterdam — also a trendy hotspot for internationals seeking a residence in a diverse international environment and for hedonist cosmopolitans who only want the best in a prime location. Both appreciate it for its exclusive location, strong identity, sustainability and liveliness.

The design consists of two buildings with a total of 197 (mostly middle segment) rental apartments which taper inwards to maximize views and sunlight. The towers consist of a system of stacked and shifted apartments as three-dimensional 'Pixels'. With this simple principle, a large variety of outdoor spaces and individual readability of the apartments is created. On the ground floor, approximately 1,100 m2 of public space will be realized along with commercial spaces including a nursery. A one-storey underground parking garage connects both buildings and holds approximately 150 parking spots. With sustainability measures such as alternative energy generation, low temperature heating, grey water recycling and green roofs, this plan meets the high standard that the municipality of Amsterdam is pursuing in sustainability in the upcoming years.

Construction began January 2015; the first homes are scheduled to be completed in late 2016.
