Scope of the work: structural concept and elaboration of documents for construction.
Customer: Anaklia Government (Georgia).
Collaborators: Dr. Eng. Salvador Cremades.
Length: 552 m (117.6+316.8+117.6m)
Budget: study phase.

Type of structure and singular characteristics: suspension footbridge with two main cables, starting separated from abutment and then coming together on pile heads to separate again over the central span, following the plan geometry of the deck. It is a spatial suspension system, since the planes of suspension cables are not within a plane. This confers a singular geometry. Piles are metallic. The deck takes advantage of the mixed action of the closed steel box and the reinforced concrete upper slab. Wind barriers have been designed to protect pedestrians from the wind without undermining visibility.

Batumi Boulevard Footbridges







2009, Batumi. Adjara. Georgia.
Status: study phase.
Scope of the work: conceptual study of alternatives.
Customer: Adjara Government (Georgia).
Collaborators: Dr Salvador Monleón Cremades.
Total length: Footbridge 1: 25.5m Footbridge 2: 20m
Budget: study phase.
Type and singular characteristics: these structures have been designed with a resistant system composed of 3 top diminished arches in steel to act as dual supported Vierendeel beams, with maximum edge in central span and minimum in the supports. The total width is 15m and the angle of splay is 10º.

Anaklia is connected to Ganmukhuri by a new bridge

Mikheil Saakashvili visited Anaklia and Ganmukhuri today. The President of Georgia opened a newly constructed bridge on the Enguri. The bridge is about 360 meters long. Mikheil Saakashvili spoke with the local population as well. Before that the President opened the patriots' camp in Anaklia. The camp is designed in Lego style and can accommodate about 300 children. President Saakashvili has not made an official comment. The camp will receive guests starting this year and will host Byelorussian and Polish children as well.

The foundation of new railway was laid in Makhinjauri

The President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili attended the presentation of the new project of railway in Makhinjauri. The President of Georgia addressed the population holding the symbol of rail in his hand. During his speech he noted that this project would increase the number of employed people. He said that his major aim is to abolish poverty and have 100 percent of employment rate.

"It is my principle to do everything in order to have better live. You all deserve it. Batumi must be turned into the best city not only on Black Sea region, today it is like that already, but into a very comfortable city where we will have 100 percent of employment rate. It is possible, but we need all communications to be ready for that. This is why we need this railway, the highway etc. We are planning to start the construction of new bypass road to Batumi, this project will not only employ many people, but it will give us a chance to put the railway far away from the sea coast. We are planning to put the railway higher, up in the mountains and much space will be emptied for new resorts this way. This way there will be less traffic in the center of the city and on the other hand it will become much easier to get to Batumi, because this new road will only take 2 hours and 50 minutes. Besides these all we will have more chance to attract investments in Batumi. Batumi will really become a very rich city", the President of Georgia stated.

Due to this new project the railway line will move far away from seacoast and it will give a chance to Batumi to become the center of the region. The traffic of load and the number of passengers will increase; this is one of the very important factors for tourism. New railway line will be built together with French Railways and five thousand people will be employed on this project.

The President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili opened a monument on Heroes' Square in a Military Uniform. "No matter how many new buildings or how many cities we construct, how many new roads or highways we build, all the basis for it is the heroism of these people", Mikheil Saakashvili stated. Mikheil Saakashvili said that he was always worried about the fact that there was no monument erected in honor of our heroes, it seemed that the heroism of these people was forgotten. "There were people, who wanted to surrender and live under the pressure of occupants, these people left Georgia then, but patriots didn't do it. Patriots are peoples of various nationalities, there are names of Ossetians, Armenians, Azerbaijani, Abkhaz on the monument. I will never separate them they are three times Georgians. They, together, saved Georgia for at the cost of their own blood", Mikheil Saakashvili pointed out. He expressed his wish not to add new names on the monument, but he noted that every Georgian should be ready to defend their country in the decisive moment. "There are names of 4 000 heroes here. There are many empty places and I would wish not to add new names. But if we want Georgia to exist, we all must be ready, we all must put on this uniform, we have to be ready to get the weapons and in the decisive moment be ready to fall dead on the Georgian soil and put our names on the empty places of this monument". Mikheil Saakashvili stated. The monument will be lit at night and it can be seen from any flying object. "The idea of the monument is based on being light, transparent and not heavy, not very sad. The main thing is that their names must be written with gold letters on this monument. This monument must be like a shining torch that will be a big column of light and whoever flies over Georgia will be able to see it from the airplane. This is a shining soul of our warriors", Mikheil Saakashvili pointed out. Despite the fact that foreign forces occupy the best parts of our country the world could see that Georgia stands like a symbol of freedom. "If the plan of Russia's Prime Minister had been fulfilled in 2008 August, Georgia would not have its statehood, today there would not have existed the capital of Georgia and our national flag wouldn't have flown. Today we wouldn't have held a parade, but we would celebrate the anniversary of Soviet Georgia's birthday, that unfortunately is done by some people. Georgian heroes stopped for several days the movement of the very army that occupied Afghanistan in 24 hours, Czechoslovakia in 48 hours and Hungary in several days, at the cost of their lives", the President of Georgia stated. Georgian warriors gave a chance to the Georgian government to inform the world about Russian aggression and stop Russia with all diplomatic means - I will be in debt before them all my life" Mikheil Saakashvili stated.

Mikheil Saakashvili visited Rike and went to see a Flower Clock

The President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili visited Rike, where he went to see a Flower Clock. Martin Weltkamp from Netherlands designed a Flower Clock. The mechanism of a clock is Swiss, the arrows of a clock are managed from the satellite. A clock is symbolically made of colors of EU and Georgian flags.

The President spoke about Rike development plan. "Not long ago this place was packed with restaurants and cars, it was very ugly here. Now this place will turn into the best place not only in the Caucasus but in whole Europe as well", noted the President. He added that some works have already started regarding the construction of the cultural center on Rike, where concert and exhibition halls will be built. Besides this it is planned to construct a ropeway in the direction of Ortachala. "We will turn this place into one of the most important tourism centers around the world", noted the President.

Mikheil Saakashvili Opens New Aerobics Hall and Tennis Court in Kutaisi

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has opened a new aerobics hall and tennis court in the city of Kutaisi, Imereti region.
The President played tennis with young tennis players. Later he made comments for journalists.
According to Saakashvili, new swimming pool and ‘Torpedo’ stadium will be opened in the nearest days in Kutaisi.
Later Saakashvili visited new railway station and viewed a new train.
Mikheil Saakashvili also met with population, gathered in railway square.

Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili arrived in the city of Kutaisi today, where he opened new tennis courts and a gym. President even played a game with a young tennis player.
Afterwards, Saakashvili viewed the reconstructed railway station in the city. He talked with the people gathered outside the station. He listened to the problems of the locals and assigned the regional governor to conduct all necessary works for unlimited providing of water to the residents of Kutaisi.
Saakashvili said Kutaisi was the geographic centre of the country and the situation and the living conditions should be improved there by rehabilitation of road and tourist infrastructure. He said the projects, which were underway in the city, should create more jobs for locals in the future.

Mikheil Saakashvili opened tennis courts and gymnasium in Kutaisi.

The President of Georgia played tennis together with junior sportsmen on new courts. Later he made a comment to the journalists. The President said, that the idea of opening courts comes from the population of Kutaisi. In order to bring up healthy future generation, it is important to develop sports infrastructure in every region.

“My friends and I were playing in Batumi and I met Kutaisi citizens there. I was surprised because they had come so far to play. Then I discovered that there were no courts in Kutaisi. I promised them to resolve the problem of courts and many other problems. Up to now there were no courts in Kutaisi, the stadium was destroyed the residents of Kutaisi studied swimming on parquet. After the courts and the gymnasium, a new swimming pool and the central stadium “Torpedo” will open in Kutaisi in several days,”- the President of Georgia said.

Mikheil Saakashvili saw new railway station and new train in Kutaisi later. The President traveled with the residents of Kutaisi by the train produced in Georgia. Mikheil Saakashvili stated that in order to develop the railway and to employ more people, trains should be produced in Georgia. “It is true, we should invest money in the railway system development, but the main capital is the people. It is not easy to bring up specialists in this sphere.” - the President of Georgia noted.

One of the workers passed a request of Kutaisi population to the President. They wish the train to move from Kutaisi to Batumi in the morning hours during summer. Mikheil Saakashvili liked the idea and noted that during tourist summer season the residents of Kutaisi will be able to arrive in Batumi in the morning and depart in the evening.

Mikheil Saakashvili also met the population gathered at the railway station.” Kutaisi - the second capital must not only be a slogan for you. It should mean speedy movement in every direction, real employment, it should also mean the return of the function of the geographical centre to Kutaisi and no marshland in the capital. There we should have ways, infrastructure, water system and sewage system. New jobs will appear on the basis of these improvements. In order create an industrial boom, preparation process is important,“ - the President of Georgia declared.

The main problem in the occupied territories is that the regimes in this parts take the russian money and put it in their own pockets. The "normal" population in the occupied territories see nothing from this money. I think that especially occupied South Ossetia is a "black hole" for Russian money and it won't be long in coming that the people in russian ask herself for the sense of this sheer waste of money.

International Crisis Group has published annual report on the situation in Georgia`s breakaway South Ossetia region titled South Ossetia - The Burden of Recognition.
`South Ossetia is no closer to genuine independence now than in August 2008, when Russia went to war with Georgia and extended recognition. The small, rural territory lacks even true political, economic or military autonomy. Moscow staffs over half the government, donates 99 per cent of the budget and provides security. South Ossetians themselves often urge integration into the Russian Federation, and their entity’s situation closely mirrors that of Russia’s North Caucasus republics. Regardless of the slow pace of post-conflict reconstruction, extensive high-level corruption and dire socio-economic indicators, there is little interest in closer ties with Georgia. Moscow has not kept important ceasefire commitments, and some 20,000 ethnic Georgians from the region remain forcibly displaced. At a minimum, Russians, Ossetians and Georgians need to begin addressing the local population’s basic needs by focusing on creating freedom of movement and economic and humanitarian links without status preconditions,` the report says.

The Chairman of Government of Adjara to open the road to Gomarduli

The rehabilitation of Skhepi - Gomarduli road in Shuakhevi is finished. This road sector connects two valleys and a few villages. The new road significantly shortens the way to resort area.

Levan Varshalomidze sighted the five kilometer road sector by the car.

The rehabilitation project of the Gomarduli road that started one year ago is financed by International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

The rehabilitation works for the sum of GEL one million were implemented by the Company "Gza" Ltd.

The construction of touristic complex in Gomarduli continues simultaneously. Also is planed implementation of infrastructural projects.

Mobile Plant Health Clinics advise Georgian farmers on plant diseases
Tuesday, June 8
On June 7 the opening ceremony of the Plant Health Clinic established by the Institute of Phytopathology in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture of Georgia and the National Service for Food Safety, Veterinary and Plant Protection, took place in Marneuli at the Lomtagora Farmers’ Company.

There will be four such clinics opened as part of the development project funded by the UK Global Partnership Programme to build capacity in agricultural sciences in Georgia, in which agronomists, phytopathologists and other professionals will help farmers tackle the problems caused by different plant diseases. UK funding has made it possible for four international expert plant scientists to provide additional help to Georgian specialists at the clinics during June 2010.

“The farmers bring samples of their diseased plants to us. We diagnose them and prescribe safe, affordable and locally available pest management solutions,” said Guram Memarne, Director of the Institute of Phytopathology of Georgia. The clinics aim to increase farmers’ first-hand knowledge of the range of diseases encountered in the regions of Georgia and therefore help improve crop production and therefore the socio-economic situation on the ground.

Plant Health Clinics will be opened during the height of the growing season at seven locations across Georgia over the next two years. In 2010 they will be opened in Kobuleti, Marneuli, Gardabani and Sighnaghi. Dedoplistskaro, Kutaisi and Akhaltsikhe will receive this service in 2011.

Those pictures are from Abkhazia (and many from 2007 btw). Thanks to Georgian army agression in early 90's Abkhazia is still unpopulated and many places are abandoned. Currently resonctruction is taken place in Sukhumi and Gagra and some tourist places where Russian tourists are coming for holiday each summer.

partly true. Corruption is a big problem but S.Ossetia especially places that were bombed by Georgian army are under major reconstruction !

ruslan33 comeon remeber tbilisi and most of the georgia was detroyed in early 1990-1993 and look at it now ... there nothing have to do who bombed what, batumi infrustructure is much better than both abkhazian and osetian combined together not only batumi soon will be anaklia poti etc.. kind of like signagi so georgia is definently doing much better than both abkhazia and osetia taken together (remeber my words abkhazia and osetia soon gonna be part of georgia) now it's your job how seriously u will take this or act like a baby and lought about it again ...

Georgia of course is doing better. What do you expect S.Ossetia was bombed by them just 2 years ago. Georgia got billions of dollars of aid from EU+America. We get nothing, only some Russian money which is already stolen in Moscow by corrupt officials
