WAT PHRA KAEO, Bangkok
(continued from previous page)

Some 10-20% of the entire stretch of Wat Phra Kaeo’s perimeter cloister hosts the Ramakien Gallery.

There are 178 painting panels depicting the complete story of the Ramakien. Here’s only a few of them…

The Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the most important building of Wat Phra Kaeo.

Unfortunately, cameras are not allowed inside the temple. The Emerald Buddha is the smallest buddha image inside the wat, but is the most important image.

Encircling the exterior of the temple are 112 garudas, mythical beasts that are half-man, half-bird. They are shown holding hagas (serpents) and are typical of the wat’s dazzling decorative details.

Everyone has to remove their shoes before going inside the temple. Monks don't have a problem with that.

THE GRAND PALACE

The Grand Palace was the king’s official residence from 1782 to 1946. Today, the royal family resides at Chitrlada Palace.

There are around 20 small and large buildings in the Grand Palace complex outside of the Wat Phra Kaeo compound. Some huge buildings like the Borom Phiman Mansion can only be seen from its guarded gates which is some 50 meters from the mansion itself. Only a few can be viewed up close and the rest are off limits to the public.

The Aramindra Winitchai Hall

Beside it is the smaller Dusita Phirom Hall…

… and side by side with other smaller structures.

This cluster of connected buildings is the grand residence of the palace complex.

The majestic Chakri Maha Prasat Hall, also known as the Grand Palace Throne Hall, or Chakri Throne Hall. It was built in 1882 neo-classical style with a distinct Thai roof by British architect John Chinitz.

Beside the Grand Palace Hall is the cross-shaped Dusit Maha Prasat Hall or Dusit Throne Hall. The original structure was built in 1784 but was struck by lightning 5 years later. It was rebuilt in a smaller scale as what it is now.

Nearby is the Aphorn Phimok Prasat Pavilion. It was originally built as a royal changing room when the king is giving audience at the Dusit Throne Hall.

One of two gates to the Prasat Hall compound.

From Tha Tien Pier, Wat Arun is just across the Chao Phraya River, a one stop boat ride.

Wat Arun is named after Aruna, the Indian god of dawn. This popular image of the wat, as seen from the Chao Phraya, appears on the Baht10 coin.

Aside from the central monument, the Wat Arun complex also has other buildings which may be a temple or an administrative center.
