MYSORE: Mysore may get one more satellite bus-stand or Inter-Modal Transit Centre (IMTC) to ease traffic congestion and strengthen public transport infrastructure in the city.

The satellite bus-stand has been proposed near the sewage farm at J.P. Nagar.

A team of elected representatives and officials of the Mysore City Corporation and an official of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) conducted a spot inspection of the proposed site on Saturday.

The proposed bus-stand is in addition to the IMTCs at R.S. Naidu Nagar, Sathagalli, Kuvempunagar and Yelwal.

Mayor Sandesh Swamy, Mysore City Corporation Commissioner K.S. Raykar, KSRTC Divisional Commissioner M.N. Srinivas, JNNURM Superintending Engineer Suresh Babu and corporation Superintending Engineer Mahesh were present during the inspection.

The R.S. Naidu Nagar IMTC was opened to the public last year, and work on the other three projects are under way. The projects have been taken up under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

Importantly, the IMTCs are coming up along the proposed Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) corridor.

The land for the proposed bus-stand has been identified. It is owned by the Mysore City Corporation.

“The MCC is demanding market price for leasing or renting out the land. The final decision rests with the KSRTC,” sources at the MCC said.

The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is constructing the IMTCs under the Rs. 108-crore Transport Master Plan, which aims at a better public transport system by providing a host of facilities.

The Transport Plan was approved under the JNNURM, making way for the launch of several transport development projects, including the modernisation of the mofussil bus-stand (MBS) and the city bus-stand (CBS). While the renovated CBS and MBS were opened last year, the other projects are under various stages of completion.

Once the five IMTCs are ready, the KSRTC plans to shift inter-city services (to some destinations) originating from the mofussil bus-stand to the IMTCs, based on traffic density and commuter demand.

PREPAID AUTO STAND AT SUB-URBAN BUS STAND TO BE SHIFTED

Mysore, Feb. 11 (KK&DM)-The prepaid auto stand outside Suburban Bus Stand will be shifted near St. Bartholomew’s Church.

DCP (Crime & Traffic) P. Rajendra Prasad, accompanied by Traffic ACP Shankaregowda, KSRTC Divisional Controllers M.N. Srinivas & Vasu, MCC Deputy Commissioner K.S. Dharmappa, MCC Zone-6 Assistant Commissioner Thimappa, Town Planning Officer Shivaram and other officials visited Sub-urban Bus Stand this morning to review the logistics of shifting the pre-paid auto stand to the side of St. Bartholomew Church, which is close to Sub-urban Bus Stand.

The decision to shift the auto stand was taken as the present location hampers the entry of buses, causing traffic jams on the road in front of the bus stand.

The MCC officials were directed to evict hawkers, vendors and unauthorised cobblers' kiosks near St. Bartholomew’s Church, as the MCC has declared the area as 'Hawker-free Zone.'

State to implement intelligent transport system in Mysore

Karnataka is in the process of implementing the Intelligent Transport System for monitoring and tracking city buses on a real time basis in the historical city of Mysore. The government has floated global tenders to select the agency for implementing the project, part funded by the World Bank, a senior government official said.

“We are in the process of selecting an agency to provide software, hardware, GPS devices, maintain and operate the system on a real-time basis. The system will help us track the precise location of a bus during its scheduled trip and find out if it is plying on time or behind schedule, so that we can plan the next trip,” Gaurav Gupta, managing director, Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), said.

He told Business Standard, Mysore city was selected for implementing this project under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) two years ago and a pilot project was done to study the feasibility of the project.
Now, the project is being taken up on a comprehensive manner at an estimated cost of Rs 21 crore, of which Rs 7 crore is in the form of a grant from the World Bank, while the rest is provided by the state government. The selected agency would provide the software, hardware, GPS devices that will be installed on the bus and communication network. The system will also provide information on the movement and location of the buses on a real-time basis to passengers at bus terminals and bus shelters across the city.

“Normally, once the bus leaves the depot we will not know where it is on the way. With the help of the intelligent transport system we can track down the location of a bus and this will help us manage our fleet with the help of the software,” Gupta said.

Presently, around 400 buses ply in Mysore every day. Under the system, all buses will be monitored. The government has completed a pilot and now the project will be implemented comprehensively in the city, he said. “We have reached the last part of the tendering process and will complete it in the next one month and the successful bidder will get a year’s time to implement the system,” Gupta said.

He said a team of officials from the World Bank visited Mysore many times and froze specifications of the project.

They will also monitor and inspect the progress of the project closely until it is implemented and launched.

Based on the success of the project, a similar system will be implemented in Bangalore city too, he added.

Tumkur: Transport Minister R. Ashok announced that the State Government will bring out the transport policy shortly. He was speaking after inaugurating the city bus service at Tumkur on Friday. Mr. Ashok said the transport policy was in the final stage of completion and would be out shortly.It would include solutions to the problems of drivers, conductors, mechanics and other staff; their salaries and basic infrastructure.He also said the Cabinet will be expanded after the budget.He pointed out that the Government had allotted 104 buses to the district during 2010-11 and 25 more buses would be assigned to the district by March 31. Volvo bus services would start this week between Tumkur and Bangalore, he said.Initially, two Volvo buses will run between Bangalore and Tumkur. The Bangalore KSRTC bus-stand will be modernised at a cost of Rs. 1,300 crore said Mr. Ashok.Ticket booking via mobile phones would also be launched.

Rs 500 cr transport system to be re-examined

MYSORE: The leading secondary city that is acquiring India's first Intelligent Transport System (ITS) to keep bus passengers updated is looking to experiment with a mass transit system to help commuters.

But herein lies the hitch: The bus rapid transit system (BRTS) that chief minister B S Yeddyurappa announced for Mysore in the budget is not new to the city. The BRTS concept was evaluated some time ago, but could not find favour with the civic authorities and was shelved.

Now, the CM said the economic and technical feasibility of establishing BRTS will be examined, which essentially is dusting the old proposal. Along with twin cities Hubli-Dharwad, the city has been promised an investment of over Rs 500 crore to get it the BRTS, also known as surface metro system with dedicated road corridors to operate buses.

Projected to be efficient and a good mass public transport system, the BRTS was sought to be implemented with funding from JNNURM. This came as an answer to rail-based metro proposed by MUDA found to be non-feasible for the tier-II city, given the huge investment. The government put on task the Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES) to do a feasibility study, which identified four corridors suitable along the Outer Ring Road to operate the BRTS to begin with. But it was dropped after groundwork after questions were raised about traffic on the dedicated corridors.

However, the heartening news is that Dasara has got Rs 10 crore allocation, relieving the official machinery, given that the amount of money available for the celebration is known well in advance thus helping them plan ahead. "Now, we can plan better, especially on inviting artistes, since we know the state funding," an official pointed out.

If you feel your own vehicle is better than public transport system, it is high time you changed your opinion and opted for a public transport, at least on some occasions.



Having seen ‘Bus Day’, launched by Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) previous year being a success in the garden city, Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has extended the ‘day’ to the cultural capital, on April 8.

A first of its kind initiative, it aims at bringing two-wheeler, three-wheeler and four-wheeler users under the ambit of public transport, gradually decongesting the roads off burgeoning traffic day by day, said KSRTC Managing Director Gaurav Gupta.

Chairing an interaction organised to elicit opinions about finding many buyers to the concept, the officer said buses will be operated to four different locations on the day from central bus stand (CBS) to L and T (route numbers 116 and 117), J P Nagar (11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18, 20 and 44), KRS (100 and 104) and Kuvempunagar (53, 61, 63, 71, 82, 84 and 85).

Saying that the ‘day’ will not be restricted to April alone, the officer said it would be conducted once in a month only to exhort the people, especially youths, to board the buses that could help save fuel and make this mode of travel most cost efficient for them.

In a power point presentation, the officer said one bus can be equal to 40 cars, explaining the magnanimity of the grave situation on road.

Tabling their suggestions, Suma Dinesh, an activist urged the organisers to give wide publicity through various medium of communication.

While honorary secretary of NIE-Technology, Koorgalli M Sreepada Rao announced to send student volunteers to take the programme forward. A representative from Infosys Technologies, Hootagalli, said he would lead his team members to travel in buses.

Mysore: In a bid to make the public transport system popular among citizens, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) plans to organise “Bus Day” in the city on April 9.

The frequency of bus trips to four select locations from the city bus-stand will be increased on that day to assess the route potential. KSRTC Divisional Controller (Urban) M.N. Srinivas told The Hindu on Friday that buses to all these four destinations originate from the city bus-stand and it would touch L&T via Infosys, KRS, J.P. Nagar and Kuvempunagar. A bus would be run in every five minutes to these areas to assess the real potential of the areas in terms of people using the bus. The same experiment would be repeated in succeeding months on select routes, he said.

The KSRTC move is expected to benefit the commuters in many ways. Firstly, it would dissuade people to use less two wheelers, autorickshaws and cars. Secondly, road accidents involving two-wheelers could easily be avoided, Mr. Srinivas pointed out. It is also expected to bring down pollution levels as there will be few private vehicles on the road.

The KSRTC wants to drive home the fact that travelling in public transport is not only safer but also cheaper, Mr. Srinivas said.

Though the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation has been organising “Bus Days” for the past one year, it is being tried out in Mysore for the first time. The Mercedes-Benz bus service introduced as city service on an experimental basis has received good response,

Mr. Srinivas said. The bus is plying from the city bus stand to L&T via Infosys. Ticket is priced at Rs. 20. Transport Minister R. Ashok will inaugurate a new bus-stand at Kuvempunagar on April 9.

The next day, Mr. Ashok would inaugurate a new bus stand at Yelwal.

BUS DAY' IN CITY ON APR. 9: MGP'S SUGGESTIONS

The 'Bus Day,' earlier scheduled to be held in city on Apr. 8 by the KSRTC Mysore Urban Division, will now be held on Apr. 9, according to M.N. Srinivas, KSRTC Divisional Controller.

As the Bus Day is being celebrated for the first time in city after the success of the Bus Day concept in Bangalore, KSRTC Managing Director Gaurav Gupta had convened a meeting of officials, NGOs and concerned citizens at the Deputy Commissioner's Office in Mysore on Mar. 22.

Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP) member Vasanthkumar Mysoremath, who also took part in the deliberations, has given the following suggestions to make the Bus Day a success:

1. Condition of roads in Mysore City: Good roads help in a safe commuting experience. Bad roads lead to stress for drivers and tragic accidents have taken place in Mysore city due to roads being riddled with deep potholes. Vehicles will have to be slowed down and frequent shifting of gears results in consumption of extra fuel, carbon emission, climate change, environmental pollution, thus resulting in avoidable misuse of highly subsidised fuel supply.

There is an urgent need for asphalting the roads by authori-ties concerned so that public transport can be speeded up and become attractive for people to shift from other modes of private transport to public transport.

2. Volvo buses are uneconomical: It is reported that KS-RTC has incurred a cumulative loss of more than Rs. 27 crore in running Volvos and other hi-end air-conditioned buses. Volvo buses need smooth and velvety roads in order to get the best from their class of vehicles. Mysore's potholed roads are weakening the very structure/body of such hi-tech buses and their mileage/cost of running per km (2-3 kms per litre of fuel) is dismal.

Frequent substituion of dama-ged parts by Volvo are costing a fortune for KSRTC and it is bound by Annual Maintenance Contract agreement from the Volvo technicians and KSRTC mechanics are forbidden from touching these vehicles. Most of all, even with highly reduced fares (subsi-dised?), Volvos are not running to their full capacity.

3. Need for more decent ordinary buses: The need of the hour is clean, decent and fast moving ordinary buses for catering to the majority of commuters to help them reach their destinations. Time for introspection for KSRTC; Preference must be given to procure more number of ordinary buses and purchase of exorbitantly costly Volvos, Marcopolos and Mercedes Benz buses may be reconsidered and either deferred or cancelled until a congenial commuting environment is created.

At present, there is a highly stratified system of making avail-able proper transport system between urban and mofussil commuters. City Bus Stand has been remodelled at considerable cost whereas the neighboring mofussil bus stand is in shambles and buses running to such destinations are invariably worn out ones that are not properly maintained with hygiene. This needs to be corrected immediately and a sense that all commuters are equal must be imbibed.

4. JnNURM Funds and Mega Structures: In the name of creating infrastructure and for utilising sizeable JNNURM funds, mega concrete structures are being constructed in the form of TTMCs in different corners of Mysore City; their grotesque designs not keeping with the architectural and heritage values of Mysore. Buses do not run on storeyed buildings, they have to run on well-laid roads catering to the basic need of commuting.

Moreover, people use bus stations as transit points and they have no time for shopping or for hanging out. They need frequent fast moving transport system.

Therefore, it is necessary to give importance for creating good sheltered, clean and neat bus stations with minimum needs of decent seating arrangement, clean toilets and drinking water facility. This should be the priority of city service since it is wedded to the cause of social responsibility of providing decent commu-ting experience to the masses. This will infuse confidence in the minds of people and they will get attracted towards public transport.

5. Facilities in buses: Disabled-friendly infrastructure at bus stations, first-aid kits in buses (at present majority of the buses do not have first-aid kits even though rules prescribe providing the same in all buses), fire fighting facility, drinking water facility in buses are some of the needs of the commuters.

6. KSRTC has to develop long term perspective plans: It is reliably predicted that with business as usual, fossil fuel crude oil will be in short supply in about 20 years. This is bound to create a huge gap between demand and supply for petroleum products like diesel, petrol and kerosene. Fuel in future will cost a fortune and not all people will be able to afford the exorbitant cost for running their private vehicles. Thus they will be looking up to public transport system for their commuting needs.

There is bound to be a slump in two-wheel / four-wheel industry due to less demand. This is where KSRTC has to step in and cater to the huge demand. For this, it will be necessary to create a congenial environment for public transport from now itself.

7. Behaviour of crew: Even though KSRTC is organising periodical trainings in different aspects of behavioural science, many of them behave in a rough and tough manner with commu-ters. Many drivers, particularly in mofussil buses, smoke or keep chewing ghutka or paan, spitting and / or talking on mobile phones while driving with one hand. This is unbecoming of public servants. Periodical checking and taking corrective measures will instill confidence in minds of public.

Many conductors do not carry enough coins of different deno-minations. They cleverly do not hand over the change while issuing tickets, stay inside the bus and signal to driver to move, even while commuters would have alighted and waiting for the change; in some cases, he adds up a few of commuters' change, hands over a currency note to distribute among themselves.

Some conductors shout at the commuters when a hapless commuter hands out a higher deno-mination currency note. These things have to be set right so that people will be happy to see a crew who are courteous.

Another rude behaviour is when ladies or senior citizens complain about able-bodied people occupying seats reserved for them, the conductor never responds and shouts back at them to keep quiet since he cannot make those unauthorised occupants vacate the seats. When he is an official, he has every right to uphold the law and it is his business to come to the rescue of those helpless souls.

In some neighboring States, even though ladies seats are vacant, men do not occupy them. This problem needs rectification through proper checks.

8. Non-stoppage of buses at Bus Stops/Shelters: Buses are not keeping their schedules either for want of crew or good buses. Cluttering of a number of buses on the same route are noticed; TCs may be phasing out the trips but drivers either drive speedily and overtake other buses without stopping their buses at the bus stops or by stopping them far away. Some buses skip the bus stops.

For example, Andolana news-paper has constructed a bus stop on Ramanuja Road and except for a few city buses, other mofussil buses do not stop even tho-ugh many villagers wait after taking treatment etc. from JSS Hos-pital. Drivers do not pick up commuters even though they hold up their hand as a request. Such behaviours need correction.

If the above suggestions are considered and adopted, people will be happy to find their public transport attractive and may make every day a Bus Day.

Arrange interactive sessions with all citizens / employees of Mysore (First 10 session details to be coordinated by Ravi-Devraj of CMC/MCTD team and share it with me for doing the presentation. All equipments and other logistics to be confirmed to me 48hrs prior the event / scheduled date/time.

Suggestions for next bus day : May 9th 2011:

• Routelist will be printed and pasted on the doors of all the buses plying on the 4 routes. (CMC/DME)
• Buses will be parked during exit timings in 2 and 4 wheelers parking in some institutions so that it will promote bus use by employees.
• Infosys announced that if any user uses the BUS regulary and specially on the 12 BUS DAYs, he/she will be given a special gift.
• THEME OF BUS DAY to be worked upon.
• Best banner for the 12 months will receive a gift from KSRTC. The website will carry these banners.
• MAKE A IDEA FACTORY FOR PUBLIC.
• Have “9th April of every month is Busday” printed on all tickets issued and also have the same painted in buses where “welcome” / Thank you” is painted.
• Please reduce volvos / Marcopolos and help common citizens.

The next visit to Mysore for all preparations will be on 8th Night by myself.
The meeting ended with some light snacks organized by Mr.Srinivas for every member. I thank everyone for having spared sometime and attended this meeting. I look forward to meet you all on 9th and also request you to pl call me for any doubts to co-ordinate with MCTD team from 5th April onwards.

Poor bus service irks commuters

MYSORE: The city is growing fast in the state next only to Bangalore. The growth has led to increased demand for public transport, which the state-owned transport wing has failed to keep pace with.

Despite funds flowing in to improve infrastructure, many localities, particularly where people largely depend on public transport, still lack bus services. But the authorities concerned maintain that there are no complaints about lack of service in Mysore except in a few localities owing to technical glitches -- narrow stretch and inadequate passenger traffic.

Sample this: Mumtaz Begaum (48), an Arabic teacher from Kantharaja Park area walks miles together everyday to work. Reason: there is no bus service from her place. She teaches Arabic language to youths at their homes in N R Mohalla, Kesare and Naidu Nagar respectively. As she cannot afford to travel in auto, she goes on foot. Earlier, authorities were providing service till Pulakeshi Road, which was near to her residence but it was discontinued some three years ago, putting people like her in difficulty.

Corporator Rihana Banu said everything was okay till KSRTC authorities stopped plying buses on Pulakesh Road, which connects several areas like B B Keri, Lashkar Mohalla, II Idgah, Agasara Keri, Kumbara Keri, Tilak Nagar and parts of Mandi Mohalla. Soon after, people in the region started to feel the pinch. They are now forced to shell out more for transportation. People are seen travelling in jam-packed autos by sharing expenses, she claims.

Earlier two buses (Nos 168 and 173) were running on the stretch but service was withdrawn citing lack of passengers. In fact, the buses were not coming on time. The corporator said that if authorities provide adequate bus service to their locality definitely people will be ready to use the service.

Even several parts in north-east of Mysore lack adequate bus service. People, particularly unorganized working groups, are seen commuting in three- or four-wheelers to reach homes in the evenings. Similarly, people also face difficulty in commuting from railway station to their localities due to lack of direct bus services.

KSRTC assistant traffic manager D Ananda Krishna claimed presently there are no complaints about lack of service or demand for more busses in the city. This indicates bus service is good. When the TOI drew his attention to the lack of bus service in parts of Mysore, the officials justified that it could be due to narrowness of the roads or thin passenger traffic.
