McKinsey & Company Global Managing Director: Armenia should become the beacon of development in the region

World Bank Finds Little Change In Armenian Business Environment

Armenia’s business environment still leaves much to be desired despite being more favorable than in most countries of the world, the World Bank said in an annual survey released on Thursday.

The bank’s “Doing Business 2011” survey rates 183 economies on nine aspects of government regulation of domestic firms, including investor protection and the ease of starting and closing businesses and registering property.

Armenia is 48th in the rankings topped by Singapore, down from 43rd place in occupied last year. By comparison, neighboring Georgia and Azerbaijan, ranked 12th and 54th respectively.

The report found an improvement in only one research category: Trading across borders. “Armenia made trading across borders easier by introducing self-declaration desks at customs houses and warehouses, improving border operations through investments in new equipment, and introducing a risk management system,” it said.

In all other categories, the country’s ratings have slightly worsened over the past year. Tax administration remains the Achilles heel of the Armenian business environment. According to the World Bank, only 14 other nations have more cumbersome and complicated tax procedures.

The authors of its survey argued that Armenian businesses have to pay various taxes as many as 50 times a year and spend an average of 581 hours on that, much more than companies in developed Western countries. Still, the country’s combined tax rate of about 41 percent is slightly below the Western average.

Armenia continued to score poorly on investor protection and the issuance of government permits for construction. But it again received much higher marks in the business and property registration categories.

The survey said it takes 15 days to start up a business there. The average business registration period in the developed world is about 14 days. Also, Armenia ranked 5th in the world in terms of the simplicity of legal procedures for registering property.

In a separate statement, the World Bank stressed that its survey does not assess all aspects of business regulation around the world. “For example, it does not measure security, macroeconomic stability, corruption, skill level, or the strength of financial systems,” it said.

Nor does it gauge the extent of fair business competition in a particular economy. A lack of such competition in Armenia, resulting in the effective monopolization of some lucrative forms of business, is a major source of complaints from local entrepreneurs. That is also widely seen as a serious hurdle to the country’s economic development.

The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund have long been pressing the Armenian authorities to improve the investment climate and tackle government corruption. A high-level IMF mission called for “bolder and deeper reforms” in that area following a September visit to Yerevan.

Armenia is the first Christian nation on Earth
In 301, Armenia became the first country in the world to adopt Christianity as its official state religion. We're very proud to be the world's first Christian nation and if you ever go to Armenia you will be constantly reminded of that until your ears bleed. LOL

"One of the most crucial events in Armenian history was the conversion of Armenia to Christianity!
By adopting the new religion in the fourth century, Armenia renounced its Eastern or Persian-influenced past, established a distinct Christian character of its own, and, at times, became identified with the Western world. Armenian national tradition is rich in information and in legends about the introduction of Christianity into the country. It is often said to have been preached by the Holy Apostles, or the immediate disciples of the Apostles, notably St. Thaddeus and St. Bartholomew. However, these accounts are relatively late, and not generally regarded as historically authentic.

The traditional account of the conversion is based on a mixture of fact and fiction recorded a century later by the Armenian chronicler known as "Agathangelos". It tells of wars of an Armenian king Khosrov against the new Persian Sasanid dynasty and the efforts of Persia to destroy the Armenian Arshakunis. The Persian king employed a traitor named "Anak" ( in fact, Khosrov’s brother) to murder the Armenian king. Promised a reward by the Sasanids, Anak settled in Armenia, befriended Khosrov, and murdered him and most of his family.

Anak and his family were, in turn, slain by angry Armenian courtiers. Only two sons were saved from death: Khosrov’s son "Trdat", who was taken to Rome, and Anak’s son "Gregory", ( the future St. Gregory the Illuminator), who was taken to live among Christians in Cappadocia.

Years later, according to Agathangelos, Trdat, with the help of Rome, returned to Armenia to regain his father’s throne. While passing through Caesarea he met the son of Anak, who had been given the name of Gregory by his Christian mentors and, unaware of his true identity, took him into his service.

After regaining Armenia, Trdat, recognizing great abilities in Gregory, raised him in stature at court. Gregory, of course, had already accepted the Christian faith and eschewed pagan ceremonies. Soon rumors of his parentage began to surface, spread by jealous nobles, which lead to his torture and imprisonment in Khorvirab (deep pit).

Years passed and King Trdat, like his godfather Diocletian, continued his persecution of Christians. Among the martyrs of that period were "Gayane" and" Hripsime" , two virgins who had refused King Trdat’s advances and were put to death.

According to Agathangelos, after this crime, King Trdat was punished for his sin by divine retribution by turning into a wild beast. He was afflicted, it seems, with a form of violent lycanthropy(a form of mental disorder in which the patient imagines himself to be a wolf). No one could cure him of this transformation until his sister, Khosrovidukht, had a dream in which an angel instructed her to release Gregory who, despite long years in isolation, had, by divine intervention, survived in the pit. The princess was convinced that if Gregory was brought forth from his pit, he would cure the king of his dire affliction. King Trdat accepted his sister’s advice and released the saint from the deep pit. Gregory restored the king’s health and sanity, and then baptized him with all his household. Thus, the King, in 301 A.D., proclaimed Christianity the sole state religion, making Armenia the First Christian Nation on Earth.."

Private Messages are private, as for the issues here I've reversed robo_boss brigging since the infraction was made in this forum (which I moderate).

As for posting sensitive territorial news please avoid them in the future, It's my sincere request...thanks

As for territorial disputes, my own country (Japan) is in many of them with our neighbors but I just ignore all those threads, they have a right to talk about it if they want. It doesn't really matter it's just a forum. As long as they don't break any clear forum rules I don't really care.

Let's all get along please

Some famous ethnic Armenians:

Charles Aznavour, a famouse French-Armenian singer, songwriter, actor, and the Ambassador of Armenia to Switzerland.

Cher, an American singer and actress.

Kim Kardashian , is an American celebutante, socialite, actress, and model. Stars in a reality show "Keeping up with the Kardashians". She became particularly famous after her nude pictures in Playboy magazine and a home sex video with her boyfriend, singer Ray J, which later was leaked onto internet (oh Kim, you make us so proud LOL).

Kim with her sisters, Khloe and Kortney, the stars of reality show Keeping up with the Kardashians.

Garry Kasparov, a former world chess champion, some consider him the greatest chess player in history. These days he's a Russian political activist.

Serj Tankian, singer, composer, the lead singer of the rock band System of a down, that's been on hiatus since 2007.

And the legendary System of a down itself, all members are ethnic Armenians. I hope they get back together.
