Now some from the Glasgow Mela! Held every summer as part of the wider programme of events at the West End Festival, the Mela, in Kelvingrove Park, is a multi-cultural celebration of food, music and performance. There's also a huge parade, but I missed that this year. D:

And while I was in the area I took time to get some photos of the residential streets around Hillhead and Dowanhill, if only because they are fantastically successful examples of residential streetscapes, and is probably the best place in Glasgow to live. (if you can afford it!)

The huge amount of greenery on the streets softens and compliments the warm stone buildings...

A strange window i caught out the corner of my eye.

My favourite tenement in the city... the colour, detail and proportions just seem so perfect.

A hidden oasis ("Private! Residents only!")

Music was coming from one of the houses... probably some privelidged kid practicing the flute.

Note the colour of the dark house on the left. Before extensive stone cleaning programs in the 80s and 90s, all of the old stone buildings in Glasgow were this colour... darkened over the years by industrial soot. This houses neighbours have returned to their honey-blonde glory but for some reason it slipped through to remain a reminder of the past.

A lot of cars on the narrow roads here, but off-street parking is rare.

Turning a corner into Ruthven Lane... a ramshackle collection of old workshops, stables and sheds which are now home to independent shops and businesses. There was a plan not long ago to demolish these for replacement with a purpose built shop row, but it hasn't materialised. Probably for the best as I imagine the small businesses here couldn't afford the high overhead cost of a new building.

Through the portal...

...and back to reality!

Interesting pictures! I like Glasgow. In some ways it reminds me of Liverpool, in other ways, Manchester.

It is not just 'privileged kids' that play the flute though!

Here in Liverpool, The 'Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra' gives lessons to children in the underprivileged area of Everton - where they have their practice rooms.

Thanks Jane! I agree, as cities that 'grew up' around the same time, they seem like sisters to each other.

It was a remark about the area, rather than the instrument.

Quite so. I play the flute, in fact.

But very nice pictures, especially the ones of the Mela. I'd have gone to that, if I hadn't been up in Aboyne this weekend (which, as mentioned above, is a rare example of an attractive Scottish village to compare with the best in England).
