I have just, out of interest, popped over and had a look at the Development Summary on the Newcastle Forum.

It is an excellent thread and structure and is, as far as I can tell, always maintained up to date with every change by the one forum member who runs it.

All changes are spotted by him, or notified to him by members via their Skybar (there is a message on the Development Summary thread asking members not to post changes on that thread but to post them on Skybar).

Have a look at their thread, one like that would look great (even better!) on here.

Yes it would, it needs someone with an eye and ear to the ground and the time to keep it up to date

...on second thoughts, as no-one seems up for it I'll let it go. If anyone fancies it in future let me know by pm please, and I'll resurrect it.

Is anyone wanting to take this on?

It can be really very good and very useful, as in the example above. I'm sure that thread-owner will help and advise us if needed.

I'm sure we can do it at least as well!

I have various commitments, that rule me out, --so I couldn't take this on.

I think it's a nice idea, but quite unnecessary at present when one considers the amount of actual development work happening in Sunderland at present. I think such summary forums are more useful on the large subforums like Sheffield and Liverpool where there are a large amount of projects ongoing thus where such an index makes navigation much easier.

On the broader point of merging and combining short or obselete threads, I think this is a very useful idea for the Sunderland subforum along the lines that were suggested elsewhere. (I'll find the post if I can and re-post it here.)

I am conscious that I am a relative 'newbie' on this forum, but I have got involved in arranging something very similar to this on another forum (not Skyscraper City) so I know what any mod would want and need from us, in terms of detail, to make it happen.

As I say, don't mean to get above myself on here!

Well, I have spent some time on this, and using my own experience from elsewhere, and after studying other sub-forums on SSC, I have come up with the below.

PART 1, could be adopted as our guidelines for future use of our forum.

PARTS 2 to 6, could form the basis of a note (to ask for the changes to be made) to be sent to the mods.

I ACCEPT THAT PARTS (OR ALL) OF THIS MIGHT BE REJECTED BY THE MEMBERS. IF SO, THAT IS OK WITH ME!!

PROPOSALS FOR THE RE-ORGANISATION OF THE “SUNDERLAND & DURHAM SUB FORUM”
ON SKYSCRAPER CITY.

(1) Objectives.

To improve the ease of use of the sub forum by doing the following . .

(i) Removing rarely used and obsolete threads, that are slipping down the forum to become out of sight and obsolete.

(ii) Setting up an agreed set of ‘posting guidelines’ to prevent the re-currence of the setting up of multiple new threads, when really the posts could be included on pre-existing threads. These could be either on “subject” threads (such as a “Sunderland Pubs” thread) or on the sub-forum “skybar” for general chat/conversation type posts, that do not deserve their own thread and are not relevant to any existing “subject” thread.

(iii) To merge the posts from the mentioned ‘obsolete’ threads into their appropriate subject thread or Skybar.

(iv) To delete the residual empty threads, after (iii) above.

(v) To merge duplicate threads, where found (eg, there are three threads about the Adelaide ship).

(vi) To amend the titles of some threads to
A – Conform with normal Skyscraper City guidelines.
B - Remove confusion by adding ‘clear explanation’ to titles.

(viii) To set up (where not already in place) some “subject threads” to help absorb the obsolete and/or unused/short threads, mentioned in (i) above. Example “subject threads” would be . .
Sunderland & Durham area – Pubs
Sunderland & Durham area – Retail
Sunderland & Durham area – Restaurants
etc . .

(ix) To accumulate all “Projects” into a “Development Summary” thread, that is maintained by a nominated individual.

(x) Related to (ix) above, to amend all “Project Threads” to adhere to the agreed Skyscraper City standard format, eg . .
SAFC Training Facility | South Tyneside | 1fl | Submitted
Porterfield Plaza | Sunderland | 5fl | U/C
etc . . .

(2) Thread Titles to change . .

in order to .
(a) Conform with SSC Guidelines (standard format) and/or
(b) Remove ambiguity and to clarify content of thread.
(c) Clarify use of “subject” threads (eg, “Sunderland & Durham area – Pubs”)

(5) Duplicated threads, to merge into eachother . .

(i) The following three threads could be merged into a thread called . .

Sunderland and the ‘City of Adelaide’ ship

1 - Riverside | City of Adelaide ship
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=981504
2 - Adelaide coverage in Scots Parliament
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1000195
3 - Inside Out
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1073251

NB, Thread one would need a 'Name Change' (to as suggested above) and the other two then be merged into it.

(ii) The following three threads could be merged into the newly re-named “subject thread” called . .

Local Music in Sunderland Area

1 - Local Music
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1030335
2 - Campus Music Venue to re-open
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1055947
3 - Sunderland – Music Scene
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1033881

NB, Thread one would need a 'Name Change' (to as suggested above) and the other two then be merged into it.

(6) Developments (with their own ‘Project Threads’) that could be listed on a “Development Summary” thread . . . following all of the above changes in Part 2 to 5) :

Someone will need to volunteer to set up and maintain the 'Development Summary' thread . . BUT we do have enough projects to justify having a summary thread. It would look good, and be useful too!

NB - There are TWELVE genuine “Project Threads” for inclusion, as at 20th March 2010 (using the 'newly re-named' thread titles where appropriate) see below . . .

New Wear Bridge | Wessington Way, Sunderland | 190m/140m | Submitted

Porterfield Plaza | Sunderland | 5fl | U/C

Durham Gate | Thinford, Co Durham | Various | Proposed

Spirit of Sunderland | Sunderland | 33fl | 328ft | Proposed

Central Area Multi-storey Car Park | Sunderland | ?fl | Demolition

Durham University new Admin Building | Durham City | ?fl | Proposed

OK then guys!

Thats it for now!!

I think that any other changes needed (if any) would soon become much clearer to see, in the 'new/revamped/slimmer' forum, after (if) the above initial changes are carried out!

Hope you like some of the above, let me know!!

Regards.

Wow - I'm astonished you've taken so much time and effort to compile your ideas and present them to us in this way; thank you.

I agree with about 95 per cent of what you've proposed, and would be happy to see all of it implemented.

Thanks for the above.

I have written to a moderator to see if the changes can be carried out.

I have started the new Development Summary thread and have unashamedly based it on a good format for a Development Summary that I found on a neighbouring Forum.

It still needs a lot of populating, with photos and other details from each Project Thread, which I hope to do today.

I will then ask the moderator to make it into a Sticky Thread, at the top of our Forum.

I may find that I need some more details from people on here, for the Development Summary (in addition to what is on the threads, perhaps) so I will ask for those here on Skybar, if needed.

I am definitley not a 'fount of all knowledge' about all these Projects!!

Please let me know of any changes needed.

What are these projects, does anyone know?

I have just found found the above post from 'woodhousen', made a few months ago on the SUNDERLAND | Full Summary of Projects thread! I knew that thread was still there, but I didn't realise (till now) that we were still using it.

I thought that when we got the sub-forum, we set up individual Project Threads for each project, and no longer had any need to use the old thread (which was ALL we used to have) from prior to the sub-forum?

So, i am now wondering, were all live projects set up with their own thread, with all information passed across from the old 'Full Summary' thread, when we got the new sub-forum?

If not, there might well be other projects I need to find out about (on this old thread) to put onto the "Development Summary", do you think?

ok guys I'll get started on this lot but please dont use the skybar to discuss forum structure.

I have set up this thread > http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=980760 < specifically for that purpose.

I will always look in that thread before I look anywhere else, and if your requests are elsewhere I'm almost certainly not going to spot them in a hurry.

Many thanks for your help

Ok folks I've done most of these.

I'm not convinced about some of the 'smaller' threads merging into the skybar. I've done the ones that had 2 or 3 odd posts, but I'm not merging threads that have more than 1 page or especially 100 + posts into Skybar. The continuity will be totally lost, and the ones i've look at have their own specific banter, so they are staying as they are.

Regarding the subject threads rationalisation I feel similarly... do you really want to lose all your continuity for each one of these... some of them are many pages long and a rationalised thread will make no sense to man nor beast... whats more you are most likely going to end up with a sterile forum. I'll let you guys think about it, but some of this is far too clinical to keep a forum lively.

Regarding the Developments Thread... it's only a few days since you guys asked me to delete the one I made for you, but thanks to the great work of NE4E you have a really good one, so thanks for that... and yes I'll sticky it of course.

And by the way... this little lot is going into the thread it should have gone in the first place

Well done --NE4E --you have done a good job mate, ---and with regards to the Projects you asked about, ---I believe they are part of Gentoo's Regeneration Programme for some of Sunderlands Estates, cheers.

Thanks b4mmy, for doing the changes that you have done for us. It is much appreciated and is the start of implementing the things many of us feel are needed to make this into a lively and easy to use forum, where topics that we wish to discuss are easy to find and do not disappear off down the bottom of the forum in short, unloved. threads!!

(1) MERGING OF THREADS INTO OUR SKYBAR.

Thanks for merging some threads into Skybar, but can we perhaps discuss again, some of those still left

The aim here was to remove from our forum the genuine "skybar-type" threads, simply containing chat about off-topic type subjects. On the Skybar is where we would have discussed them, had one existed and been known about as a sticky, at the time. These threads are mostly off-topic, or just social chat and not about the subject (Sunderland Urban Projects etc) that Skyscraper City is about. Hence, the idea of merging them onto skybar.

If they are left on the forum, usually unused near the bottom, it is very likely that other similar threads would have started, rather than using our new 'sticky' skybar! They were/are bad examples, if you like.

So, I tend to agree that where the individual threads (proposed for merger into skybar) have become quite long ('bad examples' or not!) we may as well keep them.)

However, can we then still merge the below five smaller ones, where 'losing continuity' (the point you make) is not too relevant?

Ashbrooke Sports Club
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1060413
(a genuine bit of skybar-type social chit-chat)

Villa pop
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1013793
(a genuine bit of skybar-type social chit-chat)

Opposite the Winter Gardens
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1001157
(about a building, but skybar-type social chat, really)

Farmers market
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1071455
(Again, really just a bit of skybar-type social conversation)

Boylesports
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1054529
(a genuine bit of skybar-type social chit-chat)

So, we would just keep as individual threads the'longer ones' (amongst those originally suggested) as follows . .

Google Street View

ALREADY MERGED WITH (THANKS) THE BELOW
Google Street View – Sunderland is now available

(2) MERGERS ONTO "SUBJECT" THREADS (EG, "Sunderland & Durham - Pubs")

These I see as a 'totally different kettle of fish', to the mergers onto Skybar.

This was proposed so that we could have a lively and current debate about (to use "Pubs" as an example) about all the various places in question, where the thread would always be at or near, the TOP of the Forum!

At the moment, many of the 'individual pub' threads are unused and out-of-sight, whereas in a "Sunderland & Durham - Pubs" thread, that would never be the case.

Also, any information about a particular pub (people would know) would always be on that one thread!

If we set up a 'pubs thread', but then leave all these old individual threads on the forum, then people would have no incentive to use the 'subject' thread, and indeed (the 'bad example' thing again) would be tempted to set up loads more new threads instead.

Any 'loss of continuity' would be only a one-off situation, at merger, and that would often be how it is anyway, on a multi-topic thread, with more than one thing at once being discussed.

But, it would always (I'm sure) be a lively debate, at "the top" of the Forum!!

The same principle applies to all the proposed subject threads. As an example, the dormant thread on 'Metro extension from Sunderland to Seaham', would surely be far better off merged into the "live" main 'Sunderland Metro & transport' thread??

So, unless others disagree, can I suggest that we look at going ahead with the setting up of the 'subject threads', along the lines in the earlier note?

FINALLY

Once again, b4mmy, many thanks for all that you are doing for us on this forum.

(PS - I have just seen that your original 'Development Summary' thread (empty) is at the bottom of the forum. Sorry, I did not see it there, and I obviously should have used it. Can it now be merged?)

I'll leave this to be discussed for a few day folks... I have to admit I'm not keen on doing these mergers just to tidy things up... but if there are enough people who want it then fine. I'd also like to hear from the people who created those threads as it would be rude not to ask them, having made the effort to do so in the first place. Not against the idea... just want to be sure that everyone is happy with the proposal.
