Design e arquitectura: Herdade do Rocim

In October I visited the Herdade do Rocim because it combines two things I really enjoy: good architecture and good wine

Located nearby Cuba (Alentejo) the winery demonstrates an outstanding concept of portuguese architect Carlos Vitorino ...

Come have an excursion with me ....

Just in case someone don´t know: O Prof is taking about Álvaro Siza who lately won a prize in Britain for his work at the Adega Mayor (also Alentejo).

As far as I understood the lady who escorted me on the tour through the adega, it was initialized by the company which runs the winery ...

You find more informations about the project, explained by Carlos Vitorino himself and furthermore at this reportage at "A Hora de Baco" on RTP.

Me personally adore the idea of using "gabiões" as kind of "fachada frontal". A stunning idea ...

Cumps,

I don't drink wine, but that building is so prettyyyyy!!, it seems a part of the mount!, I love its building materials!!! Sometimes building are valued for the design of its facade instead of innovation in the design of its structure. This is a great example where building materials were chosen so it could become a part of the landscape and with a functional aim: it is a thermal insulation. Moreover you can see how the interior of building has been designed with a obvious objective, specifically to build a winerey:

I totally agree with you, Napolit. Thanks for pointing out the insulation effect. Didn´t thought about it! But there are even further interesting aspects ...

I think the keyword is "transparency". It is not just the function of the buiding (to produce wine) on it´s own, it´s the concept of sharing the whole process of winemaking with the interested visitor. To attain that goal the architect uses a lot of glass and built the complex around that "Patio" in the center. Due to this "trick" almost all single parts of the winery are very light-flooded (eventhough the building is "cave-like" embedded in the landscape) and all steps (fermentation, botteling, storage e.g..) become "observable" for visitors ...

A brilliant idea is the "Look-through"-effect of the main entrance. Because this part of the builing is on a little higher level than the part in the back, the sky is viewable through the heavy "gabiões"-facade ...

... which also add that touch of "transparency" to the building.

A tremendous work!

Wowwwww, it is true!!! I hadn't noticed that detail, it is really impressive! What does a special place are these simple things which are unnoticed by the majority of people. As I love buildings which I can discover new things each time I look at them, in future I will value more this building . I hope to visit some day this place
