Can you resist to this town's charm?

Talsi is a small, historical town in Latvia with a population of about 11 000. It is located on several hills and between 2 small lakes. The architecture itself is maybe not too ornate or special but together with the beautiful landscape it makes the town very charming.

Talsi is interesting with it's layout. Town's historical centre is topographically divided in 3 parts - two of them on a hill, and one - on the valley between these hills. Here you see the lower part and one of the upper parts, with the main symbol of the town - Talsi Lutheran church.

Coming from bus station side, here we are approaching the place which could be considered as the town's central plaza. I will relatively call it as "centre #1" here (it's the part on hill).

Going down the hill, looking back

We have reached the "valley" - let it be the "centre #2".

One of the most desirable places where to live in this town is in the houses up on this hill. There opens great views over the town.

We'll climb up and check the views from there...

Well, wouldn't you want to see something like this from your kitchen's window?

Valley and the third historical part (again up on hill) - let's name it "centre #3".

Here it's one of 2 lakes of Talsi. Interesting how the surrounding landscape "embraces" the town in this place - there are no disturbing private housing suburbs or commieblocks, you see already countryside from the centre of the town!

Down the hill, going around the lake

Talsi castle-mound is our next target...

Classical cliche view of Talsi (taken from that castle-mound) - should return there when everything is green. In this pic is visible how the front of white clouds are coming, "eating up" the blue sky gradually.

Now some shots from the valley between 2 uphill historical parts.

Now it's time to climb up again - to see the church and 3rd part of historical Talsi.

A look back to that street...

The church

If you are wondering looking at the pictures where are all the people then take in mind this was one of the national holidays (we celebrate Restoration day of Independence on 4th May, the pictures are from day before). Of course, town was not THAT empty as pictures shows (almost like in that fantastic movie "Langoliers" ), but I just try to avoid people in photos. And I very like this view exactly because of the magical emptyness there...

Although Talsi region is the most Latvian region in Latvia (the percentage of Latvians is 92% there) it is also one of the major historical centres of Gypsies in Latvia. I couldn't find data how many percents of Talsi population are Gypsies. As many other Latvia's inhabitants, also many Talsi Gypsies have went away from the country to work in UK, Ireland, etc (at least, that's what the media tells). However, I saw quite many of them while was in town - and mostly exactly in this, "centre#3" part of the town.

Baron's residence from 19th Century, now it's town's museum (and also, as it seemed, almost only one dining place which was open in the town that day ). There is a nice park around this mini-palace (with many foreign species of flora), but as the nature weren't green yet, there wasn't much sense to take photos.

While we took the meal in that place, that white overcasted front reached the town. So, no sunny pics anymore... We are going down from the "centre#3" through the valley back to "centre#1".

Here our way leads up to the hill once more..

Houses at central plaza

As always - modern architecture in the small towns in Latvia is mostly supermarkets. Here Lithuanian retailer Maxima has built enormous monster which is even unproportionally large for such a town as Talsi, imo. But as it looks comparatively OK and is located in the Soviet part of the town, I have nothing against this glassy box.

Lovely small house with a cat between the commieblocks.
