What’s billed as the world’s largest slot machine will dispense people instead of cash in June when the Fremont Street Experience unveils SlotZilla, a towering launch pad for new permanent zip lines beneath Fremont’s LED canopy.

Ground will be broken after the New Year’s holiday on the 120-foot tower that will double capacity on the existing temporary zip-line attraction that will feature a first-of-its-kind “power launch” system to shoot riders at accelerated speeds.

Fremont Street officials gave details on the $11 million attraction at a media event today.

The 11-story slot machine will be built between Third Street and Casino Center where the existing temporary zip-line facility operated by Flightlinez Las Vegas has sold more than 1 million rides since it opened in October 2010.

The new attraction will have two tiers of four zip lines. The lower lines will extend 850 feet and hang 75 feet above the ground and riders in harnesses will fly in a seated position.

The top lines will be 112 feet high and the line will extend 1,700 feet to the front of the Golden Gate hotel-casino. On the top lines, riders will fly in “super-hero position,” lying flat in harnesses, and will be launched at speeds of 35 mph with a propulsion launch system.

The new attraction will also have a two-tiered pricing system. The lower-level zip line will cost $20 a ride while the longer “zoomline” ride will cost $30 a ride. A two-ride package with both rides will go for $40.

yea its hard to believe that the tallest hotel and second tallest building in all of Las Vegas has been sitting there empty and unfinished for the last several years. Icahn is pretty far along with the bankruptcy process but so far there haven't been any announcements about the future of the property. It will probably remain empty and uninhabited for quite some time. What a shame.

Carl Icahn owns the Fontainebleau and per his usual custom, he's either looking to unload it at a huge profit (VERY unlikely) or let it melt down so he can reap the tax benefits. His claims of one day restarting construction grow weaker by the month...

good point....I can't think of a structure of this scale or larger in the downtown of a major city that is sitting empty like this, other than the hotel in Pyongyang.

There might be some significant sized buildings in downtown Detroit that are abandoned, but not sure about this.

Meanwhile, over at SkyVue...

http://www.vegaschatter.com/story/20...See+Them..+Yet

But:

SkyVue: Things Are Happening, You Just Can't See Them.. Yet

Quote:
Stay tuned. That's essentially the message from the folks at SkyVue Super Wheel after we reported on a seemingly stalled construction site across from Mandalay Bay. There's not been activity in a while. But, SkyVue sees dormant where we see dead.

We are not the only ones who see what's happening at The Linq's High Roller observation wheel site and what doesn't seem to be happening at SkyVue. Things that would naturally make anyone go hmmmm. Representatives, though, say it's two different types of wheels and that's why things are progressing differently. Here's how they explain it:

Quote:
High Roller is a cable wheel, while SkyVue is a steel wheel. This is a major difference that results in a totally opposite approach to construction. The reason SkyVue will be a steel wheel is because it needs to have a major support system to host the 50,000-square-foot LED screens (largest in the world) that will be located on either side of the wheel. In addition to the view, the LED screens are a huge differentiator for SkyVue from any other wheel in existence.

Steel Wheel Construction: A standard steel wheel is constructed in multiple segments from the inside out. They start in the center and build almost like a steel spider web until they reach the outer edge of the wheel.

Cable Wheel Construction: They start with a center hub and attach cables to it. They have to build a structure to hold the cables to the outer rim.
[...]
So supposedly, specialty parts are being fabricated in Germany and elsewhere and will appear at the (deserted) site this spring for assembly. Riiiiiiiiiight....

UNLV plans to ask LVCVA, casinos for $125 million for stadium

Quote:
Posted: Jan. 10, 2013 | 6:08 p.m.

UNLV will ask the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority and Las Vegas' biggest casinos for about $125 million to help pay for a new domed football stadium on campus, Don Snyder, UNLV's pointman for the project, said Thursday.

In an interview at his campus office, Snyder said the request is appropriate because the casinos and tourism businesses will be the "biggest economic beneficiaries" of the 60,000-seat venue that UNLV is calling the "megaevent center." It's part of an overall campus redevelopment project that includes a student village with housing and retail that has been dubbed, "UNLV Now."

The Fountainbleu is to remain vacant and unfinished for a minimum of ten years.

The owner(s) have been gutting it and selling off everything that is of value - piping, conduit, doors, finishing, HVAC equipment, elevators - anything that can be salvaged - and they have already recouped MORE than the billion or so that they paid for it a few years ago and in fact have made a hefty nice profit!

The "bankruptcy" process was "completed" years ago - actually, there was no "bankruptcy" - the project was sold at a loss to Ichan after a complex "negotiation".

Unless Ichan has something up his sleve, since the building cost over a billion to build, and needed a billion to finish BEFORE THE GUTTING AND SLAVAGING BEGAN, it demolition of it is not out of the question, unless property values really really skyrocket again.

The building was so unnecessarily complicated in its construction and design (even had a large section of the concrete floor structure COLLAPSE taking a few floors with it during construction just before it was stopped), including the pool and planter waterproofing, that it would be a great redesign effort just to make the various sections work if "completed".

Thanks for the info TankLV. Never heard about the construction difficulties. I wonder if its too late to convert it to an office building. Would be nice to keep a true skyscraper on the Vegas skyline (not counting the Strat). A demolition of this place would be unreal.

First update

Federal Justice Tower 1-31-2013

This is the first update that i'll be starting to try to do weekly. This building is located near downtown and it's supposed to house the U.S. Attorney's Office and also share with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

yeah, in downtown LV.

Not a very high building, but certainly a nice addition to this side of the city.

CityCenter Wants Fast Decision On Harmon Structure

Quote:
To try to jump-start the stalled construction-defects litigation, CityCenter has asked the Nevada Supreme Court for a quick hearing and decision on a key lower court ruling that went against it.

Last year, Clark County District Judge Elizabeth Gonzalez decided that CityCenter, managed and half-owned by MGM Resorts International, could not use a sampling it had conducted to determine how much of the unfinished Harmon Hotel was marred by faulty workmanship. This would CityCenter to engage in more structural testing in order to claim monetary damages for the alleged full loss of the building.

In the brief filed with the Supreme Court on Wednesday, CityCenter raised the concern, as it has in the past, that the Harmon could collapse in a serious earthquake. This added an impetus to the court acting quickly, CityCenter wrote in court papers.

General contractor Perini Building Co. commissioned a study last year that said installing eight temporary pillars to shore up the Harmon at key spots would alleviated the earthquake threat. This job would take about two months to complete for an estimated $2 million.

Second update

Federal Justice Tower 2-7-2013

Sorry for the ugly picture, but i didn't have time to walk to the site nor to take a better one. Anyways, they've made progress, just like last week, workers continue assembling beams and columns that make up the primary structure of the building.

All pictures are mine.

A high-speed train would help Palmdale grow and benefit Las Vegas

Quote:
The city of Palmdale, Calif., recently hosted a diversity summit where Las Vegas business owners brainstormed strategies to win contracts for building XpressWest, the proposed high-speed train to Southern California.

XpressWest initially was slated to run only between Las Vegas and Victorville, Calif., but agreements reached last year extended it 50 miles west to Palmdale. Palmdale is part of the California High-Speed Rail line and is a key connection point for carrying people between Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

Palmdale Mayor James Ledford recently sat down with VEGAS INC to talk about what XpressWest means both to his city and to Las Vegas:
