OSLO | New Oslo Central Station

New Oslo Central Station
Oslo - Norway

Space Group has won the invited competition for the redesign of the Oslo Central Station organised by the developer ROM Eiendom. The ambition
of the 2.9 billion Nkr project is to make the station become one of the most modern public transport hubs in Europe. The Oslo Central Station
project is led by Space Group partner Gro Bonesmo. The 80,000 sq m design includes station facilities, hotel, shopping, offices, conference,
restaurants and an event space.

Oslo Central Station once was the gate to the city from East. The situation with two polarising stations in Oslo is now history and Space Group's
strategy is a natural and delayed architectural response to this. The strong East – West axis has outplayed its role - and is replaced by a North-
South axis, from the forest to the fjord - from the inner city to Bjĝrvika and the new Opera House. The new station axis neutralises the old
stigmatised division between East and West.

Oslo Central Station belongs to the whole city. The grand move, gathering the station functions in a clear linear structure with a strong
architectural identity makes it visible in the cityscape with recognisable announcement of entrances from North, South and West. Whereas today
all types of shopping, station functions and circulation compete for space and dissolve without the experience of architectural definition – the
ambition is now to liberate and strengthen each individual architectural element with its dedicated functions and give them all a clear connection
to the station axis.

Construction will start in 2013 with an estimated completion date of 2018-2023.

COMPANIES: Space Group (architect) | ROM Eiendom (developer) | Luxigon (visualizer) | Atkins (logistics)

The project are been divided into three new buildings, Fjordporten which will be a 95m/23fl tall hotel, Krystallen a bigger office/public building
and Stasjonsalléen with is a 230m long terminal with a design inspired from traditional built Norwegian railroad bridges. Here you will see a few
renderings published in 2010 showing the latest version of the planned new station.

This is the renderings from the original winning design. The project was won in 2008. Renderings have been visualized by Luxigon. The last rendering show the original planned
Krystallen, the building that have changed most since they won the competition. Krystallen was originally a 50m tall highrise, but was lowered to six floors.

Oslo Central Station / Space Group
http://www.archdaily.com/3864/oslo-c...on-spacegroup/

Norwegian architects Space Group won the competition for Oslo´s new Central Station. The project consists on demolishing a big part of the existing station, to build a 4 stories tall structure that will unify the station. It will include 2 floors for offices hanging over the station. Also, an adjacent U-shaped building will be occupied by the biggest conference hotel in Norway.

Currently, the Central Station receive 150,000 travellers every day, number expected to double in the next few years, rendering the current structure obsolete. Space Group´s project will be able to grow in stages. Construction will start on 2013, during 5 to 10 years. Quite a lot, but since the project will be done in stages it will be able to be in use during all the time.

Space Group Wins Competition for Oslo’s Central Train Station
http://www.bustler.net/index.php/v2/...e60551fba8431/

The excitement about the new Opera House has just started to wear off before Oslo is planning a new project. On June 13, the winner of the competition for designing the new central station was announced. There were four strong competitors, but finally it was the Norwegian architect firm, Space Group, which got the honour of giving its touch to the capital skyline.

The design from Space Group involves demolishing a big part of the existing station and expanding it to almost twice its size. The new station hall will be four floors tall, where the two top floors will host offices. A U-shaped building will be placed next to the station and the premises will consist of Norway’s biggest conference hotel. The team has also suggested a crystal shaped building, facing the shopping street Karl Johan, where, among other things, the new tourist information office will be.

The Central Station in Oslo has today about 150,000 travellers every day. It is expected that this number will double in the next few years. The existing station has been expanded in stages and does therefore not work as well as it could. One hopes that the improved version of the Central Station will be big and function well enough for the years to come, so that further expansions will not be necessary.

It is expected that the construction of the new Oslo Central Station will begin in 2013 and will take between five to ten years to complete. The reconstruction will take place in stages so that the station will not have to close.

The height decrease is a pity but the design still looks terrific!

It's a very complex area with buildings almost on top of each other, railtracks and -tunnels, and rather poor road access to exactly where the new buildings will be. Also the busiest public transport area in Norway.

These are probably some of the reasons for the long building time. For example they will have to find solutions for all the train passengers while the construction is going on.
