Facebook firms up India expansion plan
Quote:
Social networking major Facebook has firmed up expansion plans for its India support centre in Hyderabad. It has sought an additional 1,00,000 square feet office space at Raheja Mindspace SEZ here.

At present, it has about 30,000 sft and its headcount stands at 100. According to industry officials, 1,00,000 square feet will imply a direct employment to 1,000 people.

“Facebook has sought additional space in the same premises. The agreement was finalised only last month,” confirmed an official of the IT department of the AP government. However, no time frame has been fixed to reach to this capacity, he said.

The expansion plans coincide with one year celebration of Facebook in India. The Hyderabad centre now supplements its global operations and support teams located in Palo Alto, Dublin and Austin.

Satyam Wins Saab Aerospace Contract

Quote:
In the latest sign that India's tech sector has ambitions beyond everyday software maintenance and development work, Swedish aerospace giant Saab said it plans to open a technology center on the subcontinent where engineers will focus on new product development and critical systems design for military and civilian aircraft.

The Saab India Technology Center will be operated by outsourcer Mahindra Satyam, which also handles some systems design work for European aircraft manufacturer Airbus. Satyam will locate the tech center at one of its existing facilities in Hyderabad later this year.

Engineers at the 300-seat center will work on new product development and product sustenance engineering, which focuses on keeping existing systems up to date. "India presents a huge opportunity for Saab across their business areas in aeronautics, dynamics, electronic defense systems, and security and defense solutions," Saab officials said in a statement.

Beyond its significance as a sign that India's outsourcing market is diversifying, the deal represents the latest step in Satyam's revival following an accounting scandal that nearly brought the company down.

Prithvi to set up network ops centre in Hyderabad

Prithvi Information Solutions Limited, a Hyderabad-based software consulting, outsourcing and business solutions company, is in the process of setting up a network operations centre (NOC) to monitor and maintain telecommunications networks of its clients in Brazil, Canada and central American countries from here.

“Earlier, we had a separate team for each geography. Now, we have consolidated our global telecom engineering services (TES) teams into one, which will be running out of Hyderabad with 1,000 people. We are on the verge of signing contracts with OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) like Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN), Alcatel, Ericsson and Huawei. The NOC, which will require an investment of $3 million in the next two years, will be operational from early September, NSN to start with,” Madhavi Vuppalapati, chief executive officer of Prithvi Information, told Business Standard.

Vuppalapati said the company was seeing tremendous progress in terms of IT managed services in the last one year, where it was outsourcing desktop support, Tier-I customer support, customer satisfaction support and quality assurance services for Fortune 500 companies.
“We have also changed our strategy in IT outsourcing and will now focus on mid-Tier customers that are between $1 billion and $10 billion to become their IT outsourcing partners, which will be a very high margin business for us. We are currently in talks with 10 global customers and have already signed two contracts to open dedicated centres (with 50 people each) for them. Our goal is to win all these 10 accounts soon,” she said.

To hire 1100
Vuppalapati said the company was looking at hiring 600 people between IT managed services and telecom engineering services over the next six months and hopefully more by the end of this financial year. For the network operations centre, Prithvi will recruit 500 more during the same timeframe, she said.

FY12 revenues to stay flat
Prithvi Information Solutions, which reported revenues of $422 million in FY10, clocked $341.3 million in FY11. The company expects its revenues to remain flat or grow 2-3 per cent this financial year. While IT contributes 67.25 per cent to the revenues, telecom accounts for the rest.

Vuppalapati said because of the recession in the US, net payment terms had been rapidly growing. “If you take the time value into consideration, we weren't making money on those deals. By design, we wanted to get rid of those contracts and focus on long-term deals. That is the main reason why we are now working on the managed services model, where payment terms are net 10 days to net 30 days,” she added.

“We are taking our focus away from growth in topline to growth in bottom line. We will rather be a half-a-billion dollar company with 20 per cent margins than becoming a $1-billion firm with 8-10 per cent margins. Right now, our margins are between 8 and 10 per cent and our goal is to rapidly grow that to 13-15 per cent in one or one-and-a-half years from now,” Vuppalapati said.

Prithvi’s scrip ended the trade at Rs 27.70 on the BSE on Friday, up 1.65 per cent, over the previous close of Rs 27.25.

Hyderabad fast turning into a hub for startup companies

HYDERABAD: Amid the towering offices of multinational companies crowding the lanes of Hi-Tec City is a bunch of quirky, one-room 'work stations' which are scripting a new identity for Hyderabad - that of a startup hub. Run by tech 'gurus' throbbing with out-of-the-box concepts, these startups are mushrooming across the city's IT centre giving the jitters to firms even in Delhi, Chennai and Pune.

In fact in the last three years alone, their numbers have shot up from just a handful to over 400 and have a range of IT services on offer. From innovative products , advanced IT solutions and web-based facilities they have garnered expertise in every field, taking biggies in the industry by a storm.

While the startup story of Hyderabad is at least a decade old, what has led to the tremendous spurt in their numbers of late is a startup-friendly 'ecosystem' that has developed within the industry over the last few years. Besides the techies who have thrown their plump MNC jobs to the winds to turn entrepreneurs, it's also a set of well-equipped incubation centres that have helped nurture the city's startup market. To add to that is a network of angel investors pumping funds to crystallize creative ideas.

IT gives city realty sector a booster dose

TNN | Jul 26, 2011, 12.52AM IST

HYDERABAD: The Telangana issue may have kept Andhra Pradesh on the boil, but Hyderabad continues to beat the T-heat by reigning as a hot and happening destination for IT/ITeS (information technology and IT enabled services) sector, according to the latest report of real estate consultancy major Cushman & Wakefield.

In fact, with the exception of Bangalore, Hyderabad beat other key IT/ITeS destinations like Chennai, NCR and Pune when it comes to luring IT/ITeS players to mop up office space during the April-June 2011 quarter.

According to Cushman & Wakefield, of the total 1 million sq ft space that was lapped up by companies in Hyderabad during the quarter, nearly 80 lakh sq ft space was mopped up by the IT/ITeS sector, with the remaining being picked up by sectors like BFSI (banking, financial services and insurance), engineering and consulting.

In comparision, NCR saw 64 lakh sq ft space being picked up by IT/ITeS players, Chennai 54 lakh sq ft and Pune 48 lakh sq ft space. Bangalore saw a whopping 2.96 million sq ft space being lapped up by IT players during the quarter.

The quarter saw social networking giant Facebook expand its presence in the city by leasing another 1.2 lakh sq ft space at the Raheja Mindspace, where it had made its debut in the middle of last year.

Interestingly, the total 1 million square ft space absorption during the April-June quarter this year marks a 13% jump over total office space absorption in the city during the January-March 2011 quarter, putting to rest the fears that the T-stir was taking its toll on the city's growth prospects.

"Hyderabad, which has been under the scanner due to its current political conditions, has put up an impressive growth which has shown promise over the last few quarters," said Arvind Nandan, executive director (consultancy services) Cushman & Wakefield. In fact, "Hyderabad remains dependent on the growth of IT/ITeS and is expected to remain so," Nandan added.

The reason for the healthy demand for space from the IT/ITeS sector is largely driven by the fact that IT/ITeS companies have long ago discounted the T-factor, explained Naveen Nandwani, office director (Hyderabad and Bangalore) at Cushman & Wakefield.

According to Cushman & Wakefield, IT/ITeS would continue to drive demand for office space in the city in the coming quarters as well despite the fact that a supply of around 1.5 lakh sq ft was expected to be added during the July-September 2011 quarter as several large projects get completed.

The trend of increasing absorption, the report added, was likely to continue during the second half of the year because the second half of the year usually sees a larger absorption of space going by previous yearly trends. "The demand for office space in Hyderabad is outstripping supply and putting pressure on rentals especially in the IT district. Rentals which were in the Rs 34-38 per sq ft range in areas like Madhapur are expected to go up in the coming quarters," Nandwani explained.

According to Cushman & Wakefield, of the total 1 million sq ft space that was lapped up by companies in Hyderabad during the quarter, nearly 80 lakh sq ft space was mopped up by the IT/ITeS sector, with the remaining being picked up by BFSI (banking, financial services and insurance), engineering and consulting.
