Facebook to open first centre in Hyderabad

Published on Wed, Jun 16, 2010 at 17:38 Source : CNBC-TV18

Social networking major Facebook is now set to enter India. CNBC-TV18 learns that with an investment of USD 150 million, Facebook is set to open its first centre in Hyderabad. CNBC-TV18's Kritika Saxena reports on what are Facebook's plans and would this make networking more interesting for Indian users.

Sources said Facebook is in talks with Videocon, Reliance for tie-ups. It is likely to invest USD 150 million in the initial phase. The company plans to set up its office in Hyderabad in 2010. According to sources the company has already bought the land and will be setting up a large office in Hyderabad.

Over the next one year, it is learnt that they would be tapping cities like Bangalore and Delhi. Mumbai is not on its radar for the moment.

The investment is largely for advertising, infrastructure, and IT spends. It is likely to hire 60 employees in the initial phase. Sources said about 150-200 employees would be hired by 2012.

Facebook has a subscriber base of 8 million users in India.

When contacted, Facebook confirmed it will be setting up its India operations. "We expect to announce our India plans shortly. However, we cannot comment on our investment details."

This means a larger amount of localised content for Indian users. About 2% of Facebook subcribers are from India.

Facebook India gets space in IT SEZ
Andhra Business Bureau

K. Ratna Prabha, Principal Secretary, ICT, Govt of Andhra Pradesh
HYDERABAD: Facebook will set up its office in the Raheja Mindspace special economic zone, though it will launch its incubator facility first in about a couple of months.
A State Government communique said that the Union Government accorded approval to the social networking site's proposal for space in an SEZ.
The company was hiring people, especially in the marketing wing. The operations from the incubator would be regularised eventually.
Facebook’s new operations center in the city will complement the work done at its headquarters at Palo Alto, California, Dublin, Ireland and a recently announced location in Austin, Texas. The Hyderabad office will be the first office of Facebook in Asia.
The Union Government accorded sanction for five IT companies to set up their offices in an area of 3.91 lakh sq. ft in different IT SEZs in the Sate. The other prominent MNCs include Accenture, and Invesco(expansion).

Sources said Facebook was allotted about 50,000 sq. ft space and was going to recruit close to 500 people to run their operations. Facebook has about eight million subscribers in India and is said to be investing US $ 150 million initially. The social networking site has more than 400 million active users worldwide.

During the year, new IT MNC like JP Morgan, United Health Group had come forward to set up their operations. Existing companies like Cognizant Technology Services, TCS, Infosys, Invesco, were significantly expanding their operations.

The IT companies began their annual recruitment and hiring plans. Further, she said that the recession did not have any impact on the creation and filling of office space in IT SEZs by the infrastructure developers. In fact during the recent past, infrastructure providers like Raheja and Divyasree, closed space booking deals of more than 32 lakh sq. ft of office space with renowned IT companies.
While the growth of IT was restricted to Hyderabad, now it was spreading to tier-II cities like Warangal, Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, Vijayawada, and Tirupati.

The Hindu
State eyes 17% growth in IT sector

Sets target of 10 crore sq ft of space for IT, ITES, IT exports of Rs 70,000 cr by 2015-end.
Hyderabad, June 29

After witnessing deals for 32 lakh sq ft of office space, the Andhra Pradesh Government has set a target of 10 crore sq ft of space for IT and ITES, including in the Special Economic Zones earmarked for the industry, and creation of 10 lakh jobs in the next five years. Addressing a gathering after inaugurating the facility of IT solutions company Model N here on Tuesday, Mr K. Rosaiah, the Chief Minister, said the State targets IT exports to the tune of Rs 70,000 crore by the end of 2015, when the upcoming IT Policy comes to a close.

“We are going to hold a Cabinet meet on July 1 to clear the IT Policy for 2010-15. We are expecting an annual growth rate of 17 per cent from the present Rs 32,500 crore,” Mr Rosaiah said.

Stating that the State could wrest maximum number (57) of IT SEZs in a national total of 351, he said 55 companies had already started operations from about 15 SEZs. “The IT units in SEZs reported exports of Rs 2,351 crore for the nine-month period ended December 31, 2009, as against Rs 1,317 crore in the previous financial year,” he said.

While the Government had the mandate for 18 of the 57 SEZs, private players would get 28 SEZs. Eleven campuses of several IT companies were given the SEZ-tag.

ITIR plan

Meanwhile, the Government awaited the Union Government's response to its proposal to develop IT Investment Region (ITIR), encompassing three hubs in Hyderabad. “We have made a presentation to the Union Government. We expect their nod soon,” he said.

The State had prepared a plan to develop about 200 sq km of area covering Gachibowli, Madhapur and Uppal to build space for office, commercial and residential purposes. Andhra Pradesh was one of the first States to respond to the ITIR concept proposed by the Union Government a few years ago.

The State forecast investments of Rs 2.20 lakh crore over a period of 25 years, providing 15 lakh jobs and earning revenues of Rs 3 lakh crore.

Model N to invest $25 mn in Hyderabad facility
BS Reporter / Chennai/ Hyderabad June 30, 2010, 0:58 IST

Model N Inc, a Silicon Valley-based revenue management solutions provider, will be investing $25 million (approximately Rs 117 crore) in its India operations at Hyderabad over the next three years, according to Zack Rinat, its founder and chief executive officer.

Announcing the launch of its Hyderabad centre on Tuesday, the company’s third with the other two located at Redwood Shores in the US and London, Rinat said the centre at present housed 105 professionals, which would be scaled up to 250 by the end of September 2011. The privately-held company follows the October-September financial year.

“Our decision to establish our Asia headquarters in Andhra Pradesh was largely driven by chief minister K Rosaiah’s vision for the region to become a hub for the pharmaceutical and high-tech industries,” he added.

The Hyderabad centre will be engaged in product development, professional services, application support, product management, quality assurance, customer support and documentation, with primary focus on the pharmaceutical, life sciences and high-tech marketplace.

Model N currently has a revenue management suite comprising 14 applications, and has over 40,000 end users in the high-tech space. Talking about revenue management, Rinat said for every $1 billion of revenues, companies leave anywhere between $40 million and $120 million on the table.

India is projected to be the 10th largest pharmaceutical market by 2015, and is set to be positioned among the top five markets with a $20-billion size in absolute growth terms by then,” he said, adding that the company was expecting the Asia-Pacific region to contribute 20 per cent to its global revenues over a period of time.

10 crores sq feet or 100 million sqft of office space for IT & ITES at the rate of 20 million sq ft per year by 2015 is very ambitious.I doubt the assesment of the potential only for A.P.

New IT policy hailed

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The new IT policy for 2010-15 evoked positive response from the IT industry.

B. V. R. Mohan Reddy, Chairman and Managing Director, Infotech, welcomed the special focus bestowed on engineering services which was estimated to become a US $ 45 billion enterprise by 2020. Hyderabad had a good base for engineering services and Rs. 2.5 lakh reimbursement for every patent filed would give impetus to R&D and product development, he said.

J. A. Chowdary, former chairman of ITsAP and Executive Chairman, Talent Sprint Pvt Ltd., IIIT Campus, said separate towers for SMEs in IT SEZs and rental subsidy would give huge benefit for start up companies. This would also attract units from outside the State to AP. The new IT policy addressed the lacunae in the national IT policy, he added.
