Kokapet IT hub a reality soon
Sudipta Sengupta, TNN, Jul 9, 2010, 12.05am IST HYDERABAD: It's ‘Operation Kokapet' that is now gaining momentum in the corridors of government offices. With the IT Special Economic Zone in this area, about 8 kms from Gachibowli, lying vacant for the last three years, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has now cracked the whip, forcing corporates to start construction activity there at the earliest or lose the plots allotted to them in the SEZ. ![]() Sources say the the government body, which oversees the SEZ, has even issued a directive to the companies that were allotted plots here, to begin work latest by September. The order states that firms failing to comply with the ruling will end up losing their share in the SEZ. Close to a dozen corporate bigwigs including IT majors like Mahindra Satyam, Congnizant, Sonata Software, Patni Computers, Intelligroup, Infinite and corporate giants such as Google, D Q Entertainment and C-Bay are among those who were given land by HMDA at the Kokapet SEZ, spread over 125 acres (approx), in 2006. However, the area has seen little activity since then. Analysts say that the firms kept their plans of setting shop here on hold until now owing to reasons such as legal tangles, financial disputes between them and HMDA and even Kokapet's poor connectivity with the city. ![]() "The project has been riddled with controversy ever since it took off," said an industry source adding, "Construction of the outer ring road too is still not complete. It will be a while before it can pick up as a preferred IT destination." At present, the area only has a few hutments and small buildings. However, speculation is now rife about corporates re-looking at Kokapet with some even identifying plots to start work soon. "We have been hearing that they have come forward to set up offices in the Kokapet SEZ. But no company is ready to give a confirmation," said a senior executive of a leading infrastructure group. The official added, "It could be that their decision follows HMDA's directive as all of them had been lying low until now." Industry experts say that pushing companies to start construction is a `marketing strategy' of the government to hard sell Kokapet to commercial developers. "If corporates eventually set shop here, it would only because of this pressure created by HMDA. Otherwise why would they be ready for expansion when they are already down in the dumps following recession and Telangana agitations," said a senior analyst. When contacted, the corporates concerned refused to comment on the issue with some citing `silent period' (time for closing quarter results) as a reason for it. Meanwhile, HMDA officials confirmed that these companies would soon start work at Kokapet, even as they brushed aside all queries about the order issued by the authority. "We have given them (the corporates) the land and they should utilise it. It has been lying idle for very long now," said V Madhwajara, chief engineer, HMDA.

Focus is back on Hyderabad. IT Companies are back with Expansion Plans
Hyderabad had emerged as a strong contender to Bangalore as India’s strongest IT hub with proactive policies of then Chief Minister of AP, Mr. Chandra Babu Naidu. It managed to take the focus away from Bangalore in 2008 and most part of 2009. But the Telangana State agitation which paralyzed the city for several weeks, during last quarter of 2009 and in January 2010 made the IT industry jittery. Several companies put off their expansion plans in Hyderabad. Many started moving staff to Bangalore and other cities. ![]() However, with the city remaining calm, business is back and is once again emerging as the most favored state for information technology (IT) giants. IT majors have announced huge expansion plans that will create three lakh new jobs according to the State Govt. For the first time since the Telangana agitation started, two multinationals have shown interest about opening their India operations centers in Hyderabad. JP Morgan and the United Health Group will set up their units at Raheja’s SEZ at Madhapur. Existing companies like Tata Consultancy, Wipro, Accenture, Infosys, Virtusa and Honeywell too have informed the government that they are going ahead with their expansion plans in spite of disturbances. Recently, Facebook announced opening of their first offshore development center in Hyderabad. ![]() Mindspace’s first phase is full with units and they are going ahead with their second phase of SEZ near New Hyderabad Airport. TCS has also started construction for the Gachibowli centre expansion. ![]() Infosys, Wipro and Accenture have received permission from the government for their expansion projects with the first two presenting plans to recruit 3,700 people this season. TCS has informed the government that it will recruit 7,000 people during its expansion. ![]() This is in addition to the recruitment proposed for the Tishman Speyer International Development Centre. The company will employ 2,500 people for this centre. New facilities of Virtusa are under various stages of completion and are expected to start operations in two months. ![]() HMDA (Hyderbbad Metro Development Agency) which was the catalyst in the emergence of Hyderabad as an IT destination, by its quick planning and development of large scale infrastructure facilities in the west of Hyderabad has announced plans for expanding the highly successful Financial District in Gachibowli by building infrastructure nearby Tellapur. The Financial District houses, apart from others, ICICIs gigantic 25 floor structure which is getting ready for occupation.

For all this to happen, Hyderabad needs atleast one more dose of CBN rule for 5 years. If not, it will continue to trail other metro cities of India.
There is no doubt that HMDA formation and ORR are game changing for Hyderabad but it still needs a big push from some one like CBN for one term. Quote:

UST Global to add 8,000 staff in India
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Sensing an uptick in business in the post-recession environment, end-to-end IT solutions provider for Global 1,000 companies, UST Global has chalked out major hiring plans. UST Global’s Orange County, California-based CEO, Sajan Pillai told ET here that that the company planned to add 8,000 professionals to its headcount in India, a large majority of them in Thiruvananthapuram, where the company presently has a staff strength of roughly 4,000. The remaining numbers will be added at the company’s other India centers at Chennai, Kochi and Bangalore. “That will take the India headcount to about 14,000 over the next 12-18 months”, Pillai said. UST Global is also considering an operations base in Hyderabad, and has firmed up plans to “immediately raise headcount at the Philippines centre to 1,000 from the present level of 300 staffers”. The company already has the infrastructure to accommodate 1,000 staffers at its Philippines base. Pillai said a “new normal” situation prevailed across the international business horizon in the post-recession phase, where “companies are demanding increased productivity levels from all suppliers including IT suppliers”. “Earlier, when a customer wanted to drill a hole in the wall, the choice was often the equipment to do that, while it now has changed to the solution rather than spending on the gadget. The IT services space is also witnessing that change from an emphasis on putting more people on a job to offering enhanced services. So we see companies having their HR work or sales management processed externally, bringing more exciting times for IT services and solutions providers”, Pillai said. He said IT companies were presently opting to be multi-location based, both for geo-political reasons as well as for hedging operational risks, and that large clients were looking at medium-sized IT providers, too, bringing better prospects for the lower-rung tech companies that had competitive offerings. UST Global is in the process of launching a new campus in Thiruvananthapuram, and in the US the company had recently implemented next generation business process management solution for Catalina Marketing, a retail enabler and leader in precision marketing. |

Zensar Tech plans two centres
MUMBAI (Reuters) - Software services provider Zensar Technologies Ltd(ZENT.BO) plans to invest 50 million rupees in FY11, mainly to set up two development centres, a top official said on Thursday. "We are setting up a 300-seat centre within SEZ (special economic zone) in Hyderabad, which will start in September," Vice Chairman and Managing Director Ganesh Natarajan told Reuters over the telephone. ![]() The firm, which already has development centres in Hyderabad and Pune, also plans a 100-seater centre in Shanghai which would be operational by September, he said. The Shanghai centre will help further the company's global plans, and provide support to U.S. customers' manufacturing needs in China. It will focus primarily on manufacturing and government verticals. It also plans to open an office in Saudi Arabia, following an increase in focus on enterprise business in the Middle-East. "Under our overall recruitment plans for this year (FY11), because there is a lot of projects ramping up, we need to around 750-800 people," he said, adding the company has been getting projects at "higher rates." Zensar added 109 employees in April-June, taking its total headcount to 5,342, it said in a statement. The Pune-based company is also evaluating three U.S. companies for acquisitions in the range of $60-100 million. The company was looking to acquire companies with annual revenues of $40-$120 million. |
