Roadmap for IT investment regions in three states soon. HYDERABAD: The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology will soon come out with the final modalities for IT Investment Regions (ITIR) proposed to be set up in Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and Karnataka, a top official said on Wednesday. "The Planning Commission has in principle agreed for setting up projects in three states. As per the process we are in consultations with various departments. We are working out modalities. We will be able to come out with the finality in 3-4 months," IT Secretary R Chandrasekhar told reporters on the sidelines of eIndia-2010, a three day conclave of IT and IT related activities. ITIRs are larger than IT SEZs and are specifically notified investment region with minimum area of 40 sq km planned for IT and ITeS and EHM units. The minimum processing area would be 40 per cent of the total area of the ITIR and the remaining will be for other infrastructure like roads, buildings and other utilities. The Andhra Pradesh government has identified three locations, including one at the international airport covering about 150 sq kilometers in Hyderabad for the ITIR. "A special purpose vehicle will be floated to execute the ITIR project," a senior state IT department official said. Speaking on the National e-Governance Program, Chandrasekhar said the government is going to spend Rs 40,000 crore in three to four years on different projects of the NeGP. This includes initial two to three years of the operational phase. The implementation of the project and the process of making services available is expected to complete by 2014," he said. |

Broadcom India sets to increase headcount
By N Vasudevan Aug 11 2010 , Bangalore Tags: Opportunities After an 18-month lull in hiring, semiconductor firms have started recruiting aggressively again. Broadcom India plans to increase its headcount by about 300 people at its Bangalore and Hyderabad centres. Most of the hires will be experienced engineers for mobile and wireless space. Broadcom presently employs 500 techies in the two cities. This is one of the firm’s largest engineering concentrations outside of the US. The company has taken up extra space in Bangalore and Hyderabad for the people addition. Rajiv Kapur, managing director of Broadcom India said, “This expansion of our facilities in both cities demonstrates Broadcom’s commitment of India as a key contributor to company’s global growth. Broadcom India’s engineers are key members of our global engineering teams for a number of our products and have played an integral role in our global business success.” The engineering centre in Bangalore works on various products across all of the company’s target markets like broadband communications, mobile and wireless network infrastructure. The Hyderabad centre develops products for Broadcom’s Network Infrastructure, Broadband Communications and Corporate Enterprise IT solutions. Kapur said there is a huge demand for 3D video content in high-end markets, while HD is picking up in fast pace in India. “We have come up with compelling products, where the quality of HD, price points, and features are perfectly fit for Indian market. We will continue to invest in this space,” he said. |

Hyderabad’s Ybrant Digital Acquires the Once-Great Lycos
Aug. 17 – Hyderabad-based marketing company Ybrant Digital acquired the once-popular search engine and web portal Lycos from South Korea’s Daum Communications for US$36 million yesterday. “Our goal is to combine the benefits of Ybrant’s global network with what Lycos has to offer in creating a compelling global destination for our advertising clients worldwide,” said Suresh Reddy, Ybrant’s chairman and CEO. Founded in 1999, Ybrant Digital buys internet traffic on web sites and sells it to advertisers. The acquisition will allow the Indian company to offer Lycos’ online services, like its search engine, to a network of advertisers. “The quality of content and tools offered by Lycos has always attracted the best of the consumers across the world,” Reddy said. While Lycos still draws 60 million global visits per month, according to Daum Communications, the US$36 million price tag is a far cry from the nearly US$13 billion it commanded only 10 years ago when it was bought up by Terra Networks of Spain. Founded in 1994, the Lycos search engine was incredibly popular in the late 1990s and the web site became one of the most visited domains in the world in 1999 with a strong global presence. Around the time of its takeover by Terra Networks, though, Google was emerging as the favorite choice and Lycos has gone down ever since – being sold to Daum Communications in 2004 for US$95.4 million and now to Ybrant for a mere US$36 million. Ybrant recorded US$70 million in revenue last fiscal year and its network serves prominent international brands like Dell, Intel, HP, Cisco, Sony, Nokia, Blackberry, Ford, Jaguar, Land Rover, Toyota, and Porsche.

Infotech to hire 2,000 this fiscal
Infotech Enterprises Limited, a Hyderabad-based technology solutions provider offering engineering and geographic information (GI) services, is looking to hire 1,500-2,000 professionals by the end of the present financial year, backed by its growing business from the existing clients across verticals. The company employs 8,000 people globally. "The hiring will be a combination of all the domains that we have, including engineering and GI. We see more traction coming in and we would certainly like to have more," said B Ashok Reddy, president (global HR and corporate affairs) of Infotech. He was speaking to mediapersons on the sidelines of ‘HR Conclave — Talent building for emerging India’ organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in Hyderabad. Reddy said the visa row did not have any impact on the company as of its total strength, less than 50 per cent was under L1 and H1B visas. "We currently have 780 people on rolls in the US of which about 250 could be under L1 and H1B. In the case of Wellsco, which we acquired recently, all the 180 resources are locals. We are safe in there," he added. |
