Since there's no poll, I made a little ranking so far. Most people don't make a list with a clear ranking, so I just awarded 1 point per mentioned city, and 2 points for the number one, if there is one indicated... It's not a perfect system but gives an idea:

1. Paris 59 points
2. Rome 47 points
3. Prague 46 points
4. London 35 points
5. Vienna 30 points

6. Amsterdam 24 points
7. Budapest 23 points
8. Madrid 20 points
9. Lisbon 17 points
10. Brussels 16 points
Stockholm 16 points

12. Berlin 15 points
13. Edinburgh 10 points
14. Copenhagen 8 points
15. Bern 7 points

16. Ljubljana 5 points
17. Tallin 4 points
Moscow 4 points
19. Vilnius 3 points
20. Sarajevo 2 points
Helsinki 2 points
Bucharest 2 points
Riga 2 points
Luxemburg 2 points

Scotland is indeed a country.

The UK is a unitary state made up of four constituent countries.

It's still a country though, it has its own government, its own schooling system etc. etc... - so therefore Edinburgh is a capital city. Simple as that.

The title of the thread is "What do you think is the most beautiful European capital?".

Edinburgh is a capital and one of the most beautiful in Europe, so it is perfectly valid to be nominated by whoever wants to nominate it.

For me (though I havent visited all european capitals)

1: Stockholm. (Because of the Islands, the water, and the historic center)
2: Rome. (Because of the eternal history with its buildings/ruins/monuments)
3: Prag. (Because of its castles, historic center and landscape)
4: Paris (Because of the boulevards and grand arcitecture)

Budapest, Amsterdam, Lisbon and Wien must be lovely aswell. Too many great capitals to mention here. I can also imagine less known capitals like Bern, Zagreb, Ljubliana, Bratislava amongs others are really great. All european capitals are worth visiting.

it's crazy London has more votes than this cities:

Vienna 30 points
Amsterdam 24 points
Budapest 23 points
Madrid 20 points
Lisbon 17 points
Stockholm 16 points
Tallin 4 points
Bucharest

I suppose it's just that people dont know them, or most forumers are voting for their own capital city or just the cities they've heard about (I've noticed most people voting for London are not european). It's also crazy that Istambul isn't even on the list, it should really be in the top 5 or 10. What about Kiev and Zagrev? I'm sure many anglosaxons might think those names are car models, but they are amazing cities.

According to Edinburgh, it surely is one of the most beautyful cities in Europe, but it's certainly not the capital of a country. Even if one could call the UK a federation wich it's not, it wouldn't be a country's capital.
If we apply the same criteria of those saying Edinburgh is a capital, then every US state would be a country.

This is utter madness and now verging on the ridiculous.

No one is saying the UK is a federation and certainly the four countries of the UK are not comparable to US states.

The UK is made up of four countries, FACT. The UK is therefore perhaps unique in the world, think on it as a 300 year old pre-cursor to the EU where four countries relinquished their soverenty in order to join together to form an trading partnership, expand trading opportunites in colonies and mutual defense.

Scotland is a country, granted it is not currently independant, but is a country none the less since it's formation in AD840.
