Day 26 - Aberdeen to Dundee.
For a minute the eyes of the sporting world will be on my home village of less than 500 people as the torch passes through. A place where I enjoyed some sporting success at the lowest level, school football team and winning the sports day cup - it'll make me proud to head back home and see the Olympic Torch going through the main street of such a small and usually boring place!

Bragging rights over freinds in nearby villages!!

Olympic Torch to visit Dublin in run-up to London 2012 Games The London

The Olympic Torch is to visit Dublin in the run-up to the London 2012 Games, it has been confirmed.

Last month, the Games organisers Locog set out the 1,018 places the torch will pass through when it is carried around the UK from 19 May to 27 July 2012.

Dublin is to be the torch's only detour outside of the UK in the lead-up to the Games.

It will be brought there on the morning of 6 June.

The visit was ratified by the International Olympic Committee at its executive board meeting in Lausanne on Thursday.

Locog said the visit to Dublin had been arranged "to shine a light on the rich heritage and sporting ambitions of Ireland, north and south".

It said proceedings would culminate in a mid-morning celebration event at a city-centre location.

Further details are to be confirmed next year.

A golden plane will weigh a monstrous amount! Not very good for the environment.

Its not going to be a plane made out of gold, that would be insane..gold liveried plane is just the colour of the plane not what it is made from... like BA have the Union flag as their livery

I thought the second city of the Empire is either Sydney or Toronto. I mean Ireland does not even participate in the Commonwealth Games...so how can you call Dublin that??

The relay route goes right passed the top of my road, but... that is one of the transit, dotted phases so if I want to see the torch in procession I'll have a little walk down the road to the finish point (presuming I'm not in work), it is exciting to think that something rather insignificant is happening in what is a rather uninteresting part of the country is linked to biggest sporting event in the world, bit mad really

Well I would imagine it's the flame and torch which is what is meant to stand out.

Greece Gets Ready

The Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC) has announced that Greece's British-born swimming world champion, Spyros Gianniotis, will be the first Torchbearer for the Greek leg of the London 2012 Torch Relay.

Running from 10–17 May, the 3,000km Relay will see the Olympic Flame carried by 500 people as it passes through 34 Greek cities, before being handed to London 2012 representatives ahead of the 70-day Relay around the UK and Ireland.
Liverpool-born Gianniotis, who won gold in the 10km open water event at last year’s FINA World Championships in Shanghai, is expected to be a major medal contender at the 2012 Olympic Games and has already stated that, “swimming in London will be like swimming at home”.

The Greek leg of the Torch Relay will begin on 10 May with a ceremony at the Temple of Hera in Ancient Olympia, where the Olympic Flame will be lit using the sun's rays in the presence of International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge and London 2012 Chairman Seb Coe. It will then begin its journey across Greece, travelling to the island of Crete before going to Piraeus, Thessalonica, Xanthi and Larissa.

On 17 May, the Flame will arrive in the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens – the site of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 – where it will be handed to the London 2012 delegation.

The UK leg of the Torch Relay will then begin on 18 May, before finishing at the London 2012 Opening Ceremony on 27 July.

It does look boring but I think it's traditional now + look at whomever will be carrying the Olympic flag in and out of Olympic stadium (or even in the past), they too are/were dressed in all white. (Still fashionable to wear white BEFORE Labor Day. )

The last time the Olympic flag was carried into the Opening Ceremony arena by those wearing non-white outfits was in Mexico 1968 when it was Mexican naval cadets wearing their dress navy (what else?) blue coats.

The last time the final torch bearer who lit the cauldron was wearing non-white was at Innsbruck 1976. Freimantel was wearing a predominantly red-and-white jumpsuit (colors of the Austrian flag). Whereas, the Greek priestesses who preside over the Lighting ceremony at Olympia are in some beige/sand-colored outfit...that is because the flame then is still HOC-property...NOT IOC property. When it gets handed over to the first runner, then it becomes IOC property (or at least they seem to think so...)

So the IOC now strictly controls/decrees the outfits of whomever will be touching/carrying their symbols. (Read an learn more about Olympic factoids like these in that certain book about Olympic Ceremonies by Myles Garcia.)

Have you no shame? Stop pushing that damn book of yours on a free forum, or at least give SSC some money and officially advertise!
