Olympic Stadium

The Olympic Stadium design uses an innovative 'bowl' for the track and permanent lower tiers of seating. This bowl and the whole stadium site are currently being dug at a rate of over 50,000 cubic metres a week.

Work is on schedule - in fact, construction of the stadium is likely to start two to three months early.

From http://www.london2012.com/

Well I suppose it can be well ahead of schedule if you're only putting up a tent.

That last comment was silly the prep work going into this is amazing and the ground workers working like crazy thats why it's ahead of schedule. This has nothing to do with the actual stadium construction you nimby. The stadium does have steel work as well you know

I thought it said 'work is on schedule'; so we're meant to be impressed that they have dug a hole very quickly throughout a very mild winter.

Does anyone have plans of the stadium. If the playing surface is up to 9 metres below grade then does it follow that all the stadium facilities are subterranean.

Construction of London 2012 stadium to start early
LONDON, March 11 (Reuters) - Construction of London's 2012 Olympic Stadium is to start three months ahead of schedule, the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) said on Tuesday.
Work began on clearing the site last July and construction was originally scheduled to begin on the stadium by the time the Beijing Games start in August.
However, progress has been quicker than expected and, after the removal of vast quantities of contaminated soil, work on the bowl-like 80,000-seat stadium will begin in May.
It is a major boost to 2012 organisers, wary of the bad publicity over the Wembley Stadium project that was completed more than a year late.
"We have investigated the Olympic Stadium site, demolished tens of buildings and excavated 800,000 tonnes of soil," ODA chairman John Armitt said on Tuesday.
"Now that we have finished the work to dig the bowl where the opening and closing ceremony and athletics will take place in 2012, we are firmly on track to start construction work ahead of schedule."
The ODA said small amounts of low level radiological material have been found during excavations.
"This soil, with mild radioactive properties present due to the past industrial activity over the last 100 years or so, is being managed so that it presents no risk to public or workers," an ODA statement said.
"It has been stockpiled separately on site and will be taken away to be disposed of in the next few weeks."
The stadium, which will cost 496 million pounds, will be the focal point of the Olympic Park which is being built on former industrial land in east London.
The 2.5-square-km park will also house the Aquatics Centre, the Velodrome, the hockey, fencing, basketball and handball arenas and the international media centre.
After the Games the stadium will be scaled back to 25,000 seats. It will retain a permanent athletics track, although no long-term tenant has yet been found. (Reporting by Martyn Herman; editing by Rex Gowar) ("Countdown to Beijing Olympics" blog at http://blogs.reuters.com/china)

They transfer the electricity underground in the summer (can't do it in the winter), and once this is done they can dismantle them.

Olympic ship plan abandoned

Organisers of the 2012 London Olympics have jettisoned plans for an around-the-world sail to advertise the UK's cultural riches.

Plans had been for a clipper - to be named the Olympic Friend-ship - to spend four years at sea with a crew of artists, philosophers and students under the command of professional officers.

But the scheme - which was to promote Britain ahead of the games - has been pulled, with the London Organising Committee stating they were now looking at other ways to deliver the message.

Seems like this would have been a good use for the replacement of Britannia, another vessel promoting the UK which was cancelled.

marrio415, you missed the point completely. Yes I live in Stratford & I walk to work along the Greenway every day past the developing stadium bowl, it is very much in my back yard which is why I take such a keen interest in what is happening. I want things to change for the better, it certainly needed to.
The tent comment was drawn from The Architects' Journal.
The stadium promised in the bid with the iconic cantilevered roof mimicking the muscle fibers has gone to be replaced by a concrete bowl with a temporary superstructure. They don't have to have such massive foundations, no wonder work is ahead of schedule.

All that will be left after the Olympics will be the lower tier, that is why I am disappointed.

I haven't heard of any plans to knock down any of the Carpenters Estate residential towers.
But as Plaisow pointed out in another thread on this site, James Riley Point does look under-occupied with only a couple of floors ever having lights on at night.

Yes everything is going to plan

---------------------------------------------------------------

London will use extensive security package intended to ensure safety at the London Olympics.

The Metropolitan Police's head of special operations, Assistant Commissioner Tarique Ghaffur, announced £600m worth of measures at a conference in Abu Dhabi.

He said the police are planning to co-ordinate London's half a million existing CCTV cameras, and scan the crowds using state-of-the-art identity recognition techniques.

Further monitoring will be carried out by three helicopters.

Also planned are an automatic vehicle number-plate recognition system and biometric checks for the 40,000 workers who will be employed in constructing the Olympic Park.

The measures will be in place for a 60-day period around the games.

Mr Ghaffur announced that tickets will be linked to the identity of the buyer, and that the holder will be remotely tracked from their home to the venue.

The games are considered a target for potential terrorists.

Organisers are expecting nine million people to watch the games at 33 venues across London. In addition, London can expect 15,000 athletes and 20,000 media workers.

Biometric screens are also being considered for the ninemillion spectators as they enter and every ticket will be tracked.

The site has a natural barrier with the cannals and rivers and the main
stadium is on a island.

other security is expected.
