Naples, Pompeii and Vesuvius. Italy.

Naples - brash, anarchic and in many places dirty city, some people find these qualities off putting, but not me, I loved this city. It is utterly fantastic and perhaps the only true city left in Europe ; city centre of which has not yet been taken over by estate agents or turned into a sterile yuppie heaven. It is lively place - there is hardly a quiet area, everywhere is a hive of activity - shops, restaurants, bars and all kinds of other establishments usually catering not to tourist but to local inhabitant who still dwells in the city centre, not to mention traffic, which at first sight is nuts, but surprisingly I found it easier and safer to cross streets in Naples than in London ; drivers simply drive round you or slow down and let you through, this made city much more fun and enjoyable to explore.

Enough talking heres more info if youre interested -

1. Welcome to Naples or the first sights and sounds that greeted me when I stepped out of the central station. Piazza Garibaldi is one crazy place and sums up the city quite nicely.

2. The church of San Francesco di Paola in the Piazza del Plebiscito. During the day youll find tourists here while in the evening kids playing football.

3. Palazzo Reale in the Piazza del Plebiscito. It is one of the four residences used by the Bourbon Kings of Naples during their rule of the Kingdom of Two Sicilies.

4.

5.

6. Vesuvius in the background.

7. Galleria Umberto I. It was built between 1887–1891, and was the cornerstone in the decades-long rebuilding of Naples.

8.

9. The lively Quartieri Spagnoli. I was told to avoid this area but I must have forgotten that. Totally enjoyed the place.

10.

11. Traffic is nuts in Naples!

28. Piazzetta Nilo I believe.

30. Ges¨ Nuovo, definitely one of the best looking churches in the World.

43. Villa Pignatelli.

45.

46. Centro Direzionale, Naples' CBD, rather quiet and uninteresting area.

47.

48. But this church is really cool, Centro Direzionale.

49. Naples from Vesuvius.

50.

Pompeii. Roman city lost to Vesuvius.

7. Not all of the city has been excavated. Indeed barely half has been.

17. Vesuvius.

Vesuvius. It is located about 9 kilometres east of Naples and a short distance from the shore. It is the only volcano on the European mainland to have erupted within the last hundred years, although it is not currently erupting. The two other volcanoes in Italy, Etna and Stromboli, are located on islands.

3. Dont be fooled its is very busy up there, I just didnt want to have people in my photos, almost succeeded.

4. The crater.

7. Yes, that white stuff is smoke.

Beautiful pictures!
Thanks for visiting Naples!
Next time, be sure to visit the Sorrentine Peninsula (and Capri), the Amalfi Coast and maybe even the Cilento (Province of Salerno).

Glad you enjoyed your stay!

Very nice shots. I hope you don't mind me saying so but some of the pics have a very cool almost 70s look to them, looking a tad desaturated and with lots of contrast. The city seems awesome. I've always been interested in it since it definitely isn't considered one of the classic Italian tourist hot spots.

Fantastic pics! I can see what you mean by Naples being a "true city".

Yes absolutely, just do not expect to find polished city like Paris or Berlin. It is brash, but full of life and architectural gems.

Thanks, I always get accused of oversaturating my pics, maybe I have at last reached some kind of balance!

Thanks all, youre the best. Kisses and all that

Fantastico!!! I lived near Naples for 4 years while being assigned to the NATO Base there and enjoyed my stay for the most part. In my opinion, there is more of a variety to see and do around the Naples area than Rome. For instance, there is Mount Vesuvius, Pompeii, Ercolano, Sorrento, Capri, Ischia, Caserta Royal Palace & Gardens, Herculaneum, Paestum, Amalfi Coast, as well as all of the Piazza's, Museums and Castles.

Super detailed shots of Napoli and the surrounds. Pompeii and the other towns like Herculaneum and Stabiaii in the area sounds like a very interesting visit. Napoli also has an attactive look to it even if I have heard rather pessimistic stories about Neapolitans.
