New air route between Da Nang and Da Lat cities to be opened

Quote:

The Da Nang City People’s Committee and Lam Dong province have signed an agreement with Vietnam Airlines to re-open an air route connecting Da Nang and Da Lat.

Beginning in mid-June, the carrier will operate at least four flights per week from Da Nang to Da Lat with ATR72 aircraft, the Tuoi Tre newspaper said.

The air route was re-opened to satisfy the demand of residents in the area as well as promote tourism development of two key tourism cities in the central and Central Highlands region.

LOT returns to four continents
Published by Ozgur Tore
Monday, 24 May 2010

......... In 2010 the company entered a decisive period of changes, restructuring processes and expansion to new markets. The most meaningful for the company is the development of the route network and modernization of the fleet. Before the end of the year, LOT will open up ten new routes, including connections to Hanoi, Cairo, and Damascus. With these new connections the Polish carrier's network will include four continents. The process of replacing the fleet has already begun - Embraer 145 are being replaced with Embraer 170 and 175 aircraft, and they will be joined shortly by the Embraer 190, and then the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

It looks like SkyTeam is pressuring VN to position it self to add frequency on other SE Asian cities to enhance connecion with other ST member flights. They have been adding extra daily flights to SIN & BKK in recent months, I can see CGK & MNL as future destinations for their newly arrived A321's.

MH might be seeking a code-share with VN

Vietnam Airlines re-starts HCM City-Nagoya air route
Quote:
Vietnam's national flag carrier, Vietnam Airlines will re-start direct flights from HCM city to Nagoya in Japan twice weekly from August 13.

The airline first started the route in July 2005 and suspended operations in December 2007 due to a low demand from passengers.

A representative from the airline said that currently, in total, there are 25 flights a week from HCM City to four Japanese cities including Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka and Nagoya.

The airline had previously begun the air route from Hanoi to Nagoya in November 2009.

Aviation market will improve with more airlines
Quote:

VietNamNet Bridge – Mekong Aviation is completing hectic preparations for its first commercial flight, slated for October 2010, while Jetstar Pacific is trying to expand its market share.

According to Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper, Mekong Aviation, a private airline, has decided that it will take the first commercial flight on October 10, 2010. The information is good news for Vietnam’s aviation market.

Believing that it cannot confront airlines that have experience and a certain market share, Mekong Aviation has decided to exploit the ‘niche market’: the airline will fly domestic air routes with Bombardier CRJ 900 jets. Its air routes will be Hanoi-Phu Quoc island, HCM City-Phu Quoc island with four flights per week and also Hanoi-HCM City. At this moment, other airlines do not want to fly Hanoi-Phu Quoc, because Phu Quoc only has a small airport capable of receiving aircraft with less than 100 seats. Only Vietnam Airlines can meet the requirement because it has ATR and Forker aircraft.

As such, right when it joins the market, Mekong Aviation will have an advantage. Another advantage is in aircraft. Bombardier CRJ 900 has 95 seats that flies more smoothly and more quickly than propeller-driven planes.

Mekong Aviation is the first Vietnamese airline to use the Bombardier, chartering them from US SkyWest. SkyWest will also provide the maintenance service.

Tuoi Tre newspaper quoted Vo Huy Cuong, Head of the Aviation Transport Department under the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam (CAAV), as saying that SkyWest is preparing to buy 30 percent of stakes of Mekong Aviation.

If the purchase is accepted by the Ministry of Transport, this will be the third Vietnamese airline that has sold stakes to foreign partners, after Jetstar Pacific Airlines, and VietJet Air.

It is expected that in August, Mekong Aviation will receive its first aircraft. To date, the air carrier has fulfilled three out of the five steps needed to apply for AOC (air operator’s certificate).

The budget airline Jetstar Pacific is also planning to expand its market share after a long period of coping with the economic downturn. Under an agreement with foreign partner Qantas, by 2014, the airline will put 10 Airbus A320-A321s into operation to improve flight capacity. The first A320 will be delivered in October 2010.

The airline’s fleet now includes five Boeing 747s and one Airbus A321. Jetstar Pacific’s foreign partner cooperates in training pilots and technical teams and has committed to long-term investment in Vietnam.

According to Cuong from CAAV, while Indochina Airlines is facing license revocation, the fact that Mekong Aviation is preparing to take off and Jetstar Pacific is trying to increase its capacity will help the aviation market increase transport capacity.

With a growth rate of nearly 20 percent per annum, travel demand is very high, and the three currently operational airlines cannot meet the demand, especially at peak times.

In order to take-off in October, Mekong Aviation will have to open its ticket sale system by August at the latest. It is expected that airfares will be equal or lower than the average airfare of Vietnam Airlines on the same air routes.

Polish Airlines to launch non-stop flights to Ha Noi
Quote:
Polish Airlines (LOT) officially announced in Ha Noi yesterday (August 18) that it would open a non-stop route linking Ha Noi with Warsaw on November 15. It would become the first carrier to fly the route.

LOT will offer the only non-stop commercial flight between Eastern Europe and Viet Nam ten years after an aviation agreement was signed between Poland and Viet Nam.

Vo Huy Cuong, director of the civil aviation administration of Viet Nam (CAAV)'s transportation department, said CAAV had already approved its plans and traffic rights for the non-stop commercial flights to launch in November.

Tran Trung, deputy director of the travel group TransViet, the general sale agent for LOT in Viet Nam, said the airline would start with three flights per week from Ha Noi to Warsaw on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Three flights will run from Warsaw to Ha Noi on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.

"We are very glad to become the only carrier connecting Ha Noi with Warsaw on the occasion of your capital's 1,000th anniversary celebrations," said Krzysztof Kolodziej, chief representative of LOT in Viet Nam.

With many regional destinations to choose from, such as Bangkok, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, Krzysztof said LOT selected Ha Noi because of Poland's large Vietnamese population and its desire to bring culture, families and tourists from Poland to Viet Nam and vice versa.

"Viet Nam is a charming country and it has great potential to attract European tourists," Krzysztof said.

There is also a significant travel demand from the large number of Vietnamese communities in Europe, such as Germany, France, Russia and others, he added.

LOT will use Boeing B767-300 for its Ha Noi - Warsaw flights. Round trip fares will start at US$380 for economy class and $1,950 for business class, excluding taxes and surcharges.

The carrier was established in 1929 and officially joined the Star Alliance in 2003. It now operates 55 aircraft with 210 flights per day to the EU, North America and the Middle East. Last year, it transported 4 million passengers.

Vietnam Airlines introduces online check-in service
Quote:

Vietnam Airlines has launched an online check-in facility for passengers with no checked baggage traveling on domestic and international flights departing from Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and South Korea.

The national flagship carrier said the facility is available on its website www.vietnamairlines.com and that it would save time for passengers departing from Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, Vientiane in Laos, Phnom Penh and Siem Reap in Cambodia, and Seoul and Pusan in South Korea.

The service is open four to 20 hours before departure and passengers must check-in online within the time frame. They are required to turn up at the airline’s counter at airports at least 45 minutes prior to departure.

Passengers who buy tickets online or confirm booking with the airline can also access the check-in service through its website.

Vietnam, Russia plan to hold FTA negotiations
Quote:
Vietnam and Russia agreed to soon begin negotiations on a bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the participation of the nations in the Customs Union ( Russia , Belarus and Kazakhstan ).

The first meeting of the joint working group for the Vietnam-Russia FTA will be held in Hanoi next month to embark on steps needed for the negotiations.

Consensus on this issue was reached at the 14 th meeting of the Vietnam-Russian Inter-government Committee for Economic, Commercial, Scientific and Technological Co-operation, which convened in Moscow from September 14-17.

Minister of Industry and Trade Vu Huy Hoang, and his Russian counterpart, Viktor Khrristenko, co-chaired the meeting.

The two sides focused discussions on ways to step up co-operation in the fields of economics, commerce, science and technology, and raise two-way trade.

Both sides noted with pleasure that economic and trade relations have seen progress since their 12th meeting. Bilateral trade reached a decade-high record of almost US$1.83 billion in 2009, including US$414.89 million from Vietnamese exports.

However, the officials said economic and trade ties remain modest, failing to reach their full potential to match the excellent political relations, traditional friendship and strategic partnership between the two countries.

Vietnam affirmed its desire to cooperate closely and effectively with Russia in energy, with top priority given to oil and gas, construction of power plants, and coal mining.

Other fields that need to be boosted include mechanical engineering, automobile assembly, trade, finance, banking, education, training, agriculture, science, technology, telecom, aviation, sports, culture, tourism and space research.

Both Hoang and Khrristenko affirmed the two governments’ support for companies to explore business and investment opportunities in each other’s markets.

Both sides agreed to hold the next meeting in Vietnam in 2011.

More passenger jets will arrive in Vietnam
Quote:

Airports are making expansion plans in Vietnam.

The Tan Son Nhut Airport is to be expanded to create space to service 10 additional passenger jets.

Hanoi’s Noi Bai Airport also has plans to add more space to meet the demand for air travel to the country.

The Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam will now decide on construction procedures for the expansion plans.

Capacity at Tan Son Nhut Airport is currently just enough to serve 20 million passengers a year, or 54,800 passengers a day.

An excess of 58,000 passengers a day has been seen at times at the airport.

EU and Vietnam sign aviation agreement, removing nationality restrictions
Quote:
BRUSSELS : The European Union (EU) on Monday announced that it signed an aviation agreement with Vietnamese authorities which will remove nationality restrictions in the bilateral air services agreements between EU Member States and Vietnam.

The agreement will allow any EU airline to operate flights between any EU Member State and Vietnam, where a bilateral agreement exists and traffic rights are available.

The "horizontal" agreements will bring several provisions in bilateral air services agreements between 17 Member States and Vietnam in line with European law, removing nationality restrictions in bilateral air services agreements between Vietnam and the member states.

Furthermore, the agreement will allow flights to operate between the established areas more freely, linking people, cultures and businesses. It also represents an important step towards strengthening aviation relations between the EU and Vietnam.

Currently, there are 45 such horizontal agreements with EU partner countries worldwide, and 900 bilateral air services agreements have already been modified by the joint efforts of the European Commission and EU Member States to replace nationality rules with the principle of EU airline designation.

Third Private Carrier Flies Vietnam's Skies
Quote:
KIEN GIANG (Vietnam), Oct 11 (Bernama) -- Air Mekong, Vietnam's third private airline, received its Air Operator's Certificate from the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam (CAAV) in southern Kien Giang province on Oct 8, Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported.

On the same day, the carrier also launched its first two routes, Hanoi - Phu Quoc and HCM City - Phu Quoc.

"The Vietnamese aviation market is dramatically developing. The aviation demand, especially for domestic flights, will increase considerably in the next few years," said CAAV deputy director Dinh Viet Thang.

"The introduction of Air Mekong is essential to meeting market demand, diversifying aviation services and increasing competitiveness," Thang said.

"The CAAV's certificate will open up a new page for our development", said Air Mekong chairman Doan Quoc Viet.

Air Mekong would start commercial operations since Oct 9 with eight flights from Ha Noi and HCM City to Phu Quoc, Con Dao, Buon Me Thuot, Pleiku, Viet said, adding that they would expand operations to 10 flights from November including destinations of Da Lat in the Central Highlands and Da Nang city.

The airline has launched a promotional offer until November 9 with 1,000 tickets at prices ranging from 400,000 VND to 1.2 million VND (US$20.50 - US$61.50) for flights on all its domestic routes. Tickets are on sale at travel agents and via Air Mekong's website and customer care centres.

Air Mekong was establish in 2009 by Ha Long Investment and Development Company and is based at Phu Quoc Airport. The existing two private carriers operating in Vietnam are Indochina Airlines and VietJet AirAsia.

The CAAV said there were also a number of other organisations and individuals planning to launch airlines. To qualify, private operators must have a charter capital of at least 500 billion VND (US$26.3 million) to fly internationally and 200 billion VND (US$10.5 million) to launch domestic flights. They must also meet strict aviation and security standards.
