They blocked off access to the east side and (most of) the north side of the north pool today so workers can prepare for the planting of the missing trees, etc. That could be very disappointing to visitors who know victims inscribed on those sides. I half expected them to do this work at night when the memorial is closed anyway. I don't understand why they didn't plant those trees more than two years ago, before the memorial plaza opened.

They are going to replace at least three of the trees that looked bad last summer:

I noticed most of the trees bordering the north pool were slower to grow their leaves this spring than most of the other trees:

Possible causes for the delayed leafing and poor health/death?:

- Anti-icing chemicals put down on the plaza next to the pool in the winter to prevent mist from the pool from freezing on the plaza.
- Chemicals (to prevent algae, etc.) in the pool water, which blows onto the plaza.
- Too much water. (Probably not likely given that these are swamp white oaks.)

I actually find it amazing that more plaza trees haven't had to be replaced by now. At my university about three dozen trees (about 15 to 20 feet tall) were planted this winter near a new library. The other day I counted six oak trees that have already died. They grew new leaves, which then suddenly died and fell off.

4 new trees have arrived which are waiting on Greenwich Street to be placed..

I expect a lot more to come in the next days to go in along the north pool and along Fulton Street, possibly also some along West Street (the southern end already seems prepared)

edit: already 10 trees!

27 new trees have been placed along Fulton Street and around the north pool! 3 old (ill) ones have been taken out and been replaced.

The fence is now reconfigured so that it includes the memorial pavilion and a large part of the NE corner, however, this part is still closed for visitors by a less massive fence.
So it seems like the containers in the NE part will remain for some more time, only the rest will be open together with the museum in two weeks..

The work along West Street is also pretty far, maybe they move the crane there to plant the westernmost line of trees there.

Possibly the large crane is also used to remove the two containers along the southern part of the memorial, the massive fence has already been shifted further south so that the two containers should leave soon so that this part can be opened for visitors as well.

Good progress, with the trees becoming green the plaza will look even nicer, they already started to change color..

I think I see where the "guard shack" will go for turning from West St. into Liberty St.

Fences Coming Down Around Memorial Plaza at the World Trade Center

http://tribecatrib.com/content/fence...d-trade-center
Quote:
In advance of the National Sep*tember 11 Memorial Museum’s ceremonial opening on May 21, the fencing will come down around much of the Memorial Plaza, making for easy access to the site and the lines of visitors at airport-like security a thing of the past.
And for the first time since Sept. 11, 2001, pedestrians will be able to cross West Street at street level between the World Trade Center site and Battery Park City.
Pedestrians will also be able to walk along Liberty Street, all the way from Broadway to West Street. Fulton Street from Broadway, however, will remain closed.
Later in the year there will be changes to the fence line on Vesey Street at Church Street that will provide additional space for the masses of pedestrians in that area to pass through.

Planting trees on West Street tonight. (Literally, they have 2 northbound lanes closed and there's actually a tree sitting in middle of the road! )
