It looks as if most of the fencing around the South Pool facing 4WTC and the VSC are coming down tonight...they are also cleaning the South Pool in preparation for the dedication of the museum finally opening next week I'm guessing

No. Today is the dedication ceremony for it. It opens to the public May 21st.

I see on the Earthcam there's a LOT of security, which is expected.

A throwback to what the Memorial looked like two and a half years ago in December 2011:

All fences have been taken down and for the first time since 9/11, pedestrians can now freely walk to and from WFC to the WTC by crossing West St. The Memorial (not Museum) will now be 24/7 since the fences are removed.

Guess I'll visit the site on Friday after I get off work.

But at last, another page closed on the site. Still a long road ahead!

Wow, the museum is beautiful! I'd love to visit it some day soon.

Some of the twisted metal looks like an art installation. They really have that sad poetic feel.

I made a rough outline of the new fence perimeter in red (please alert me of any glaring inaccuracies):

I wonder what's coming down next. Probably the fences around 1WTC, I'd conjecture.

Yes. Then I think we'll see the area around the VSC next, maybe towards the end of next year.

Looking at the webcam of the memorial, I noticed that nearly all the trees directly surrounding the north pool are growing their leaves much later than the other trees on the memorial plaza. They also don't seem to have grown as much as the other trees over there. It can't be a coincidence and it also happened last year if I recall correctly, so the conditions for those trees must not be very ideal for some reason. Maybe someone can explain this?

Congratulations, NYC for this great achievement. The museum is beautiful, the memorial is beautiful, and the towers are beautiful. This is truly a beautiful memorial, and it is very moving. Today the memorial is looking beautiful.

Also, the time lapse is AMAZING. I don't know how to embed, so I'm just going to post a link.

I'm not sure about the other trees, but the ones on the eastern and northern borders were planted more recently due to the prior fence obstruction, weren't they?

I noticed this last year, and they did just replace three of the trees next to the north border. See this post:

http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpo...postcount=2062

My speculation then (and now) as why these trees aren't thriving:

- Anti-icing chemicals put down on the plaza next to the pool in the winter to prevent mist from the pool from freezing on the plaza. (The wind seems to blow a lot more water out of the north pool than it does the south pool.)
- Chemicals (to prevent algae, etc.) in the pool water, which blows onto the plaza.
- Too much water. (Probably not likely given that these are _swamp_ white oaks.)

Oh, and those oak trees that I mentioned that lost their leaves prematurely (and "died") last spring at my university: They regrew a second set of leaves in the summer, but they were smaller and somewhat deformed. This spring they look better, though there are quite a few dead small branches.
