Does anybody know, where the big left panels around the central void will go?

some things to look forward to in the 1st quarter coming from the very late 3rd quarter report

Complete Installation of Two Sides of the Bronze Nameplates in the North Fountain
Installation of the Bronze Nameplates and their supporting structures will begin in early 2011. These plates, which will record the names of the victim’s of 9/11/01 and 2/26/93, will be etched and backlit from within the parapet housing. A glycol system will also be installed to keep temperature of the metal regulated at times. The Port Authority has been coordinating with the 9/11 Memorial Foundation, who is closely overseeing this project.

Installation of the Large Major Museum Artifacts in the Museum Area
This milestone represents the installation of large artifacts recovered after 9/11, including a FDNY Fire Engine, a NYPD Police Car and a taxicab. These artifacts follow the “Last Column” and “Vesey Street Staircase” (also known as the “Survivor’s Staircase”) which have already been placed within the Museum’s walls. Given their size, all of these artifacts must be placed before the Memorial Plaza is permanently closed given that they are too large to fit in the Museum’s freight elevators. The Memorial Foundation may wait until the 2nd Quarter to place some of these artifacts.

• Begin Installation of Pavilion Curtain Wall

The glass and metal cladding, representing the “skin” of the Pavilion structure, will begin to be installed during this period. Once complete, it will allow interior finish work to begin in the Pavilion.

First Name Plates Installed at 9/11 Memorial
01/11/2011

When the 9/11 Memorial opens later this year, over 150 bronze panels incised with the names of every one of the nearly 3,000 victims of the 2001 and 1993 WTC terror attacks will surround the two waterfalls that flow into the Memorial pools. This week we witnessed the very first of these panels being installed on site, coincidentally 7 years to the day since the Memorial design by Michael Arad was selected. This marked an important transitional moment — this massive construction project is now personal, as it bears the names of those who perished here.

Every single detail of the Memorial name panels has been carefully considered and refined, from the exact spacing of the letters, to the organization of the names, to the look, touch and feel of the finished panel. In order to ensure that the focus remains on the individuals who lost their lives instead of the panel design, the installation has to be flawless. Each of the six foot-long angled panels has to align perfectly with the others, so that each side of the pools is completely straight and level. Also, a customized system will make them equally impactful whether it's day or night and hot or cold. Each panel comes with a state-of-the-art lighting system that will illuminate the panels after dark, and each has to tie into the complex glycol heating and cooling system below to ensure that visitors can touch and feel the panels whether it is 10 degrees below, or 110 degrees above. Years of intense collaboration between the architect and fabricators have gone into ensuring that this Memorial is powerfully simple.

We followed architect Michael Arad as he witnessed this huge moment in the realization of his project. As the metal workers lowered the first panel into place, Michael and everyone present was quiet, solemn, and visibly moved. An idea had become an object, and that object was now becoming a Memorial. Finally, the nearly 3,000 victims of 9/11, more than half of which were never recovered, have a resting place.

@wild_heart: wrong thread?!?

Decking of the arches progressed quite a lot the last days, so soon they will be able to continue with the memorial above that area. Unfortunately new snow came last night..

Another perspective, taken by daveskaff, a few days old:

The site will look better in the spring (it already looks great). But with the trees blooming and no snow. It will look fantastic!

A crane is lifting something huge near the hole west of the north pool, probably an artifact for the museum.

LOL, 4th picture. Reward of US$5,000 if found anyone smoking on site. Heh, heh. Want the reward? Stay there and watch people smoking then catch the person.

9/11 Sphere to Be Evicted From Battery Park

The sculpture, which survived 9/11,
has to leave its temporary home
in Battery Park by this fall.

LOWER MANHATTAN — The World Trade Center sphere may be banished to storage for several years while the Port Authority finds it a new home, sources told DNAinfo this week.

The Fritz Koenig sculpture, which once anchored the World Trade Center plaza and was damaged but not destroyed on 9/11, is getting kicked out of its temporary home in Battery Park later this year and has nowhere to go.

Many 9/11 family members, who see the sphere as a symbol of resilience, had hoped the sculpture would return to the heart of the World Trade Center site.

But the Port Authority and the 9/11 memorial foundation have objected, saying that the dented, 25-foot-tall sculpture would be out of place there, said Michael Burke, a 9/11 family member who is leading the charge to bring the sphere back to the site.

Instead, the Port Authority’s latest idea is to bounce the sphere over to the future Liberty Park, a small, triangular green space south of the 9/11 memorial, Burke and another source said.

Liberty Park, though, won’t open until at least 2013, after an underground vehicle security center is built beneath it, leaving a gap of several years when the sphere might have to go into storage, a source familiar with the Port Authority’s position said.

In addition to the timing problem, Burke said it makes no sense to permanently install the sculpture so far from its original location.

"It’s become an icon because it was in that place," said Burke, whose brother, FDNY Capt. William F. Burke, was killed on 9/11. "Why not put it back where it belongs?"

Placing the sculpture in Liberty Park would create the false impression that it sustained damage on 9/11 in that exact location, said Burke, 54, a Riverdale resident.
Burke said he has spoken to 9/11 Memorial officials about placing the sphere between the waterfalls in the Twin Towers footprints, but they did not want any 9/11 artifacts on the tree-dotted plaza, Burke said.

"You don’t choose design over history and truth," Burke said. "You’re conveying a falsehood by putting [the sphere in Liberty Park]. It robs it of its meaning."

Officials at the 9/11 Memorial referred questions to the Port Authority, which did not immediately comment. The Battery Conservancy did not respond to a request for comment.

Warrie Price, president of the Battery Conservancy, told DNAinfo late last year that the sphere would have to leave Battery Park by fall 2011, as the long-awaited reconstruction of the park moves into its final phase.

The sphere’s potential move to Liberty Park has received some support in the downtown community.

"I think it’s a good idea," said Julie Menin, chairwoman of Community Board 1, who added that she heard the move was likely, but that no final decision had been made. "Having it in Liberty Park is a symbol of how we’ve been able to move on."

Catherine McVay Hughes, chairwoman of CB1’s World Trade Center Redevelopment Committee, said her biggest concern is that the sphere find a "respectful resting place" somewhere in lower Manhattan.

"We feel like the sphere," Hughes said of residents who survived the attack. "We made it through, but we got a little beat up in the process."
