^ Those two "boxes" are the West Vent Structures. One of them houses a vent for the south PATH tubes. both of them are vent shafts for the Memorial & Museum, they also include elevators and emergency stairs. Both will have a rainwater collection system on top.

^It'll be interesting to see what the final cladding will look like, what with that funky angular framework going up. Anybody seen any renderings yet?

Is this stairway from Otie's pics the 'escape' stair that used to access the plaza opposite WTC 7 ? I heard they were going to incorporate it into the memorial somewhere.......

The narrow part on the left side of the column is the "surivor stairs". People will not be able to walk on it, it will be flanked by stairs on one side and an escalator (out of view on the left) on the other side.

Well I hope they make sure everyone can tell it's not a staircase to be used...

The last and only time I used it way back in 2000 it had a stair with escalator beside as is often the case. The entire unit stripped of the escalator was intact in it's original location when I last visited NY back in Sept 2007. I think visitors would like to be able to use the stairway as part of the experience of the memorial.

Hmmm, I thought they may have the abstract window at the corner on the south side. It is interesting the concept where the angled mass of the building is like the towers falling with the new windows ( holes ) accurate to the actual external walls of the memorial and original WTC yet the ribbed vertical design has been rotated through 180 deg so subliminal messages show but not as a full reproduction of the impact areas but familiar features overlaid....if you can follow what I mean ? The long stripes give a feeling of great length where if vertical would not convey the soaring towers. Till now I never realised how important this structure is to the entire memorial.

@Swiddle & Otie: did they add some washing-up liquid to get rid of algae?!

Interesting info from http://gothamist.com/2011/06/27/excl...e.php#photo-14

"A view of the south pool, which is being finished. The designers felt the original color of the pool was too light, so the base is being finished with darker panels. The pool should have water again in a few weeks."(Jake Dobkin/Gothamist)

So the second layer of darker panels was not planned from the beginning..
