They look cheap. At least in a few years after the trees grow to mature size they'll hide them. Won't help during winter or fall when the leaves fall off though.

I don't get it. There's no way that's actually the cladding. Looks like some kind of protective covering.

It looks like some sort of fly screen/mosquito netting.

Some pictures seem to look ok and some seem to look dreadful, it looks all battered. While I think this is the best sort of cladding for these they could of spent s little more time on the detail of them. Perhaps the Walls could be covered with a climbing plants?

I HIGHLY doubt that's the actual cladding.

I dunno if this has been discussed here, but does anyone know what the deal is with the 12 holes forming a square around the central void of the South Pool? It seems likely that it's just drainage, but I keep wondering about it because there is already drainage around the void (basically right around its perimeter) and no such drains ever appeared in these locations in the North Pool. I know it's unlikely but it would sure as hell be a cool surprise if they turned out to be spot beams that would shoot up into the sky (perhaps even through a layer of water), allowing for the Tribute in Lights to continue each anniversary.

Also, my gut tells me that the "screening" around the west structures probably are the final covering, even though it looks god awful. There are two reasons: 1.) What would possibly be the purpose of adding temporary screening? What are they trying to protect? The concrete from mosquitos? Why also would it be grey? 2.) They structures have to be completed on schedule by September 11th, which is less than three months away. They already got a late start on the cladding for the vent structures (compared to, say, the pavillion), but there's no way that this late in the game they would just be now setting up some kind of temporary anything around the structures, only to remove it and begin with the final cladding. It's crunch time. Anything going up now has to be final.

I think something similar was done in the north pool.

South pool now:

North pool on June 1st:

Whatever they are, they will probably be covered up.

Hmm, maybe its leave were devoured by an infestation of caterpillars or other insects and it's growing them back? That seems improbable, but I can't think of any else more likely.

screening, as the name suggests, is like cladding, only in screen form. and i retract my previous statement in which i suggested the screens were only temporary. the more i think about it, the more i question from an economic perspective why they would chooses to cover a concrete vent in expensive cladding when simple screens are so much cheaper.

Mate....with all this planning and design those screens can't be the final product!!!!! As for tribute lights through water ? OK the idea sounds ok but water would diffuse any idea of what we have been used to seeing over the past decade. We are all anxious to see it finished and I am sure it will be wonderful......and respectful of it's purpose. I am on the far side of the planet, the world is watching....and waiting.

There are lots of possibilities of what function the screens have. Probably we will now soon what de final look will be. But I think that they maybe have this mash netting as a base for some green plants that can grow around the building. It makes it a green structure and it could sit better in the Park concept. I only don't know the name of such plant in english, the dutch name is "klimop" or "klimroos" like a rose plant that grows around the structure.

I don't think the screens are temporary, that makes no sense. But I hope and think that they are going to add something to it, because it would not have been necessary to install such a massive steel construction for those lightweight screens..

From a distance (earthcam) the screens don't look bad, but from a closer distance

edit: nice shot by in.formed on flickr..

Is the coach park on the former deuche bank site going to be underground? And then the ground floor area will be available for future skyscraper development?

I hope the nasty foam that collects at the center of the inner void is either a result of the type of testing being done, or is something that can be easily fixed.
