What do you think? This is eventually to be a public park.

The idea is that the water flows continuously into dark voids to represent the continued flow of hope despite the dark events that took place here. At least, that is the best I can summarize the architect's explanation. The void never fills, representing the emotional void that can never be filled.

I hope one day the metal security fence will be replaced with something less 'Area 51'

Once all the construction is done the fences will come down and it will be open access.

Seriously? But don't you have to pay for park access? It's hard to enforce payment on a non-fenced area. Or will there not be a price for visiting the park/memorial?

I dont think that there will be a charge for the memorial. It could be considered insulting to the victims.

The museum will be the money-raker here. In a few years you will indeed be able to walk right off the street into the park.

But what about bomb risks? Isn't there an airport style security checkpoint before you can enter?

I think there is now, but the park will eventually be open. There will be concrete barriers around the park and the towers to block truck/car bombs. NYPD doesn't anticipate any suicide bombings at the site, but they have cameras and scanners that can detect explosives all over lower Manhattan. In addition, there will be a plethora of security features you and I will never know about.

Remember that one of the primary goals here is to reintegrate the WTC into the urban fabric of the surrounding city. Airport style security would completely defeat that point.

There are strips of grass on the west side of the site, but that's it I believe. Most of the "ground" at the memorial is the same material you see in the photos (does anyone here know what exactly is being used for the pavers?)

Peter Walker (the landscape architect) wanted to create a quite and peaceful space, the using of monotonous and repetitive materials help fulfill this vision, this same vision was shared by Michael Arad and was because of that the Sweet gum trees surrounding the Memorial Glade were scrapped.

All pavers, benches and cobblestones are made from the same type of granite (excluding of course the ones that will be at the sidewalks).

Most of the grass is concentraded at the Memorial Glade and at the northwestern corner, while other strips being spread all over the plaza.

Why is this structure taking so long to be completed? I thought it was going to open on september 11, 2012.

Will all that ugly junk facing the WFC be removed? Like, the NYPD shacks?
I hope there will be a simple sidewalk on all 4 sides and no ugly fence.

They moved barricades and fencing yesterday & today. Looks like those trailers might be moved anyday now.
