when the construction is all finished, will their still be the glass walls and airport security to get in? couldn't imagine this being a popular casual park if it is.

Apparently the park itself will be completely open, but the museum will have security.

Truth is current plans are still vague, the Memorial park will be open to the streets for sure, but the fact that the NYPD wants to convert this megablock into a secured area against certain types of transportation vehicles makes the whole "open" feeling thing compromised.

There is work going on in the NW portion of the plaza. Looks like they are FINALLY laying down the membrane. Normally I'm asking other people to calm down and be patient, but it has literally been over a year of delays with several false starts.

It's interesting that they started laying the membrane on a Saturday evening/night and are continuing on a Sunday morning. Will another layer of concrete go on top of the membrane, or will the pavers be placed directly on it?

Good question, I forgot. I think they already have two layers of concrete out there with high density foam panels sandwiched between. I know that the pavers rest on a thin layer of sand and then have sand spread over them to fill the spaces between. This might be the last step before the sand layer, but I honestly can't remember.

And what's with the magenta-colored stuff that's all over the membrane now? I'm guessing it's dye to check for leaks. If so, I wonder why it's magenta instead of the green that they have used in the past?

Not sure if there's any reason, it's not the first time we see this color around the site. They even have it in blue.

is it possible they are starting to prepare to finish the north-east corner. Also looks like they are placing the sidewalk on the west side and started on the south side of the memorial.

this is unrelated, but since 5 wtc was canceled, are there any plans of what to do with that site?

It'll probably just become green space for the foreseeable future.

WTC arts center to get cash infusion

January 31, 2013 | 9:05 am by Amanda Fung
"A performing-arts center will be coming to the World Trade Center site after all. The Lower Manhattan Development Corp. is expected to vote Thursday on giving the organization behind the proposed center $1 million to hire staff and develop a building plan, according to The Wall Street Journal. The approval would reverse a September decision to withhold the money needed to jump start the project.

The Lower Manhattan Development Corp., which was created after the Sept. 11 terrorists attacks to rebuild lower Manhattan, said it now has a better sense of the scope and cost of the project. The Frank Gehry-designed center would include a 1,000-seat theater, a 200-seat theater, rehearsal space and a restaurant. Up until now, the center has been in limbo. In recent months, representatives of the art center have been pushing the development corporation to release the money claiming they have reduced the cost of the project. Last year, the estimated cost of the project was $450 million."

The sooner that ugly temporary entrance is gone and a modern PAC is in place, the sooner the WTC site will become more inviting.

That won't happen until late 2015. Once the hub opens on late 2014-beginning of 2015, the NTA will be dismantled and final phase of VSC will continue to connect to Tower 1 loading docks. Then the PAC can move forward.

NTA= North Temporary Access
VSC= Vehicle Security Center
PAC= Performing Arts Center

An excavator is working on the southeastern part of the memorial and emptying the spots where trees will be placed in the (near?!) future!

Best view is with this cam:

edit: also visible with the KPI TV cam which has cleared up a little, three holes are already excavated!

They've also made a lot of progress on the bollards on Liberty Street (south side) too. There almost all the way to the Greenwich St intersection.
