Just stumbled upon this on http://www.lowermanhattan.info/news/...nts_26924.aspx which agrees with my assumption above that the northbound lanes will be shifted soon..

West Street Promenade Improvements Ahead

As construction on the west side of the World Trade Center (WTC) enters its final phases, the New York State Department of Transportation (SDOT) is now taking steps towards Promenade South Segment 2 project completion. In an October Community Board 1 meeting, SDOT project managers shared what work is ahead in the effort to improve West Street (Route 9A), one of Manhattan's busiest traffic corridors.

Working with the Port Authority, SDOT is beginning removal of the Vesey Street Pedestrian Bridge, which closed on October 7th and was replaced by the street-level pedestrian crosswalk across West Street. The Port will continue removing the bridge in sections over the next few months, and soon SDOT will shift the northbound lanes of West Street to their permanent position beside the WTC site. With the Vesey Bridge removed, SDOT can begin building West Street median. The Port also will continue the streetscape around 1 WTC, where Fulton Street is being reconstructed above the future West Concourse, part of the WTC Transportation Hub, along with the tower's frontage on the other three sides.

SDOT's primary focus through the end of this year and into 2014 is rebuilding the West Street frontages outside the World Financial Center (WFC) towers. Work is expected to start soon outside 1 WFC, from Albany to Liberty, and in the new year, crews will expedite construction moving northward to Vesey. The West Street pedestrian and bikeway also will be restored, though the timeline has not yet been determined.

The hatch over the museum is open again and there's a big crane taking stuff in or out. Anyone have details?

Just curious, but how many total trees in the memorial plaza are there?

Looks like West Street northbound traffic was switched over to the new roadbed.

Here's a follow-up to my post below from June 2nd. The trees in the red box grew a second set of leaves. The trees at my university did the exact same thing: They grew new leaves in the spring then suddenly dropped ALL of them, and then they grew a second set of smaller, deformed leaves. (I will keep and eye on them to see if they come back next spring.)

This is from September 7th and shows some green:

I've noticed that the trees near the north pool, as well as the ones that were planted this summer, have been the first to start changing color this fall. I suppose stressed trees are the last to grow new leaves in the spring and the first to change in the fall. Hopefully all these trees will get hardier over the next couple years.

It will be interesting to see when they plant the trees that have yet to be placed next the the NE corner of the north pool, and if they can do so without blocking access that section of names. Perhaps they will plant them at the same time they plant the ones along Fulton Street. And maybe they'll remove the shed next to the north pool since I doubt there is any danger of objects falling from 1WTC now. (It would be a good time to replace the sickly trees too, if they deem it necessary to replace them.)

It appears that two trees next to the north pool have died (red box) and possibly a third one (yellow box). The next three in the same row as the red box don't look healthy. No trees died last year that I know of. One tree next to the south pool died year before last and was replaced.

I noticed most of the trees bordering the north pool were slower to grow their leaves this spring than most of the other trees:

Possible causes for the delayed leafing and poor health/death?:

- Anti-icing chemicals put down on the plaza next to the pool in the winter to prevent mist from the pool from freezing on the plaza.
- Chemicals (to prevent algae, etc.) in the pool water, which blows onto the plaza.
- Too much water. (Probably not likely given that these are swamp white oaks.)

I actually find it amazing that more plaza trees haven't had to be replaced by now. At my university about three dozen trees (about 15 to 20 feet tall) were planted this winter near a new library. The other day I counted six oak trees that have already died. They grew new leaves, which then suddenly died and fell off.

The trees really add a sense of peace and comfort and a way to escape the hustle and bustle going on around the site.

Over the past week or so they have been filling the hole that has been next to the Pavilion forever:

I think this colored liquid is used to check the waterproofing, it has been used many times in other parts of the site before

They still have to remove all those temporary containers and plant a couple of trees there, my guess is that they open the northeast corner when this is completed together with the museum next spring.
