Signage

Yeah but officially the green sign is for emergency exits. So those would also point at exits which can't be used under normal circumstances.
The thing is, the signs before this one(from 2009) did have some pictograms (like an exit pictogram) on them.
Me, and people on the local Dutch SSC forum were hoping with the renovation of the East Line coming up in about 2/3 years or so and the North/South Line opening in 2017 the metro system would get one cohesive clear signage system/branding. Right now the metro signage is kind of a mess.

We now have:
The original 1975 one: pic1 pic2
The 1995 one: pic1 pic2
The 2009 one: pic1 pic 2
The 2017 one: I've heard that they might not even use the new signage on the new North/South Line. So this is what it might end up looking like: pic1 pic2

What you see in my previous post is the signage of the national/multi-regional branding of the Randstad area's (Amsterdam, Haarlem, Rotterdam, The Hague, etc.) Bus Rapid Transit Systems and some trams and light rails (in the future also the metros). Except with a blue background in stead of red to make it more Amsterdam-ish. For that branding they even developed a whole set of pictograms.. which they then didn't use... on the signs the city's metro underneath the busiest station in Amsterdam, if not the Netherlands, where there are tourists and non-Dutch speakers everywhere.

Time for an update.

Rokin

Last parts of the suspension construction got removed.

A look underneath the plaforms.

Nice view of the parking decks and the platform underneath them.

Vijzelgracht

View from below the utility spaces and the ticket hall. In the front of the picture you can see space for switches.

Ticket hall and builders. You can see daylight coming in at the left, the fare gates will cross this picture horizontally, and right will be the escalators going down.

They filled the floor with concrete. They will build the platforms on top.

320 Degrees view of Vijzelgracht.

De Pijp

You can see the big cut out sections in the floor for the long escalators.

Some tram news:

The screens in some of the Combino trams finally show travel information, like most of the buses do nowadays. They only used them for advertising and infomercials before.

They're also testing these new screens with information.

They're planning on adding these or LED matrix information panels to about 700 stops.
We now have these(↓) at some of the busier stops, but real-time info is generally severely lacking.

Here some nice pics from Mojito of the bus platform, still to be built 'IJhal' shopping mall underneath, the auto tunnel underneath that and the metro station even further below, at Central Station.

New update from North to South

Noord

They've started with the station roof!

There's a live webcam HERE and more renderings HERE.

Central Station

They've placed the final arches at the bus platform. Now we have to wait for the glass to appear.

A quick walk through the emergency exit to the metro tunnel near Central Station.

Rokin

HERE you can see how ridiculously big the Rokin station entrance is going to be. (Sorry can't embed it)

Vijzelgracht

Yes you're seeing that right. Those are *gasp* round corners.

The southern ticket hall seen from the east.

The vertical beams got their final paint coating.

De Pijp

These are the proposed buildings above the entrances of De Pijp station (yes they are 2 different buildigs). Many have complained that they don't fit in well in the neighbourhood

Finishing up around the emergency exit on Scheldeplein.

Do they have any news on the second phase of Noordzuidlijn (A'dam Zuid-Amstelveen-Schipol)?

They are never going to do Zuid-Amstelveen-Schiphol. They might do Zuid-Schiphol, they should do Zuid-Amstelveen(-Uithoorn).

The new subway line that is being built underneath the city of Amsterdam has entered the final stage of construction. It will be completed in 2017, adding eight new stations to the system.

Last weekend the general public had the opportunity to walk through the tunnels one last time.

A walk from Rokin to Vijzelgracht (1/2), May 24th, 2014

In the weekend of May 24th and 25th, the Noord/Zuidlijn offered the last possibility to visit the tunnels before the finishing process of the tunnels (a phase which will last around three years) will start. I did two tours, from Rokin station to Vijzelgracht station and from De Pijp station, again to Vijzelgracht station.

I will copy my four updates from the Dutch forum with some short translations of the remarks I made there.

1. Rokin, streetview. Entrance to the construction site.

2. Future parking decks between street and station.

3.

4.

5.

6. The platform can be recognized.

7. View up to the future southern entrance (Spui/Munt).

8. The walk started on the track which will be used by metrotrains from North to South.

9.

10. The difference in ceiling heights is caused by the parkingdecks and ramps above it.

11. View to the north (Centraal).

12. After a small round through the station we entered the eastern tunnel, which will be used by metrotrains from South to North.

13. This must be the small missing section between the station and the tunneling shield. It was constructed after the excavation process by freezing the soil around.

14. Looking back at the Rokin station.

15. Tunnel to Vijzelgracht.

16. Cross-connection between the two tunnels under Muntplein.

17. The Munt Tower is just above our heads! We are standing on 33 m under street level at this point, the deepest point of the line.

18. From there on we continue to Vijzelgracht.

(to be continued)

A walk from Rokin to Vijzelgracht (2/2), May 24th, 2014

1. Entering Vijzelgracht station from the north (Rokin)

2. Joint between the station and the tunnel.

3. Looking back at the eastern tunnel.

4. This spacious "room" will be used for a switch between the tracks in the separated tunnels.

5.

6. Vijzelgracht station.

7.

8. The huge inclined wall above the future northern entrance.

9. Platform Vijzelgracht.

10. Looking up at the future northern entrance. The six-story building under the future escalators will be used for installations.

11. The ceiling of Vijzelgracht station will be at one level. A possible parking in the big space above it will be an automatic parking. But the construction of it is not sure yet.

12. The Amsterdam paramedics were prepared for this huge event (around 19.000 visitors in two days).

13. If evacuation was needed, it would be by crane, through the temporary holes in the floors.

14. Looking up to the future southern entrance. Here also a six-story building for installations.

15. An identical inclined wall.

16. Looking down to the platform from the temporary (and heavily shaking) staircase.

17.

18. And then we were back at street level. Our first visit to Vijzelgracht is completed!

(to be continued)

A walk from De Pijp to Vijzelgracht (1/2), May 24th, 2014

1. Construction site at Ferdinand Bolstraat.

2. In Dutch, we call it "Stempels", I don't know the English translation. Jack Post? Formwork? Building Props?

3. Future hall of the station. The left wall will be used for an artwork made by the Argentinian artist Amalia Pica.

4. Inclined "stempels" indicate the location of the future escalators.

5.

6.

7.

8. We entered the upper tunnel (the tunnels are positioned above each other due to the narrow size of the Ferdinand Bolstraat). It is situated under the Ferdinand Bolstraat. The deeper and western tunnel runs under the buildings of De Pijp.

9. Tunnel to Vijzelgracht.

10. Emergency exit at Jacob van Campenstraat.

11. For the second time this day we approach Vijzelgracht station.

(to be continued)

A walk from De Pijp to Vijzelgracht (2/2), May 24th, 2014

1. Entering Vijzelgracht station. For the second time today.

2. The huge inclined wall above the southern entrance.

3. Looking back at the eastern tunnel.

4. The temporary staircase was the exit for both the visitors from De Pijp and Rokin. We had to walk through the entire station before we reached this stairs.

5.

6.

7.

8. At the northside of the station the visitors from De Pijp merged with the visitors from Rokin. .

9. The position of the future staircases is already visible.

10. For the second time we reached street level.

This was for now the last time that it was possible to visit the tunnels and stations. The finishing of the stations, tunnels and tracks doesn't allow space for events like this anymore. If everything goes well, in three years (estimated opening date: October 2017) we could take a ride! Finally!

New update from North to South

This is the machine they'll be using to transport materials into the tunnels/over the rails. Can be used on either rail and on flat surfaces.

Construction of the new lifts at Central Station. The big hole will be covered with a glass roof so daylight will be able to reach the metro ticket hall.

Three escalators have been installed at the southern metro entrance at Central Station. Picture taken towards Damrak/Dam Square.

Making holes in the roof at Rokin station for the parking garage entrance

The Vijzelgracht station concrete work is finished. Next they will install technical equipment and then the interior finishes and furniture.
Found a new render showing a ventilation shaft and a lift entrance. Looking from South to North.

At De Pijp station you can see the southern entrance area is coming along nicely. There'll be a lift and escalators here. They'll build a building on top later.

At Scheldeplein the cover of the emergency exit got installed

Just a couple of hundred meters south the new escalators for Europaplein station (in front of RAI Convention Center) got installed. Won't be in use until 2017.

At Centraal Station

The artwork for Central Station has been chosen. "The Weather Engine" by David Claerbout.

It's dynamic. So the weather will reflect the weather outside and the character/man in the image will reflect what's going on outside (he'll be gone in the summer holiday, maybe be dressed up in orange during King's Day, etc.) Here you can see some of the other (already rejected/chosen) proposals for artwork in other stations.

The first entrance that got its new LED lighting

It is great to see the project taking shape, considering 4 years ago or so (I think) they almost cancelled it when it was put under revision due to cost overruns.
