Only 1 line of full metro in 2002, as far as I can remember...

Is it still like that?

I am not talking about light rail/trams!

Yup, it's still like that. There are two lines, actually: one going from the central station underground to the Bijlmer area, where it splits in two: one branch to Gein and the other one to Gaasperplas; the other line forming a semi-circular line that doesn't go into the city center, and that runs completely above ground. If you visited Amsterdam by plane, and went from the airport to the city by train, you should have seen the metro tracks and stations (and some trains, too) at your right hand, where the line runs parallel to the main railway tracks.

But: they're building a second underground line...

Will there also be new trains? The trains that are driving now aren't the most beautiful

Een snelle update van vanmiddag:

What about some update pics from the Centralstation. Just came back from Amsterdam and it seems like there was a lot of construction going on there.

The North-South line is 9,7km long. The metro will stop at 8 stations. The minium lenght from station to station is 1,2km. The metro begins above-ground at 'Buikslotermeerplein'. After that the metro will go in a deepened barge, and after station 'Johan van Hasseltweg' it will go underground and under the water from the 'IJ'. The lenght of the underground part is 7,3km. At the 'Ring A10' between station 'Europaplein' and station 'Zuid/WTC' it will come above-ground. Here will the North-South line connect with the normal metro system.

The North South Line is a nice project and it will facilitate enough passengers.
But what will happen with the existing tramlines that run from Amsterdam Central Station to Amsterdam South?

Just wondering, what are your fare gates and fare payment systems like? It was announced today that Vancouver's transit system will have fare gates by next year as well as a smart card payment system. The new systems will be modelled after Amsterdam and London.

thx.

Amsterdam underground delayed again as costs soar

AMSTERDAM, April 17 (Reuters) - A new metro line under Amsterdam will not be completed until at least 2015, four years late, as costs have soared due to the challenges of propping up historic houses, the waterlogged city said on Thursday.

The city council said in a report it now predicted the "North-South" line to link northern suburbs to a business district in the south passing under picturesque canals in the centre will cost more than 2 billion euros ($3.19 billion).

The project which started in 2003 was originally due to cost about 1.5 billion euros and be completed in 2011. It has turned the city's central station and many of its main thoroughfares into unsightly building sites and caused traffic chaos.

One of the main causes of the delay is the difficulty engineers are having boring through poles laid centuries ago to prop up a city built on marshy ground. To prevent houses subsiding, the ground is being frozen before drilling.

The city admitted more delays could be possible and said it had decided to increase compensation to residents living near building sites to an average of 115 euros a month from 60 euros.

"This is a particularly unpleasant message for the city but we must be realistic. We have underestimated this complicated building project too often in the past few years," city alderman Tjeerd Herrema said in a statement.

"The delay is bad for the city. The overcrowded metros in Amsterdam and the jammed-up roads in the whole region show how badly we need the North-South line," he said.

In February, the city announced that the renovation of the Rijksmuseum, home to some of the greatest works by Rembrandt and other Dutch masters, has been delayed again and is not likely to be completed before 2013, also due to soaring costs. (Reporting by Emma Thomasson, edited by Richard Meares)

There will be new trains for the North South line. The oldest trains will most likely also be replaced. I actually like the oldest trains more then the "Amstelveen line" trains, which are more dirty, smaller and have more technical problems. But when the North South line is completed the "Amstelveen line" trains are possibly going to get banned from the old metro tube making their final stop at Spaklerweg.

They are not sure yet and studying on it. The lines that run from South to Central will most like be changed from South to a different destination, but South will get more tramlines. The expectation is that Amstel and Sloterdijk station will also get more tramlines. No more tram congestion in front of the Central Station But it's all study and debate!

Pity the things probably won't stay that clean for long. I do like them, much better than the old ones.

(By the way, did they edit the new Amsterdam subway map into the subway car? Nice touch )

If you want to know what the Amsterdam metro system looks like from the driver's point of view, take a look over here. It's a slideshow that takes you from the underground station Nieuwmarkt to Sloterdijk, and back to Bijlmer/ArenA.
