They look really nice, one of the best works from CAF, well normally they make quite similar trams for every city with some exceptions.

Amsltelveen will get the short stick with N-Z metro line. Today, they have metro service (sort of). In the future, they will get only trams . They should have built a subway line where currently the semi-metro line runs! An elevated metro line, line the ones in the eastern districts.

Well the new tram will probably be faster than the current light rail as many stops are going to be removed. But since there will be much less space inside it will feel cramped. Not a comfort upgrade. They even decided people in mobility scooters can enter no longer.

I honestly would've prefered to see some decent lightrail-stock instead of these trams. These trams look decent for innercity distances, while people have to use them to get from Uithoorn (Not even a suburb of Amsterdam) all the way to Amsterdam South Station and beyond. Make the trams suitable for mobility scooters and create nice and comfy sittingspaces for commuters. Due to this amputation commuters have to transfer more often, therefor make the tram worth the ride.

Amsterdam’s tram network to be overhauled when metro finally launches

Quote:
Amsterdam’s tram network will be overhauled and some routes will disappear or change altogether when the new Noord/Zuid metro comes into service in 2018, the Parool said on Thursday.

The city’s transport company GVB says the metro will carry some two-thirds of all public transport passengers, while the tram’s share of the total will halve.

For example, there will be fewer trams using the Vijzelstraat and Leidsestraat and they will disappear from the De Lairessestraat altogether. Tram 5 to Amstelveen will be re-routed from the main railway station to Westerpark.

The GVB says 80% of passengers will be at their destination more quickly because of the changes, while just 4% will have to switch services more often while en route.

This summer, officials said the metro will open in July 2018, nine months later than the most recent projection.

Although the original budget for the metro was €1.4bn, the final cost is likely to be €3.1bn. Work started in 2002, and was due to end in 2011.

Hi, lovely Dutch people!

I've been living in Amsterdam for a while now, and I am very excited about the Noord/Zuidlijn construction. I have a slightly related request.

This summer I was sightseeing in the center with some friends, and we unexpectedly walked by the Rokin station that was open to the public. They opened up four stations that were under construction just for the day, but it was too late to visit the other three.

We went into the Rokin station and checked it out. There were also three singers (supposedly construction workers or sth, but it might be that they are just entertainers). Anyway, we made a short video of their Noord/Zuidlijn song. We didn't understand all of it, just some words, but it was so hilarious (especially the left guy that always forgets to use the whistle).

Anyway, here is the video. I cannot understand what they're saying exactly, I just pick up a word here and there. Could someone please try and write down the lyrics for me? I would be very grateful. We still sometimes sing that song, but we mostly mumble cause we don't know the words!

Wij zijn ondersteboven, niet te geloven, niet te geloven.
Nee nee nee nee.

It uses a lot of untranslatable words but I tried:

We are upside down [amazed], unbelievable, unbelievable.
No no no no.
We are over our ears, it's no lie, over our ears.
Shortly we can take the quick North South Line.
That's gri-, that's gra-, that's super great.
We don't want to be in traffic jams, in between the cars, the metro is the place to be.

The car is out, that's why I decide: I'll take the metro from Noord to Zuid.
Not on the scooter, not in the cabriolet, not walking all day.
We will take the metro, you should see us by then.
Oh that's great, oh that's great.
We are so crazy about the North South Line.

I remember watching a kids programme about its benefits, I'm not sure when but it was definitely pre 2007. A presenter cycled overland from Central to Zuid and they compared it with a virtual metro journey. Suffice it to say that the target audience of that show have most likely graduated from high school now and the bloody thing still isn't finished.

In 1996 Amsterdam trams looked ugly, the Centraal Station run-down, and the buses very outdated.

Tons of progress made since then.

(Pity the N-S lijn is not going to Schiphol though. It should to all the way to Hoofddorp and they should build 30.000 new housing units extra in Amstelveen)

Yes. Let's build Amstelveen to the brim but send the North South Line to Hoofddorp instead (which, may I remind you, already has a train station).

I think he meant for it to go through Amstelveen to Schiphol and then proceed to Hoofddorp? Correct me if I'm wrong please. Btw, the North-Southline has greater potential to the North. Build it to Purmerend/Zaanstad. That will improve traveltimes and reduce transfers a lot.

Yes, that is what I thought, make the alignment bend in Amstelveen and then send the tunnels under Schiphol on a W-E direction, more or less.

I'm aware Hoofddorp has a railway station. However, service there will never be really metro-like service there due to limitations on the heavily trafficked rail tracks, extending the subway line could pay off.
