It's sort-of-future and sort-of-anachronistic: the train patterns represent service per Dec. 11 of this year, while the metro network already shows the blue line M52 as operational, even though it's not expected to open before Q3 2018...

Above all, it shows M52 operational and M51 to Amstelveen together and this won't happen: if I've correctly understood, going beyond Zuid station will be physically impossible for a M51 train with the NoordZuidljin completed, and therefore - according to the most recent official plan - the metro line will be limited there and the outer section is expected to be fully "converted" in a tramway.

That's only partly true. M51 will be able to continue its current operation, even with M52 operational. However, M52 will only have one tail track at Zuid station, thus limiting the capacity and robustness of this line.

From March 2019 onwards, M51 will indeed be taken off the section between Zuid and Amstelveen Westwijk to be converted to tram (a very sad decision in my opinion; the section should have been converted to full metro standard and linked directly to M52). According to the latest plans, M51 should then run between Centraal Station, Zuid and Isolatorweg, forming an almost complete circle (just the short section between Isolatorweg and Zuid is missing).

So all in all, this network will be a reality, but only between Q3 2018 and Q1 2019 - nine months at best (or worst, depending on how you look at it).

Will thus M52 run at a reduced frequency for almost a year? How much does the "single tracked" terminus impinge on headway and reliability of the new line?

I read about some incompatibility, but I haven't really grasped what the matter was; so thank you for the explanation.

Another question: would it be possible to lay a couple of track between Isolatorweg and Centraal Station in order to make a full-fledged circular route? Or was NoordZuidlijn tunnel built at the same level of the old Oostlijn station, peventing this from ever happening?

No, they actually took an extension of the Oostlijn into account when building the new station for the Noord/Zuidlijn.

The metro definitely needs to be extended from Isolatorweg. The question is where to. You could make a circle line to Central Station, even though there's space constraint and in some ways it doesn't really add enough value, since you will be building along the train corridor. If you then would connect to the current East Line, an East Line extension to the western canal belt and Leidseplein would be made close to impossible.

So another option is to extend from Isolatorweg through the harbour (which will be converted to mixed-use residential) to NDSM (up and coming high density neighborhood) to Noorderpark, or perhaps somewhere else in Noord.

A line from Central to Leidseplein has better value than a closed circle line, so that's something you have to take into account. Plus the fact dat you could easily extend from Noord to Zeeburg/IJburg/Oost and make a bigger circle line, if that is the end goal.

There seems to be a great amount of people in favor of closing the loop between Central and Isolatorweg, but an extension to the North of Amsterdam, so either Noorderpark or Noord, could increase the accessibility of a lot of future developed regions, which are lacking proper public transportation.

Well, they could build a third level at Amsterdam Centraal metro station.

Anyway, closing the ring would allow dismantling stations Lelylaan and reduce the number of IC trains stopping at Sloterdijk, increasing capacity to/from Amsterdam Centraal <=>Schiphol

I support this idea, Ijburg deserves a full subway line as it was promised when they started dredging the area.

But, then, some euphemism like "Sneltram" was the way to go in the 1990s, apparently.

Gosh, it's finally close to completion. I've been waiting for this ever since i studied in amsterdam nack in 2007!! I went to Amsterdam lazt year and surprised it still hasn't finished. Is this the world's slowest metro construction? I know the technical difficulty it faced but stil..

Because of the development in the Overhoeks and adjecent former industrial areas in Amsterdam-North the city is planning to study the costs and necessity of a Sixhaven infill station. The station was scrapped from the plans in 2003 because the low patronage estimates didn't warrant the 15 million euro price tag. However, since the North/South Line has experienced many delays (20 year construction anniversary this year), they will only start looking into it after the line is done and completely up and running (same goes for the underground connections of station hall to the Hudson's Bay department store at Rokin station and metro ticket hall to Central Station), which will be 22 July 2018.

Also buying more ferries (one out of 2 ped/bike options to get to Noord) and a new bridge (very controversial) are on the agenda.

Good news altogether, but why do they need 1.5 years of testing before opening the line in July 2018?

Two subcontractors went bankrupt last year. They picked that date to be safe. From 2012 onwards the date was set at October 2017, and I imagine they didn't want to announce delays once .. or twice more.

Amsterdam public transport to be cash free by 2018

All Amsterdam buses will stop accepting coins and notes from March 26, city transport company GVB said on Monday. Cash will disappear from night buses at the end of January. The bus firm is keen to eliminate cash money because of the risk of bus drivers being robbed. The company wants all public transport – including trams – to be cash free in a year’s time. That, officials admit, is likely to be a major operation. Last year, tram conductors dealt with 8.2 million cash payments. In particular, tourists are likely to try to pay with cash. 254 Share Share Share Tweet Share

I fully agree to ban cash in bus and tram, but in return I'd prefer to see more ticket sale machines on stops, which do accept cash, or at least coins.

^Together with new machines which read debit and credit cards, a new 'service desk' is being tested, replacing the conductor's booth in trams.
