Good news! Glass will be placed in the Noord station train shed through 2018. The original constructor of the special glass went bankrupt earlier and there were some troubles with the constructive steel elements.

View from the bus station.

P+R and railyard on the northern side of the terminus.

The bus station canopies will get vegetation on the roof and they still need to install the glass 'awnings'.

I think the council might anticipate opening the line to December 2017... Maybe.

Everybody is anticipating a opening on 22 July 2018. This is not just a new line opening, this is the biggest timetable change for Amsterdam ever. Most of the tram lines will receive a new route on that day. That's why it is planned at a date quite far ahead, even though construction is almost completely done, this date must be reached.

They could still start operating the new metro line without changing the rest of the network, during off-peak hours, to make sure everything is set for the "big change" in July 2018.

It seems the city council was ultra risk-averse, they did not want to face a final "delay" so they just set up an opening date at least 5 months longer than reasonable at the time they did it.

I agree. They have probably tested as much as the can. However shit happends sometime. Like in Stockholm in Sweden they found out the hard way that if the then new C20 underground trains were heavily loaded near the doors the doors got jammed due to the cars flexing a bit due to the weight. The had tried the trains with passengers and/or dummy weights distributed around the seats and that went fine. Who knows what problems that could happend on a new train and a new line where the passengers act in another way than anticipated?

Anyway, it is a pity there are not further meaningful subway projects in the pipeline after the completion of the new line. Amsterdam is one of these metros that should always have some new heavy subway project going around.

Look at mister public transport genius here .

The main reason they can't is because the east-west tram lines that connect to both metro lines would need higher frequency (many tram lines are crowded as is) for it to even work. And that can only be achieved by changing the tram routes. Having a radically different system only during peak hours is insanity.

Is there a map of the new tram network after the opening of the N-Z line?

Hopeflly skyrocketing real estate prices in Amsterdam lead Amstelveen to take the bit and put some money to make the line a heavy rail / full overground metro, instead of a "super tram".

Better yet, but unrealistic, would be for a monorail or elevated rail line
