Japanese Clothing Retailer Enters RP

Manila Bulletin | Tuesday | January 31, 2012 | 11:34pm

MANILA, Philippines — Uniqlo, Japan’s number one clothing retail chain, is investing $2.49 million for the establishment of three stores initially with the first store slated to open in June this year at the Mall of Asia.

Geraldine Sia, general manager of the Fast Retailing Philippines, the joint venture company of Uniqlo Japan and SM Retail Inc., said at the signing of certificate of registration with the Board of Investments for their retailing venture there will be three Uniqlo stores to open this year.

The first store will open in June in MoA, the location of the two others have yet to be announced. The BoI said that each store has a required minimum investment of $830,000 Category B under the Retail Trade Law.

Trade and Industry undersecretary Adrian S. Cristobal Jr. said that Uniqlo is the 13th foreign retailer that registered under the Retail Trade Law in a span of ten years or an average of one foreign retailer annually.

Cristobal, however, said that there is an initiative in Congress to review the 10-year law if it is still relevant with the times.

Uniqlo is the second foreign apparel that the SM Group has brought into the country, the first being Forever 21. Eisuke Sawada of Uniqlo and Cristobal signed the certificate of registration.

On February 9, the group will formally announce its entry in the country. Naoki Otoma, Group Executive Vice President, Fast Retailing Co., Ltd. and Managing Director, UNIQLO Asia & Japan, will grace the event. The opening of the Philippine branch followed the opening of Uniqlo in Thailand. Uniqlo will open more stores in 13 countries worldwide. (BCM)

THE proliferation of retail developments along with an influx of domestic and foreign tourists is turning Metro Cebu into a major retail destination in the South, according to real estate advisory firm CB Richard Ellis (CBRE) Philippines.

CBRE said that with the right push and consistent support from both public and private sectors, Metro Cebu can even become the newest retail destination in Asia.

The firm reported a total of 5.6 million local and foreign tourists visited Cebu from January to November last year.

CBRE noted that 1.32 million of these tourists are international travellers.

With the increasing number of tourists, local and national retail developers are seeing Metro Cebu’s retail business as a growth opportunity.

Local retail players like Prince Warehouse, Metro Gaisano, Gaisano South and Gaisano Capital are no longer alone in Metro Cebu’s retail arena with the expansion of big national retailers such as SM, Robinsons, Rustan’s/Shopwise and Puregold.

"The entry of these big players are a show of confidence in the growth potential of Metro Cebu’s retail sector," CBRE said.

American fashion brand Forever 21 launched its first outlet outside Metro Manila in SM City Cebu in the second half of 2011.

A three-storey mall with 70,000 square meters of gross leasable area called J Centre was also launched in the second half of last year.

CBRE reported that Cebu Holdings, Inc. (CHI), an affiliate of property developer Ayala Land, Inc. (ALI) is embarking on the central stage of Ayala Center Cebu’s expansion within the 9-hectare land inside the Cebu Business Park.

The P3-billion four-level development is said to complete the original full-circle design of the mall.

In addition, two SM Savemore Markets opened in Mandaue last November while SM Consolacion with its 40,000 sqm of gross leasable area is set to open this year.

SM Prime Holdings also launched a P20 billion integrated development project at South Road Properties (SRP) called SM Seaside Complex.

The 30-hectare development will be anchored by a huge shopping mall to be known SM Seaside City Cebu which is about half of the size of the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay, CBRE reported.

Filinvest Land also announced its entry to the Metro Cebu retail business late last year with a retail space project in its 50-hectare new community development in Cebu City’s SRP.

The land development of the 10.6-hectare retail development has started in October last year and the first phase would be completed by the third quarter of 2013.

Metro Cebu is composed of three major cities in Cebu, namely Cebu, Mandaue, and Lapu-Lapu.

Metro Cebu has an aggregate population of roughly 1.5 million and a total land area of 408 square kilometers.

CBRE noted that about 37 percent of Cebu’s population is found in these three major cities.

"With Cebu now becoming known as a major tourist destination, Cebu retailers are directly benefitting from the upsurge in tourist arrivals from shopping requirements as well as increased demand from HORECA (Hotels, Restaurants and Catering Services)," CBRE said.

"This momentum continues to build up as government initiatives are geared towards the growth of investment and tourism of Metro Cebu," the firm added.

I like their men's khaki pants. In HK, it's around HK$250 to 300. Affordable na rin. I'm not sure pagdating dito....

Sweet, Unliqo makes good clothes. It's like a few notches higher in quality than H&M if you ask me.

BYOB - Bring your own bag when shopping in Urdaneta City

GOING GREENER
URDANETA CITY—After opening the first engineered sanitary landfill in the province, this city is bent on further improving waste management by implementing a “Bring Your Own Bag” (BYOB) program to minimize, if not eliminate, the use of plastic bags.

The city council has passed an ordinance on the program, which is now under review by the provincial board.

The ordinance, jointly authored by Councilors Mark Joseph Andrada, Blesildo Sumera and Jennylin Sison, states that “plastic bags are rampantly used as packaging materials here and elsewhere”, and needs to be limited through the promotion of alternative packaging materials that are environment-friendly.

The ordinance also points out that plastic bags and polystyrene plastics (styrofoam), being non-biodegradable materials, clog the city’s canals, creek, rivers and other waterways.

The councilors who authored the ordinance said despite serious effort of the city to segregate compostable and recyclable waste materials, these plastics and other similar materials remain in the waste stream.

With the BYOB campaign, the councilors said the city will hopefully be able to reduce its high operating and maintenance costs on waste management.

The city government encourages the use of bayong (woven bags), katsa (cloth bags), paper bags and other natural materials like banana and taro leaves under the BYOB program.

Once implemented, penalties will range from P500, P2,000 and P5,000 for the first, second and third offenses, respectively.—Eva Visperas

I would like to see more homegrown malls and supermarkets to emerge and multiply.

I want to see more local retailers bring in new and high quality local brands..

After San Miguel took over Petron, they are planning to convert all Treats stores into San Miguel stores.

It's actually a good idea, and SM uses that to snag a few extra bucks from us every Wednesdays if you forgot it.
