Yeah, the government for so long hasn't really addressed the cost of manufacturing. That's what happens when the country lacks a well-developed supply chain plus the staggering costs of power due to economic mismanagement making Philippines less competitive.

Although not all.

All Perfumes, shirts and jeans are still manufactured locally. Only certain items like slippers, watches, shoes are made in China.

On the other hand, if manufacturing is not feasible in this country, why is JG Summit putting up and expanding its heavy industry (manufacturing venture) and light manufacturing ventures here in our country?

JG Summit increases capex budget to P53B

By Zinnia B. Dela Peña (The Philippine Star) Updated March 28, 2012 12:00 AM Comments (0)

MANILA, Philippines - Gokongwei flagship firm JG Summit Holdings Inc. has increased its planned capital spending this year by nearly 80 percent to P52.87 billion, reflecting its bullish stance on the local economy.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange yesterday, JG Summit said most of the programmed capital budget will go to the continued expansion of its real estate, airline and petrochemicals businesses.

Around P13 billion has been earmarked for the development of new malls, residential and office projects under property unit Robinsons Land Corp.

Another P12.5 billion will be used to support Cebu Air’s fleet expansion, nearly three times the P4.22 billion spent a year earlier. The no-frills airline had signed lease agreements for four Airbus A330s as it prepares to extend its reach to new routes such as Europe, United States and the Middle East.

JG Summit Petrochemical Corp. needs around P15.54 billion to finish the development of the country’s first naphtha cracker plant amounting to between $700 million to $800 million. Slated for completion by late 2013, the project will produce 320,000 metric tons of ethylene.

Food unit Universal Robina Corp., meanwhile has set a P4.56-billion capital expenditure program this year mainly to expand its branded consumer food operations. This would involve mainly snack foods production facilities in the Philippines and biscuits production plants in Vietnam and Thailand.

About P390 million has been allotted for Robinsons Bank or more than double the P190 million spent a year before.

JG Summit jacked up its net income 32 percent last year to a record P21.59 billion, buoyed by gains from the sale of its telecom unit.

It booked P13 billion from the divestment of its stake in Digital Telecommunications Philippines Inc. (Digitel) to Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. The landmark deal, valued at P69.2 billion, created a telecommunications giant with a market share of about 70 percent.

This reaffirms SM's blatant disregard for heritage and the environment. I know plenty of shallow-minded people who would prefer malls over trees but...

SM Started The Unthinkable at the Expense of the Trees
April 10, 2012 By Watwatworld

A few hours ago, we shed tears…

After receiving a message that trees were already being cut by SM Employees, we immediately proceeded to SM, it was 12′oclock midnight. When we arrived, a group of young and old were already there trying to talk to the “tree cutters”. From a distance we could hear the sound of numerous “popping” hammers. The entire balcony of SM Baguio was covered with big ply woods. Luneta Hill was also surrounded with big GI Sheets, Ply woods and plastic covers. The SM Guards were armed and kept flashing their flashlights to the protesters.

By 1:00am, we heard heavy machines. There was an excavation going on in front of University of the Cordilleras (UC). The group ran in front of UC and started shouting and begging for the operators of the machines to stop. But nobody listened. Then suddenly, around 20 – 30 SM employees came down the hill and went to the area where Alnus Trees were planted. It was near the front area of COMELEC. When the branches of the Alnus trees started to shake, we knew that was it. The group ran again near the tree cutters and begged and begged and begged but to no avail. When the first Alnus tree fell… we cried. I saw tough young people cry. Some just sat down and started sobbing, some stayed tough but their tears were running down. It was a sorrowful early morning.

After the first tree went down, it was followed by another…then another… The protesters shouted and begged. They “banged” the GI sheets to create noise but no one threw stones. After a few minutes, the police came. They talked to the protesters. I saw some of the youth leaders crying in front of them, explaining what they are doing. With the blessings of the Angels, it seemed that the Police understood them for the time being.

What is very ironic is the timing of the “drainage project” along Gov. Pack Rd. (the road leading to COMELEC and UC). The entire road was closed to traffic. The buses were relocated at the Baguio Convention Center. This move was simultaneous with the massive fencing of the Luneta Hill. People are already speculating that there was indeed a “sweetheart deal” between SM and the City Government.

This issue may end the political careers of some politicians and will leave their names tarnished forever. Unless they do some “pogi points” now to help save the trees. The people of Baguio City will never forget.

Remember, this generation is the “empowered” generation. Information is free flowing and “Gift Certificates” can not be hidden forever.

To the residents of Baguio City… WAKE UP! Your trees are being killed in your own backyard!

Hay, i told you not to trust those big ol companies becoming more powerful. They can do anything they want with their money. This is a crime, hopefully they're replanting also. Or else they're just inconsiderate, ignorant a holes. These big companies have the power to shape our environment and consciousness. However companies ALWAYS act, they have to, in the favor of economics. Indeed, Pilipinas, wake up!

from an article in ABS CBN, SM has been ordered to freeze its tree cutting but they still went on.... they're gonna cut the trees daw to "plant green" daw.

There should be a nationwide boycott of SM

Corporate greed! They can afford to fund new establishment but they cant abolish their 6 month contract with their laborers which they require to look like clowns!(females)

Alam nyo kapag maglalakad ka sa SM Baguio, mararamdaman mo na umuuga

From Italy to Manila... via Cebu
April 08, 2012
http://www.bworldonline.com/content....-Cebu&id=49558

The first Liu Jo boutique opened at the Ayala Center Cebu in 2010. It will open the door of its second store at the Podium, Ortigas, this month and will open a full store in Glorietta, Makati City at the end of the year.

“We’re impressed with the booming country,” explained Liu Jo’s Managing Director Fernando Fornaciari, when asked what was behind the decision to tap the Philippine market.

It’s no longer unusual for an international brand to make its initial foray into the Philippines via Cebu rather than Manila as the Visayan city offers more readily available and attractive store spaces, and the opportunity for brands to test the water of the Philippine market.

“For us, Cebu is important because it acted as a testing ground for Liu Jo. It’s an international city with many tourists. We can tap the local and international market at the same time,” said Mr. Fornaciari.

He noted that foreigners in Manila are mostly expats who are in the country for business as opposed to those in Cebu who are mostly tourists. He added that there are a large number of Japanese, Chinese and Russian tourists who opt to travel to Cebu.

Good feedback from the Cebu branch prompted the Italian brand to move into the bigger city.

“Many big companies in Italy who want to grow come to the [Asian region,]” said Mr. Fornaciari. “It’s the tiger of the world market.”

As of first quarter this year, the brand has over 190 mono-brand points of sales and almost 4,500 multi-brand stores in 35 countries in three continents -- Europe, Africa and Asia.

SM-Baguio pine trees get 3-day reprieve

Published : Thursday, April 12, 2012 00:00
Written by : JAMES KONSTANTIN GALVEZ AND THOM PICAÑA

Quote:
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources on Wednesday directed officials of the DENR-Cordillera Administrative Region to comply with a court order stopping the planned tree cutting, earth-balling and uprooting of trees from the grounds of SM Baguio.

SM City Baguio management, on the other hand, issued a statement that said they respect the court order and added that they are mandated to plant 50,000 trees for SM-Baguio.

Regional Trial Court branch 5 Judge Cleto Villacorta 3rd issued a 72-hour Tepo against SM Tuesday afternoon as a handful of protesters held a rally in front of SM-Baguio.

“I already issued an order to our regional officials in Baguio City to comply with the order of Judge Villacorta. As we talk, our DENR-CAR must have already served its directive enjoining the management of SM Baguio to strictly comply with the terms and conditions of the TEPO,” DENR chief Ramon Paje said.

I agree.

Starmall sets P15-billion expansion

By Zinnia B. Dela Peña
(The Philippine Star)
Updated April 16, 2012 12:00 AM Comments (0)

MANILA, Philippines - The Starmall Group, the retail and services group of the family of Sen. Manuel Villar, is embarking on a P15 billion five-year expansion program aimed at establishing presence in Visayas and Mindanao and further extending its reach in Metro Manila.

Starmall, which opened its first outlet in 1979, is aiming to be a formidable player in the retail industry.

Kicking off the nationwide expansion is the opening on April 15 of the three-level Starmall San Jose Del Monte in the fast-growing “Northern Gateway of Manila.”

Starmall San Jose del Monte, the sixth in the Starmall Group’s growing chain of malls, has a total lot area of 52,522 square meters, which brings the combined area of the group’s malls to 400,000 square meters. It will be home to over 200 local brands as well as major fast food chains and casual dine-in restaurants set amid the backdrop of lush greens.

Shopping is made more convenient with a terminal bay for commuters coming from all around Bulacan to as far as Metro Manila and other point of origins and destinations, plus secured parking slots for private vehicle owners.

The group’s five other existing malls are Starmall Annex in Las Piñas City. Starmall EDSA Shaw, Starmall Alabang, Starmall Las Piñas and Worldwide Corporate Center.

The group likewise is aggressively expanding its chain of convenience stores with a planned capital outlay of P1 billion in the next 12 months. The move is in line with its bid to increase its total network to 100 and be among the top three players in the country.

DTI Launches Shopinas-powered Tindahang Pinoy

http://blog.shopinas.com/wp-content/...-1-300x300.jpg

April 19, 2012 By shopinas Leave a Comment

One of the reasons Shopinas.com was built is to aid Filipino SMEs build and grow their business online. We believe that they are the ones who will greatly benefit from the growing e-commerce industry since an online business requires minimal funding that will reach a worldwide market.

We are happy and proud that the Department of Trade and Industry saw our commitment in uplifting the Filipino SMEs. DTI partnered with us in creating its official online mall for proudly Pinoy products, the online arm of Ang Tindahang Pinoy (ATP).

After a successful opening in December last year, the national launching of the Ang Tindahang Pinoy will be held on 20 April 2012 at the Bridges Town Square in Mandaue City, Cebu. ATP Cebu outlet’s Shopinas-powered online store will be introduced at the same event as well.

The launching will be attended by DTI Secretary Gregory L. Domingo.Video presentations of ATPs in Cebu, Clark, and Davao will be shown during the launching to give buyers, exporters, traders, retailers, and travel associations, among others a glimpse of the product depots in these areas.

Ang Tindahang Pinoy showcases products under the One Town, One Product (OTOP) project of the DTI. The idea is to put up one ATP outlet per town in the Philippines that will make that town’s unique and exclusive products available for tourists and for everyone.

DTI targets to make at least 15 live online stores of the Ang Tindahang Pinoy outlets by 2013. But now, you may enjoy Cebu products and delicacies from the tip of your fingers on tindahangpinoycebu.shopinas.com. And very soon, your sought-after and favorite Pinoy products from all over the country will be just a click away!

Puregold seeks SEC approval of deal to buy S&R
By: Doris C. Dumlao
Philippine Daily Inquirer
4:39 pm | Monday, May 14th, 2012

Quote:

MANILA, Philippines—Puregold Price Club Inc. has finalized its P16.5 billion acquisition of 100 percent of the operator of S&R Membership Shopping through a share-swap with their common shareholder, the family of Chinese-Filipino Lucio Co.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange on Monday, Puregold said it had signed the agreement with the sellers of S&R operator Kareila Management Corp. on May 13.
Subject to the approval of the Securities and Exchange Commission, as stated in the deed of exchange, Puregold will acquire 1.7 million shares of Kareila representing 100 percent of its outstanding capital stock in exchange for about 766.4 million shares of Puregold with the Co family.

The deal, which is seen to enhance the company’s position as the second-largest player in the formal retail trade industry, had been approved by Puregold’s shareholders in a meeting earlier this month. The consolidation will give Puregold-S&R a combined market share of close to a fifth of the modern retail trade industry, ranking second-largest next to the SM group of retail tycoon Henry Sy.

Just be careful on what you are buying. There are a lot of counterfeit product that are said to be made in china and ship to the US or EUROPE and put a "MADE IN USA or EUROPE"
