The government should support SME Pinoy retailers also and encourage them to sell goods from local producers to complement each other. In this way, countryside development is possible.

ALI going into retail
By: Doris C. Dumlao
Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines—Property giant Ayala Land Inc. (ALI) plans to gain a foothold in the Philippine retailing business in partnership with the Tantoco family, owner and operator of upscale retailer Rustan’s group.

While ALI has been building shopping malls that are being leased out to retailers, the property giant now wants a direct stake in store operations by signing a joint venture with the Tantocos’ Specialty Investments Inc. (SII) to “pursue opportunities in the Philippine retail sector.”

“We will explore all aspects of retail, which may include being a landlord and/or operating a retail business,” ALI chief finance officer Jaime Ysmael said in a text message on Wednesday.

“The partnership with SII will enable ALI to support its mixed-use developments and, at the same time, grow its recurring income portfolio,” ALI deputy compliance officer Pamela Ann Perez told the Philippine Stock Exchange.

SII is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Tantocos’ Stores Specialists Inc. (SSI), one of the largest retail companies in the Philippines, with the exclusive rights to sell, distribute and market in the country a variety of foreign brands. Based on SSI’s website, it carries over 50 luxury brands and 250 boutique shops occupying over 250,000 square feet of prime retail space.

SSI brings into the country the brands that are being sold in the Rustan’s department stores and stand-alone shops. The Tantocos also operate the Debenhams and Starbucks franchises in the country.

After S&R deal, Puregold buys Parco Supermarkets

MANILA, Philippines - Listed retail firm Puregold Price Club, Inc. is on a roll.

After acquiring a stake in the operator of high-end S&R Membership Shopping for P16.5 billion, Puregold takes another step toward its goal of doubling its its stores in 3 years by aiming to close another deal with the owners of Parco Supermarkets within the month.

In a disclosure to the stock exchange on Monday, May 28, Puregold said it will use internally generated funds for its cash purchase of all the outstanding shares of the Ong family members -- Dolores, Patrick Richmond, katrina Cindy, Genevieve Mae, and Margaret Brigitte -- in Gant Group of Companies, the selling party in Parco Supermarkets.

With both acquisitions, Puregold's network will:

Have a total of 131 stores: 106 Puregold Stores, 19 Parco Supermarkets, and 6 S&R membership shopping clubs
wider geographical footprint: 71 stores in Metro Manila, 22 stores in north of Metro Manila, 37 stores in south of Metro Manila and 1 store in the Visayas

Puregold officials earlier said they plan to double the number of stores by 2015 as it saturates further into the untapped Metro Manila and the Luzon areas and expands into the Visayas and Mindanao. It targets to open 25 stores this 2012 and 2013.

In the first quarter of 2012, the company posted a 24.5% jump in net income to P469 million from P376 million in the same period in 2011. Total net sales increased by 30.3% to P10.74 billion. - Rappler.com

Puregold of Erap "crony" Lucio Co is in the roll. After transforming Puregold from a mere PX Duty free retail outlet into a supermarket chain catering to the CDE market and buying grocery stores like Sioland, its in the frenzy of buying more competitors like Cherry Foodarama, S&R and now Parco.

Again, Puregold seems to be using the Jollibee model. Putting supermarkets catering to the low to middle to upper middle class market.

The good thing is Puregold from just selling almost expired imported goods, smuggled imported goods and crappy Chinese dangerous products, they are now selling mostly made in the Philippines products. Some agri products like vegetables, meat, chicken are even sourced from host communities. No wonder, with this "symbiotic type" of relationship between retailer (Puregold) and producers (host communities), Puregold is getting more customers unlike SM and Robinsons which seems to sell mostly imported products.

THose "sosyal, upscale, membership wholes sale" supermarket and malls selling mostly imported goods I think have a very small market in the country.

Makro of Netherlands and S&R are almost history. With Makro stores being converted into SM Hypermarts and S&R bought by Puregold.

Rustan's, another "sosyal" supermarket, is poised to go into the mass market also.

SM Group as already done so with their Savemore concept store.

Hindi lang pala radio stations ang nagiging "bakya" ano?

But again, the rule of demand and supply reigns supreme here.

Errr.... upscale supermarkets are actually on the rise. The S&R formerly known as price smart has EVER group of companies as local partner but we all know that ever is now bankrupt. Then several key american officials of S&R were indicted of fraud. Puregold seeing the potential of S&R bough shares of the company for almost 4 yeras now, it was only recently when they officially bought the entire lot. S&R just recently open their newest branch in cebu, with plans on opening a shop in davao. Another branch will be opening soon in mandaluyong after puregold bought the lot from which cherry foodarama used to stand. So S&R wont be expanding if there is no market for it. And have you tried to go shoping at S&R during their sales? I have, i have experienced falling in line at the payout counter for over 2.5 hours, its that looonnnngggggg. And people cant enter the store anytime they want because it is already so full inside. Thats why im sure the market for high end products is huge in the urban areas. If not then how else can LV, gucci, hermes et al survive all these years considering how expensive their prices are compare to other countries.

Makro went belly up due to poor management. It was co-owned before by ayala and the sm group. Place is a mess, products being sold are mostly expired. Ive experienced many times before buying sackful of chips only to find out there are cockroaches inside the bags. The made me suspect that they bought the trash of the local manufacturers.

SM supermarket will be mostly affected with the rise of puregold and other discount supermarkets. Even though sm, savemore supermarkets are marketed as pang masa, their prices are not. If you compare their prices with say robinsons, sm prices are marked 5 to 10% sometimes more. Like i bought a can of pork stew in chinatown for only 99 pesos but at sm it cost 130. And many people know this already, thats why lines at sm supermarkets are not as long as in other supermarket chains. SM supermarket also doesnt carry much product variety due to their bad company policies towards their suppliers. One example is colgate. I dont know if sm carries them now but there was a time when colgate pulled out due to unfair policies being implemented by sm.

Nung nasa Pinas ako, I never shopped at SM grocery. The prices are ridiculous compared to locally owned grocery stores and the wet market.

I prefer the locally owned grocery stores because I found service at SM very bad (aside from nakakatawa pa hitsura ng mga cashiers at baggers nila sa make up..parang clown o bakla ) Hindi na nga mahaba yung pila, ang bagal pa rin ng usad ng linya. And their customer service policy is ridiculous. Kapag magbabalik ka ng defective product at ayaw mo na, they will NOT refund you and if you want to replace the product, dapat sa "same department" (line kung relos ang binili mo dapat doon ka din kukuha ng replacement, hindi puede sa iba ang you can't refund your money) Dito sa US, ang dali dali magsauli at magpalit

I think one main problem with SM is that they do not localize aside from their price. Parang wala silang K na alamin ang cultura at shopping preferences ng mga locals. Hindi lahat ng lugar sa Pilipinas "Manila-style" shopping

Poor management or people were just fed up with high prices and poor products which are mostly coming from China?

You are bashing local manufacturers again. For your info, most of the products sold in Makro are crappy made in China. Very few Pinoy made. Expected, its partly owned by Ayala and SM, two companies which do not care about local manufacturers.

Agree.

Aside from pricey goods, SM again is focus on selling overpriced fu@k up China products. SM is a glamorized 168 Mall-the notorious haven of pirated, smuggled crappy products from China.

Add to that the very bad return and exchange policy. Buti sana kung magaganda products nilang dala, mga pipitsugin naman.
