Am thrilled to have stumbled upon this marvellous thread! I love looking back at these types of old photos, and also enjoyed Desert's choice of music: Dead Can Dance (which I saw live once or twice back in the day).
One of the great American novelists (may have been F Scott Fitzgerald) commented once about the chasm of difference between life and social attitudes in Manhattan and Brooklyn. I can't remember the exact quote, but it was to the effect of: "The greatest distance in the world is across the Brooklyn Bridge".

And no doubt the Cocteau Twins, too!

I found the exact quote I was thinking of.... Norman Podhoretz (editor of Commentary Magazine) wrote “One of the longest journeys in the world is the journey from Brooklyn to Manhattan".

From http://www.brooklynpix.com

Emmons and Ocean Ave in 1914. It looks better than now!

Sheepsheadbay, 1935

Ocean Ave with Emmons upfront, 1951. Looks exactly the same today. Well, except the tram (streetcar)

Sheepsheadbay, 1938. Looks so weird. The Kingsborough isn't there, Manhattan beach doesn't have trees

25th looking towards 86st, 1949. The streetcars were everywhere! Other than that, I think this place looks exactly the same.

New Utrecht Avenue looking north near 80th Street, 1900. Looks like Wild West

They were pretty cool weren't they? At one time you could just about buy anything from 4AD and expect some good sounding stuff. And if you like, Robin Guthrie is still putting out great albums!

Brooklyn, Bath & West End Railroad at Bath and 21st Avenues, 1892

Brighton Beach, 1944

1892. You know what it is

Kings Highway looking east from East 16th Street, 1929. It's amazing how all the women look distinctly 1920's.

Kings Highway looking east at East 16th Street, 1942. View from Brighton Line structure. Middle of World War II and it doesn't show.

WW2 was very good to Brooklyn. The yards were going full steam, there was full employment, and few places to spend it outside the neighborhood as gas was rationed and time away from work was precious. In 1942, Brooklyn was a fistful of dollars!

The amount of cars makes one think that people somehow got around gas rations! Now that I observe the picture more closely, I conclude that most people are women and kids, most men would be overseas or in training.

That aerial photo of downtown brooklyn shows how much of it has been destroyed. Walking around borough hall I had a feeling there had to have been some big demolitions where Columbus park and the other adjacent lawns are today. If you look at the corner of Montague and Cadman Plaza W, you'll notice there used to be a taller, more significant building. Today it's a four story building, which I think is still nice (has a 50's touch to it) but the previous building was obviously superior.

Then you have the two blocks, in between Johnson st (across from the historic us post office) and Joralemon st, completely razed for Columbus Park. Also notice the cleared out areas where Adam st was being widened. And then theres everything in between brooklyn bridge blvd, tillary and jay street. What appeared to be an interesting part of downtown brooklyn is now a boring set of brown, dull towers with parking lots.

That's not the end of it! You also have the Fox theatre and practically every other handsome building on the same block, all razed for the con edison building.

This and everything to the left...

replaced by this piece of shit.

Talk about down grade.
