Besides... I do think he has a point about this tram as I have stated earlier. But like I also said, we shall see whether or not it is a success!
We certainly will see as construction is moving along very rapidly. The whole area will be a success as it is progress.

Just because one sees construction doesn't mean that it is a positive. I'm sure that in the former DDR they thought that construction of places like Marzahn was a great idea with big communal living areas.

A single track tram line is not what I would personally call progress.

Construction for the many being employed by this project in uncertain economic times is positive.

This is a boutique tourist attraction, it was never intended to be nor probably ever will be a substantial tramway, if it does become extended and linked over to Britomart then that is a bonus. If it is never extended and used only by children and tourists alone, such as the success of the tiny single track Motat line it will be a success. As far as I any many other Aucklanders are concerned this development is progress. Would we be better with or without it? I would say something is better than nothing at all. It is a small part of a larger development for Auckland and that is progress too.

Yah, part of what I said was more of a wish list, but I do think it'll come true in time.
While rapayer money is being spent, it is towards a development that could nett $billions for the city. Any good developer would take a long term approach and spend money on amenities up front.

I'm a proud Aucklander, Auckland will always be my home, Norway is just where I happen to live and cream the big bucks, I just don't see the point in this tram, anyone who thinks it's going to lead to something more is just kidding themselves. As a tourist I wouldn't see the point as it goes from nowhere to nowhere, there is not much of interest apart from a few new buildings. This isn't even comparable to the Christchurch tram.

If the heritage tram ran around the waterfront from the CBD to Mission Bay, or did a loop around the city then I'd happily support it.

Oh come on. It will definitely be extended to some degree - most likely to Britomart (and perhaps on the St Heliers) while there's already been work done on a potential route to link with the MOTAT tram (which takes 180,000 people a year).

Even when extended, no one is suggesting this will be a mass-public transport solution to cure Auckland traffic ills. Its one small aspect of the growing PT footprint in the city that should also (eventually) be a tourist attraction. That's all. Get over it.

Even when extended if it's not going to form the basis of a tram network (like most here think it will be) then what is the point in building it in the first place, why are people getting hardon's over it?

It's a pointless folly, a sop to the pro tram crowd.

If they spent 4 million less on ethnic sub councils and 4 million more a year on a tram network
We would all be happy and in agreement

Sadly we cant comment here on that comparison

Look from my view point. I cant disagree with the like's of kiwi Rob from a strategic long term angle

However - im real keen to see the end result of this first step. I think its going to be better than we all imagine ( at least thats my hope).

I've never heard anyone mention a tram network - except you.

Its more than likely that it will eventually be light-rail (a unit will be used during RWC) and involve line running (from Britomart) east to the Wynyard Quarter and then south-east to the MOTAT tram through alot of the city's tourist attractions. And perhaps eventually a line will run north-south on Dominion Rd. Hardly pointless, especially that last one.

Why you get your knickers in a twist over PT - while the city is littered with concrete follys to the pro-road corwd - is really beyond me.

This is how I see it:

Heritage tram = fun, touristy, seaside line, maybe between the zoo and mission bay

Proper commuter rail CBD loop/harbour tunnel = totally different, not related in any way

The tram shed is going to look great when completed, based on the sweet concept drawings floating around.

I saw it in a presentation, so no actual files to provide sorry...but the tram shed will be getting an awesome giant graphic artwork. Should be finished in 2-3 weeks.

I love trams

but i'm a little worried that the loop is soo tiny.. I was hoping they could link the loop to the rest of the CBD, connecting to britiomart and the ferry terminal would be super ideal..

man, i would love it if they do that..
