Southampton, London, New york and QM2

My recent holiday on the Queen Mary 2. As i live in the UK i thought i would watch the ship leave Southampton, go to New York for 3 nights and watch it arrive, then board it to come back (dont worry there will only be a few pics of QM2).

Southampton

I was lucky as the day the QM2 left 3 other large cruise ships left

Southampton Maratime museum, not that big but has a few nice models and a section on the Titanic which departed from Southampton

Southampton is a weird mix of medieval ruins, grand georgian and edwardian buildings and then what are obviously redeveloped bomb sites from WWII

Southamptons WII memorial is this bombed church

image hosted on flickr

The Bargate, the old entrance to Southampton now in the center of the citys main shopping street

image hosted on flickr

The great thing about Southampton is the large collection of parks right next to the city center. In the parks there are quite a few memorials this one is to the Titanic enginers

image hosted on flickr

The civic center is quite large and grand adn contains the cities museum

image hosted on flickr

It seemed to be quite a popular thing to watch all the ships leaving, 4 in total as well as the ferries and other smaller boats

See you in 6 days!

Southamptons origional city walls, this is the old dock area

image hosted on flickr

Here is the grand hotel where first class passengers like those of the Titanic stayed before boarding the ship throught the gate just to the right of the brown building, which was the White star lines office

edit

The train station from London, now not in use for that function

Very interesting! I think it´s the first time ever I've seen pics of Southampton.

Btw, is the dock Titanic departed from still in use for passenger liners?

I'm enjoying this. Southampton looks quite nice... I always love a busy port and medieval and edwardian buildings.

Mr bricks, the dock the Titanic left from is still in use. It was on the other side of the dock that the new ocean terminus was built and where the QM2 docked when i came back.

Southampton isnt what i would call a beautiful city Ajphx, but it is an extreemly interesting one with many historic buildings and is definately improoving itself. Its definately got more to it than your average port in the world.

On to London

image hosted on flickr

My first time to the Tower of london, have been around it many times but never been in (you know what its ike when you live somewhere!). Was definately worth the money as there is so much to see, let alone it such an interesting and historic place. My attempt at a panorama

White tower, the whole place was wonderfully preserved

Southampton is a decent place, i would compare it to the many bombed cities you find across Europe except with alot more medieval structures.

I have added a couple of pics to the second post as well

I had the best curry I've ever had in my life in an Indian restaurant in Southampton. I also shagged a very fine looking bird from there.

I apreciate the pedestrianisation around Times square to give more space to the public, but i think maybe they have gone too far, especially with this area as it was always IMO about the buzz of the traffic, lights, people, noise. Taking away one has dampened this, at least in the day anyway. Hopefully a happy medium will be reached.
