Ugly City Halls: Does Toronto's Top the List?

Hey, I'm from the Toronto area and I can't help notice how ugly the current Toronto city hall is (bellow) and cannot understand 1) why it was built in the first place? 2) why the city doesn't go back to its old city hall (second picture bellow, which initially was supposed to be demolished, why? I have no idea). Just wondering if any other cities have decided to cast away beautiful classic buildings in favour of hideous post modern - in Toronto's case alien space ship lookalike - buildings. As well as what others opinions are on this practice of replacing classics with bunkers... Penn Station cough cough.

Really? I think ours is one of the best. It's not like Old City Hall isn't being used, it's a courthouse today.

These are pretty bad:

Boston

Ottawa

Oslo

It's still used as a city hall?

Good heavens, I wouldn't call it ugly at all. Designed by renown Finnish architect Viljo Revell (the winner of an International Architectural contest) it was built in 1961. Its striking and futuristic modernity were far before its time, and have served the city of Toronto well. I don't think I am familiar with the city hall in Burlington, where you come from.

Toronto City Hall: Resident Evil, Apocalypse

http://www.blogto.com/archives/movie-sightings-2.jpg

I like both the old and new city halls in Toronto quite a bit. Sure there are some issues regarding the courtyard and that view from the backside, but overall New City Hall has been a great addition to the city. It's unique and instantly recognizable.

Who could ever forget Resident Evil, Apocalypse? Toronto City Hall featured at the 46 second mark, the money shots from 1:56 onwards!

Having seen Torontos city hall in person its very much of its time. The hall itself (ie the towers) isnt too bad, but its the awful concrete square that lets it hugely down! There is a horrible concrete ramp going around it spereating it from the streetscape and the art looks very cheap as well, being made of concrete.

Oslo City Hall is amazing, its possibly my favourite piece of modernism there is, as it's one of the very few examples of ornate modernism. I love how medieval it looks still (note the criss-cross brickwork in the towers)

From far it looks like slab - but from closer just look at the brickwork. This is a handmade building:

Toronto's isnt bad, its just one of those generic 'modern' type building.

I prefer old classic style buildings like Philadelphia City Hall.

Yeah, Nathan Phillips Square is in need of a major renovation. Thankfully, they've just started it. A green roof was added recently to the building. This is it so far:
