New Renderings For Tower Verre Revealed

The most recent redesign of Towe Verre, Jean Nouvel's MoMA tower, calls for a shorter building than originally planned, at 1,050 feet and 78 stories. The architectural drawings for the redesigned tower came to light in August; now, New York YIMBY spots some fresh renderings on the website of architects Adamson Associates. The archibabble explains: "The design features a faceted exterior that tapers to a set of three distinct asymmetrical crystalline peaks at the apex of the tower – each peak varying in height and shape." Inside, there will be 100 hotel rooms, 480,000 square feet of residential space, and 52,000 square feet of MoMA expansion.

Zeckendorf Unveils 50 UN Plaza Plans

Yesterday Arthur and William Lie Zeckendorf, along with Global Partners, unveiled their next project, 50 United Nations Plaza, and also made a pledge of $100,000 to Friends of Dag Hammarskjold Plaza (a nonprofit that preserves the plaza where their building is situated).

The new development will offer East River, Chrysler Building and UN Secretariat Building views from deep bay windows. (The Zeckendorfs’ grandfather, Trygve Lie, was the first UN Secretary-General, so we imagine the area holds special meaning for them.)

And rather than limestone or brick, this time the architect is going to use polished stainless-steel detailing on the facade, in the spirit of the great NYC skyscraper.

U.N. RAL: This 44-story, 87-unit condo building at 50 UN Plaza should be finished by 2014. It will have a 10,000-square-foot penthouse with its own infinity lap pool.Plantings are planned all around the tower, which will also feature a spa and a pool.

408 Foot 1 WTC Spire Arrives In NYC

The goods for One World Trade Center’s coronation — so to speak — today made their way to the city, the AP reported. A barge departed from Port Newark in New Jersey today towing along nine pieces of the steel spire, which will top the 1,776-foot-high property.

Each piece weighs 70 tons. Workers at the site were busy today pouring the concrete that will hold the 408-foot spire.
As previously reported, the steel shipments were the subject of a lawsuit, which was resolved two months ago. The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey alleged that ADF Steel Corp., the Canadian steel supplier that provided the material for the antenna, kept the shipment “hostage” over a $6 million dispute for steel needed for the Lower Manhattan transportation hub.

By this spring, the spire is slated to top building.

Dutch Kills becomes hotel development hotbed, over residents’ objections

Despite efforts from many residents to restrain commercial development in their neighborhood, the Dutch Kills section of Long Island City has become a hotbed of hotel development, the Wall Street Journal reported.

In Dutch Kills, the 10 hotels the small area boasts will soon be augmented by three more currently under construction, and two more are still in the planning stages, the Journal said.
“My child isn’t going to be able to talk to someone when she’s walking down the street like I did when I was that age, because it’s a more transient neighborhood now,” Richard Madrid, a lifelong resident of the area, told the Journal.

But because hotel inventory is considered tight citywide, developers continue to push for more development, the paper said. Rooms in the Dutch Kills area are generally between $150 and $250 a night, said Raj Bhagia, a developer later this month will break ground on a 10-story, 74-room hotel on 41st Avenue.
