Australia, and indeed the whole of the southern hemisphere lacks a "mega-city" like a Tokyo or New York, or God forbid - a Mexico City. Increased population does not mean wages dropping down the Third World levels, as you are suggesting, tongue in cheek. The internet is over-represented with those with green intentions, such as no more population, no mines, no coal-powered electricity etc. The problem is that they offer no alternative to what they are proposing, other than the decimation of jobs and export earnings. |

Sao Paulo has 20 million habitants, very similar figures to New York City and Mexico City. The southern hemisphere already has its megacity, which is Sao Paulo. |

I really don't have ANY intention whatsoever to start any kind of discussion, but I'm really sorry that people think bad of São Paulo or Mexico City or Jakarta, for what matters. Just because a city has a share of its population living in poverty it does not mean it is a poor city.
I live in São Paulo now and I've already lived in Europe (Lisbon) for some years, and I can say there is a LOT of wealth here. I mean, there is a mall with Louis Vuitton, Channel and Hermès as the flagship stores! Stupidities aside, there are many topics in the Brazilian Forums which have pictures of our city; I recommend this one: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=852656 Cheers!

Sao Paulo has beautiful green neighbourhoods, with large homes and lush vegetation, like the Jardins area:

let's look at hybrid cars, do you see people rushing out to buy them? if you convert a nation's passenger fleet to hybrid... there is a significant impact, but do you know what tha leading reason as to why people don't want it? it doesn't have any grunt. oh my. yes sao paolo is very nice indeed. isn't it lovely to see that joint looking after its small minorities... something else australia can aspire to...

I don't understand why you guys are attacking Sao Paulo. If you people don't like Maria Theresa, thats one thing, but channelizing into the city of Sao Paulo your anger for MT doesn't really change the facts... Sao Paulo is already a very rich city, and is ever ascending. I don't think you guys would like it if foreigners depreciated Australian cities. Despite in agreeing that SP does have some not very delightful views, I would love to visit it someday.

i have visited brasillia, it is like brazil's canberra - a city that was created in the middle of nowhere and lacks soul. it has some nice buildings.. but that's about it. maybe it's a great place to live?? but fsck it is a terrible place to visit.
i have visited sao paulo.. it is a congested, dangerous, bland, imposing city. that said, it has great culture, cool people and an excellent nightlife. so long as you don't get stabbed or die of air pollution. these cities might have lots of money in aggregate... but the general standard of living in brazil is very poor. to claim them as the 'richest cities in the southern hemisphere' is to take a consolation prize they don't deserve. |
