Can our government afford bio-remediation?...after removing the solid wastes in the river, i guess bio-remediation is probably the easiest and the most effective way of removing the bad smell that comes from the river and at the same time the oil spill at the surface of the river...Sa pagkaka-alam ko kase, some of the pseudomonas species have the unique ability to degrade oil...

No we don't need another Ondoy...and we also don't need a bunch of pessimist like you who try to criticize or should i say, put down the efforts our country is making to rehabilitate Pasig River......

Take it easy.. I think he's just trying to stress his point that cleaning our waterways is a herculean task and might need some natural intervention.

Yup! that is what i'm trying to voice out. He took it seriously.

San Juan river is good as dead. Among all the rivers here in the metropolitan, it's sad to say it has the worst condition of them all. The river texture is like an oil slick as if there is a daily oil spill in that area. Reviving the river really requires natural intervention (cost efficient and instant).

Even though this award is for another river in the Metro Manila, it definitely shows that we have the tools and techniques to rehabilitate the Pasig River.
Sana, one day, the Pasig River will return to its former glory, and it will be a river we can proud of once again.

For 2011, the UN awarded the Philippines the "Best Water Management Practices" title for the Las Pinas-Zapote River System Rehabilitation Programme. This project was chosen out of 39 submissions from countries all over the world. Great job to everyone's continual hard work and advocacy on "greening the Philippines".

In Brief: A cleaner, greener river runs through the Philippines
Photo: David Swanson/IRIN
Manila slums are growing fast and access to clean water is a problem
MANILA, 22 March 2011 (IRIN) - The Philippines’ capital Manila has seen one of the developing world’s highest rates of urban growth, straining water and sanitation resources, but one river community has managed to clean and green its local river, earning it a UN best practice award.

Since 2002, local government officials in southern metro Manila, have been rehabilitating the Las Pinas-Zapote river system by training “river watch” volunteers in ecological solid waste and river management. Under a re-greening process known locally as `bambusetum’, residents have planted bamboo and mangroves to prevent soil erosion, installed rubbish traps and carry out daily rubbish collection along a 56km stretch of the river.

The municipal project is backed by former presidential candidate Senator Manuel Villar, whose family is from the area and whose wife represents the district in parliament.

"Communities play an important role in monitoring, protecting and cleaning the rivers when they have enough information, knowledge and are given rights to participate. Their participation is very valuable," said Nguy Thi Khanh, deputy director of Vietnamese NGO Centre for Water Resources Conservation and Development.

This year's World Water Day, observed annually on 22 March, is focused on cities and the challenge of keeping up with population growth and industrialization.

For a quick fix, the likes of Ondoy is something to look forward to. For a long-term solution, the committed seriousness of the government, concerned sectors and the citizens are something to look forward to.

We can fix this without KILLING PEOPLE. My god, I can't believe the people here wishing for another Ondoy?

Kidding aside, cleaning the River as derf said is a heculean task. Getting too dismissive, defensive and outright pissimistic to the point of asking for a calamity, doesn't solve the problem at all. However, it is better to know than not knowing at all what other people think about the existence of a problem and how it is being addressed. But then again taking it too seriously sometimes would not help either in making a positive solution to deal with the issue. So.... take it easy guyz, and just rise above it.

BTW..."HAPPY EASTER TO ALL"

To some degree, I do agree that cleaning the river is next to impossible. As much as we wan't to make this process easy, that's not going to happen. As long as we have politicians who are unwilling to clean the river, we're not going to go anywhere.

I'm not sure though, do we have statistics of how many squatters have been relocated? What madame Gina Lopez is doing is a glimmer of hope, I hope our politicians are like that.

every summer talaga umiitim ang ilog pasig, but what's good is that everyday that i pass that area (Bambang, Pasig), you'll see lots of birds flying around that area (they wouldn't be there for no reason, like food)

Cleaning any river in the manila is next to impossible. All the money and technology in the world cant clean the rivers unless change happen to the people themselves. We can start by not throwing our garbage anywhere we wish. Even small pieces of paper or candy wrappers should be kept in our pockets and throw them at designated trash bins, huwag maging tamad at maarte. Make it fashionable to throw garbage in trash bins only. Grabe collectors on the other hand should be efficient and prompt in emptying those bins. People has to be re-educated on basic manners, the value of protecting the enviroment. Unless people change, we're just throwing good money away.

If people still dont change then maybe only a tsunami or some act of God can clean our environment for us.
