March 2013

http://www.iconeye.com/news/architec...ering-ambition

Quote:
The title of the world’s highest has moved to the eastern hemisphere, where it appears it will remain for some time. The US could once finance high-rise marvels that were symbols of its economic and political ambition and success; as both demonstrations of power and the solution to the densification of urban centres. But could the gargantuan architectural gestures of the east make an re-appearance in the post 9/11 west? Smith is unsure, but sees an opportunity in two cities: “London and New York, because they are such international cities, could build towers of this size. There are deep pockets that want to be in those locations if you have the right site,” he says. “In New York, there is a re-emergence of super-tall towers, but they have a very small footplate. There is one we are working on that is 1,200ft (366m). They aren’t as tall as the ones we are making in Asia at the moment, but people are seeing the value in higher density point structures.”
Seems strange somehow that Smith is referring to the 1200ft figure. But as we all know, the tower is till in process (height- and designwise), so I wouldn't take it too seriously.

It's a dated article. Once we finally find out the specs on this building, you'll be sure to see bananas and night clubs everywhere.

The article was from March which is after December when we found out the 1550 figure.

It probably got shortened, 1550 or more to the top floor seems kinda unrealistic for NYC

I highly doubt it as that is the only article to mention 1200 ft. What makes more sence ten articles saying 1550 ft or one article with 1200 ft?

1550 feet is the figure we have until we know more.

I do agree with that, I just fear that once we find out more, the building's hieght will have dropped.

Yea but theres been articles about him trying to get more air rights too and others for height reductions. I doubt he would flaunt 1550 ft for it to end up not even taller then 432.

Developers do love to flaunt (esp. in Dubai), but I do agree about air rights. Why try so hard to earn more and then not even use them?

It's also possible that AS+GG have been chosen as the design architect for 111 w. 57th -- which, as we know, is 1,200 ft. SHOP is the architect of record on that project, but it was always possible (maybe even likely, given the description of that tower as "old school New York" doesn't really jive with SHOP's aesthetic) that someone else was doing the design. Maybe somebody with a better understanding of the timeline on that project can weigh in?

I really do wonder ... I mean is it really coincidence that 111W is 1,200ft? The timeline is odd though ... (March 2013 [article] vs August 2013 [DOB permit filing on 111W]).

But as I said, I wouldn't worry too much. If anything, this tower will end up being taller than 1,550ft.
